A Discord bot and a website can share one VPS reliably when they run as separate processes or containers. Put a reverse proxy such as Nginx, Caddy or Traefik on the public HTTP ports (80 and 443), keep the website on a private local port, and supervise the bot independently with systemd or a container manager. The two services normally do not compete for ports because a Discord bot maintains an outbound connection to Discord rather than listening on your website’s public port.

How the shared-VPS arrangement works
A VPS is a virtual Linux or Windows server with its own CPU allocation, memory, storage and network interface. You can install several applications on it just as you would on a physical server. The key is assigning each application a distinct process, port and failure boundary.

Only the reverse proxy normally needs to accept Internet traffic. Binding the website to 127.0.0.1 or a private container network prevents visitors from bypassing HTTPS, authentication and rate limits at the proxy.
Will the bot and website conflict on ports?
Not if they use separate listeners. A port can be owned by only one listening process on a given IP address, so configure the web application for one local port and avoid having another service claim it. The bot generally needs no public listener at all; it opens outbound connections, making it independent of ports 80 and 443.

For example, Nginx can listen publicly on 80 and 443, while a Node, Python or other web application listens on 127.0.0.1:3000. The bot runs as a separate process with its own environment and does not bind that port. If the bot includes a dashboard or webhook endpoint, assign that endpoint another private port, such as 127.0.0.1:3131, and route only the required URL through the proxy.
When a port error appears
- Use
ss -tulpnor your operating system’s equivalent to identify the process holding the port. - Change the application’s port environment variable, then restart only that service.
- Check that the proxy’s upstream points to the new port.
- Do not solve the problem by exposing every application port through the firewall; keep internal listeners private.
Recommended deployment patterns
Separate processes with systemd
Run the bot and website as distinct systemd services. Each service gets its own start command, environment file, log stream and restart policy. A website deployment can then be rolled back without stopping the bot, and a bot crash can be restarted without interrupting web traffic. This is the pattern used by single-node deployments in which Nginx fronts a systemd-managed application bound to localhost.

Containers with Docker Compose
Place the proxy, website, bot and supporting services in separate containers on one private Docker network. Publish only the proxy’s 80/443 ports to the host. The website and bot communicate by service name internally, and persistent volumes protect database or uploaded data across container recreation.
Compose makes deployments and rollbacks predictable, but it does not remove the need to monitor memory, disk and CPU. Define health checks and restart policies, and pin compatible image versions instead of automatically pulling untested updates into production.
One application process containing both functions
Some projects package a Discord bot and web dashboard in one Node process and expose a configurable dashboard port. This can be convenient for a small personal project, but it creates a larger failure boundary: a crash or memory leak in the dashboard can take the bot offline. If uptime matters, separate processes or containers are easier to restart, update and troubleshoot.

Step-by-step setup on a single VPS
- Choose an operating system. Linux is the usual recommendation for bot hosting because documentation and service-management tooling are widely available. Red Discord Bot documentation supports Linux and Windows VPSs but specifically recommends Linux.
- Create a non-root administrator. Use SSH keys where possible, disable password login after verifying key access, and apply current operating-system security updates.
- Install the runtime dependencies. Install the version of Node.js, Python, Java or another runtime required by your bot and website. Use isolated virtual environments or lockfiles so one application’s dependency changes do not silently alter the other.
- Deploy the website privately. Configure it to listen on a local address such as
127.0.0.1:3000, not on all public interfaces. Confirm locally with a command such ascurl http://127.0.0.1:3000. - Deploy the bot separately. Put the bot token and configuration in an environment file readable only by its service account. Start it independently and verify gateway login, command registration and reconnect behavior.
- Install and configure the reverse proxy. Create a virtual host for your domain, forward requests to the website’s private port, and enable HTTPS certificate management. If the bot has a public dashboard or webhook, create a separate host or path and forward it to its own private port.
- Set firewall rules. Allow 80 and 443, and permit SSH only from trusted administration addresses when practical. Do not open 3000, 8080, database ports or bot-internal endpoints to the Internet.
- Add supervision. Enable systemd services or container restart policies. Test a controlled stop and restart of each component to confirm that restarting the website leaves the bot running, and vice versa.
- Back up state. Back up databases, uploaded files, configuration and encryption keys according to their recovery requirements. A VPS snapshot alone may not provide application-consistent backups.
- Monitor the machine. Watch memory pressure, CPU saturation, disk usage, network transfer, response latency and service logs. Resize before the machine begins swapping or requests time out.
How much VPS capacity do you need?
There is no universal CPU or RAM number for “a Discord bot.” Requirements depend on guild count, event volume, command complexity, audio or video processing, cache size, database workload, website traffic and traffic spikes. The same bot may be comfortable on a small plan with a simple static site but need substantially more capacity when it processes media or serves a busy dashboard.
Discord.Net deployment guidance says a cheap VPS of about $5 may be sufficient for small-to-medium bots. That is a documentation example, not a current worldwide price or a guarantee; provider pricing, region, IPv4 charges, backups and included transfer change over time. Treat it as a starting point and verify live pricing.

Compare plans by CPU share, RAM, SSD performance, transfer allowance, region, IPv4/IPv6 support, backup options and provider support—not by advertised core count alone. Start small for a lightly used deployment, record real usage, then resize when measurements show a need. A dedicated server is usually unnecessary for a small or medium bot; documentation for Red Discord Bot describes dedicated servers as overpowered and cost-ineffective unless the bot is very large or the host has additional substantial workloads.

Security controls you should not skip
- Protect credentials. Never commit Discord tokens, database credentials, API keys or signing secrets to a public repository. Rotate a token immediately if it is exposed.
- Use HTTPS. Terminate TLS at the reverse proxy and redirect HTTP to HTTPS. Keep certificate renewal automatic, then verify renewal before the first certificate expires.
- Keep application ports private. A local bind means no Python, Node or other application socket is exposed directly to the public Internet. This also ensures that proxy authentication, headers and rate limits are consistently applied.
- Patch regularly. Update the operating system, runtime and dependencies through a planned process, with a rollback path.
- Limit service privileges. Run the bot and website as non-root users with only the filesystem access they require.
- Back up and test restoration. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
- Separate deployments. Independent services or containers reduce the chance that a website update, dependency failure or runaway process takes the bot offline.
Common failure modes and fixes
The website works locally but not through the domain
Check DNS, the proxy’s upstream port, firewall rules and the application bind address. If the app listens only on localhost, the proxy must run on the same VPS; a proxy in another container needs the correct internal network address instead.

The bot disconnects when the website deploys
Look for a shared process, shared supervisor unit or deployment script that restarts the whole application. Split the bot and website into separate services, then restart only the changed unit.
The VPS runs out of memory
Inspect per-process memory, database growth, cache limits and container usage. Reduce unbounded caches, add limits, optimize expensive jobs or move a workload to another VPS before enabling swap as a permanent substitute for adequate RAM.
Requests become slow during bot activity
Measure CPU, disk I/O and database latency at the time of the slowdown. Background jobs such as media conversion can monopolize CPU; queue them, cap concurrency or move them to a worker machine.
Logs consume all storage
Enable rotation and retention, lower unnecessary debug logging and alert on disk usage. Preserve enough history to diagnose failures without retaining unlimited files.
When separate VPSs are the better choice
Co-hosting is economical and simple, but separation is sensible when the bot performs sustained CPU-heavy work, the website has unpredictable traffic, different teams deploy the services, either application needs independent maintenance windows, or a compromise in one application must not endanger the other. Two VPSs also provide a clearer path to independent scaling and maintenance, at the cost of another operating system, firewall, backup plan and monthly bill.
Practical decision checklist
- Can the bot and site run within measured CPU, RAM, storage and transfer limits?
- Are only 80/443 and controlled SSH exposed publicly?
- Does each service have its own port, user, environment and restart policy?
- Can you deploy or restart one without interrupting the other?
- Are HTTPS, token protection, patching, backups and log rotation configured?
- Do monitoring alerts identify resource exhaustion before users notice?
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Discord bot need its own VPS?
No. A small or medium bot can share a VPS with a website when resources are sufficient and the services are isolated. A separate server becomes useful for heavy processing, unpredictable traffic or stronger fault isolation.
Should I expose the bot’s port publicly?
Usually not. The bot normally makes outbound connections to Discord. Keep any dashboard or webhook listener on a private port and publish it through the HTTPS reverse proxy only when required.
Is a $5 VPS guaranteed to be enough?
No. About $5 is a documentation example for small-to-medium bots, not a universal current price or capacity guarantee. Measure your workload and verify the provider’s regional pricing and limits.
