How multiple sites share one VPS
Every domain resolves to the VPS, while the web server decides which site should answer each request. Create an A record for IPv4 and, where applicable, an AAAA record for IPv6 for each hostname. When a browser connects, it sends the requested hostname in the HTTP Host header. Nginx matches that name to a server block; Apache matches it to a virtual host. The selected configuration then serves files locally or forwards the request to an application listening on a private port.

This routing happens before WordPress or another application processes the request. Consequently, one hostname can point to a WordPress directory while another hostname on the same IP points to a Node.js service. You do not need one IP address or one VPS per domain.

What WordPress requires
WordPress runs from its own directory and needs PHP plus a MySQL-compatible database. WordPress identifies Apache and Nginx as the most robust and featureful server choices, although any server that supports the required PHP and database versions can run it.

Use a separate document root
Keep each installation in a dedicated path such as /srv/www/blog.example.com. Do not put two unrelated sites in one public directory: shared paths make accidental file exposure, ownership mistakes, and confusing deployments more likely.
Handle rewrites explicitly with Nginx
Apache can use per-directory .htaccess rules, but Nginx does not generate or apply those files automatically. A WordPress Nginx configuration therefore needs an explicit front-controller rule so a request for a page that is not a physical file is sent to index.php. It must also define how PHP scripts are passed to PHP-FPM. If either rule is missing, home pages may work while posts, feeds, or the administration area return 404 errors or download PHP source.
Use supported software
Keep WordPress core, themes, plugins, PHP, and the database server on supported releases. WordPress warns that PHP versions beyond their official end of life can expose a site to security vulnerabilities. Treat updates as part of the VPS operating routine rather than an occasional emergency.
What a non-WordPress site can run
Static files
A static site needs no application runtime. Give it a distinct document root and configure the matching server block or virtual host to serve that directory. This is the simplest workload to colocate because it consumes little CPU when files are cached and has no database service to maintain.

Node.js, Python, Go, and other applications
Run the application as its own service on a loopback address or private interface, then proxy the public hostname through Nginx or Apache. The proxy forwards the original host and client information and can terminate HTTPS while the application remains off the public network. Each app should have its own process user, deployment directory, environment configuration, and logs.
The application port is an internal implementation detail. Visitors use the normal HTTPS port for the domain; the edge server selects the correct upstream based on the hostname. This prevents users from having to remember ports and lets several runtimes coexist behind one public listener.

Plan the VPS before pointing DNS
- Inventory every workload. Record each domain, expected traffic, framework, runtime version, database, scheduled jobs, upload requirements, and deployment method. Include background workers and queues, not just page requests.
- Choose names and paths. Assign one document or deployment root per site. A consistent layout makes permissions, backups, and incident response easier.
- Create ownership boundaries. Use a distinct Unix user and group for each site where practical. Give the web process only the read, write, and execute permissions it actually needs. Never reuse one application’s private credentials in another site.
- Separate data services. Use a separate database and database account for each WordPress installation or application. Keep database listeners on localhost or a private interface unless a documented public connection is required.
- Estimate combined demand. Add the CPU, memory, storage I/O, database connections, and network use of all sites. A VPS that is comfortable for one low-traffic blog may struggle when an application adds builds, workers, image processing, or large imports.
Step-by-step configuration pattern
1. Build the WordPress server block or virtual host
Point the WordPress hostname at its document root, set the index file, define the front-controller rewrite, and pass PHP scripts to the intended PHP-FPM pool. A simplified Nginx pattern looks like this:

}The PHP-FPM socket name varies by distribution and installed PHP version, so use the pool endpoint that exists on your VPS. A separate pool is useful when several PHP applications need different limits, users, or runtime versions.

2. Add the non-WordPress virtual host
For a Node.js, Python, Go, or similar service, define the second hostname and proxy it to the application’s local listener:

}Use the port and health model required by the application. Keep the service supervised so it restarts after a failure or reboot, and ensure the application knows it is behind a proxy when it generates absolute URLs or enforces secure cookies.

Create the A and, if used, AAAA records for every hostname and point them to the VPS address. Wait for the records to resolve, then test each hostname separately. A DNS record only gets traffic to the machine; the matching server block or virtual host still determines which site responds.
4. Enable HTTPS per hostname
Issue a certificate covering each domain, configure the certificate and private key in that site’s edge configuration, and redirect HTTP to HTTPS. Keep certificate renewal in the maintenance calendar. A certificate for one hostname does not automatically cover unrelated domains unless they were explicitly included.

5. Verify from outside the VPS
Open every hostname, test a WordPress permalink, sign in to the WordPress administration area, submit an application request, and check static assets. Confirm that an unknown hostname does not expose a site’s document root. Review access and error logs while testing so a routing error is distinguished from an application error.

Isolation that prevents one site from damaging another
Colocation is not isolation by itself. Put each site’s source, uploads, configuration, logs, database credentials, and backup set in separate locations. Unique Unix users reduce the chance that a compromised plugin can read another application’s files. Separate PHP-FPM pools can enforce different users and resource limits when more than one PHP application is present.
Containers are optional. They are useful when applications require conflicting runtime versions, repeatable deployments, or independent rollback. They do not create a new physical machine: containers still share the VPS CPU, memory, storage, network, and kernel. Maintain host-level patching, monitoring, and backups even when every application runs in a container.

There is no reliable universal number of sites a VPS can host. Capacity depends on traffic, page complexity, plugins, cache hit rate, background jobs, database queries, application runtime, and the size of uploads or builds.
- CPU: Watch sustained utilization and load during traffic spikes, plugin updates, builds, and scheduled tasks.
- Memory: Check for swap activity and out-of-memory kills. PHP workers, application processes, databases, and build tools all compete for RAM.
- Storage: Monitor free space and I/O latency. Logs, backups, media, package caches, and container layers can fill a disk unexpectedly.
- Database connections: Set connection limits that leave headroom for every application rather than allowing one site to exhaust the server.
- Network: Include outbound media, backups, updates, and API traffic when estimating bandwidth.
Set alerts before the VPS becomes full or unresponsive. A site that is fast in isolation can become slow when another workload consumes the same disk or memory pool.

When one VPS is the right choice
Use a shared VPS when traffic is modest, one operator can maintain the entire stack, and simplicity or cost matters. Centralized patching, monitoring, and backups are efficient when the sites have similar operational expectations.
Choose separate VPSs when workloads scale very differently, one site needs strict fault or security boundaries, separate teams own the systems, or maintenance windows cannot overlap. A noisy database job, runaway worker, or kernel-level problem on one machine can affect every colocated site.
Choose containers on one VPS when you need repeatable releases and runtime separation but do not yet need another virtual machine. Make that choice for deployment and compatibility benefits, not as a substitute for capacity planning.
WordPress Multisite is optional
WordPress Multisite can map multiple domains or subdomains to one WordPress directory, with the appropriate DNS and server mappings. It is useful when several sites share one WordPress installation and administration model. It is not required for hosting an independent Node.js, Python, Go, static, or other non-WordPress application on the same VPS. Independent sites should remain independent when they need different update schedules, users, plugins, databases, or deployment processes.
Common failures and how to correct them

Maintenance checklist
- Patch the operating system, web server, runtimes, WordPress core, themes, plugins, and databases on a defined schedule.
- Renew HTTPS certificates before expiration and test the renewal process.
- Back up each site, database, and application configuration separately.
- Perform test restores; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
- Review logs and resource alerts for every hostname, not just the busiest site.
- Restrict database services to localhost or private interfaces unless public access is essential.
- Document the DNS records, server blocks, virtual hosts, PHP-FPM pools, upstream ports, and deployment users so another operator can recover the VPS.
Bottom line
One VPS is fully capable of hosting WordPress and non-WordPress sites together. DNS directs each domain to the machine, while Nginx server blocks or Apache virtual hosts select the correct directory, PHP-FPM pool, or application upstream. Separate users, files, databases, credentials, logs, and backups limit cross-site impact; monitoring reveals when the shared CPU, memory, storage, database, or network pool is becoming the constraint. Move a site to another VPS when independent scaling, stronger fault isolation, or separate team ownership is worth the added operational cost.
