Pixel Now Playing is a phone feature, not a documented native Pixel Watch feature. You can put its song notifications on a Wear OS watch with a third-party companion app called Now On Wrist, but it relays recognition from your Pixel phone rather than identifying music independently. Setup and notification delivery may take troubleshooting.
What Pixel Now Playing does—and what it does not do
Google describes Now Playing as a Pixel phone feature that identifies nearby songs using an on-device music library. Matching song details can appear on the phone’s lock screen, and identified tracks are saved in History, where you can review, share, search for, or open them in a connected music service. Google’s documentation does not describe ambient-song recognition as a built-in Pixel Watch capability.

Google says Now Playing moved from Pixel settings into a standalone app. After downloading it, the app may take up to 24 hours to become usable. It also supports manual searches, in addition to automatic recognition.

Now On Wrist is a third-party workaround described by its developer as forwarding Pixel Now Playing notifications to a Wear OS watch. The Pixel still does the recognition; the companion passes the resulting notification and song details to the watch.

- Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
- Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
- Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]

- Set up Now Playing on the Pixel. Install or open the standalone Now Playing app and confirm that song recognition and notifications work on the phone.
- Install Now On Wrist on the phone and watch. The developer describes it as a companion setup, so make sure both sides are installed.
- Open both apps and allow notifications. Notification access is necessary for the companion to receive the Pixel’s song alerts and relay them.
- Check the watch app if it appears to be waiting. Public user reports describe cases where opening the watch app or revisiting notification access resolved a waiting state. These reports are not a complete compatibility guide, so the exact fix may vary.
Developer-described features include watch-face complications, a Wear OS tile, haptic settings, song history, and shortcuts for playing tracks on the phone. Availability or behavior can depend on setup and notification delivery; these are not native Pixel Watch Now Playing controls documented by Google. The developer’s description and user discussion are at Now On Wrist on Reddit.
What happens to audio and song data?
Google says automatic recognition primarily uses an on-device library. If Now Playing cannot find a local match, it may make a cloud search; it may also request extra song details after an automatic match. In those cases, Google says it sends a short digital audio fingerprint—not raw audio or background conversations. Google says fingerprints are used for recognition, are not stored on its server, and are not shared with other Google or third-party services. The details are in Google’s Pixel Now Playing help.

That passive recognition path is distinct from optional usage and diagnostics sharing. When enabled, Google says those diagnostics may include counts or recognition percentages. The fingerprint description concerns Google’s recognition process; it does not establish separate data-handling practices for the third-party watch companion.

Does Now On Wrist affect battery life?
There is no controlled battery test or general battery-impact figure established here. In the public discussion, the developer reported seeing the phone-side app below 1% battery use in their own settings after a week or two. That is one person’s observation, not a measured result that can predict use on another phone, watch, or setup.

How this differs from music apps and Shazam
| Option | Purpose | How identification or playback works | What appears on the watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Now Playing with Now On Wrist | Show Pixel’s ambient-song recognition on a Wear OS watch | Pixel recognizes nearby music; the companion relays phone notifications | Developer-described complications, tile, history, and playback shortcuts; setup depends on notifications |
| Shazam | Identify a song from a watch | Watch-based, user-initiated identification; it is not established here as mirroring Pixel’s automatic background recognition | Shazam says its app is available for Apple Watch and Android Wear; see its apps page |
| YouTube Music or Spotify on Pixel Watch | Play music or control playback | Playback and streaming, not ambient-song recognition | Google documents support for both services; see Pixel Watch music help |
For playback, Google says an LTE Pixel Watch can stream without the phone nearby. A Wi-Fi model can download music or stream with a nearby phone or Wi-Fi connection. Some YouTube Music features require Premium, and availability depends on region and network plan. Those playback options do not make the watch a native Now Playing recognizer.
