Sometimes—but a reset is not a universal way to bypass a PIN. You may be able to erase a device without entering its screen-lock PIN, but setup afterward can still require an account already linked to it. The right route depends on whether the missing credential is a parental-controls PIN, device screen lock, Apple Screen Time passcode, or account password.
First identify which PIN or password is missing
“Child profile PIN” can mean different things. Before resetting anything, note the device model and identify the credential you cannot enter:

- Parental-controls PIN: Limits or settings within a device’s parental-controls feature.
- Screen-lock PIN: Unlocks the phone or tablet itself.
- Screen Time passcode: Apple’s separate code for Screen Time restrictions.
- Account password: The password for the Google or Apple account associated with the device.
These credentials are not interchangeable, and each has a different recovery route.

For Android on-device parental controls, try PIN recovery first
For the on-device parental-controls feature covered by Google’s Android Help, open the relevant controls in Settings and select Forgot PIN. If a recovery account was configured, use it to reset the PIN. Google says that without a configured recovery account, a factory reset is required. Deleting the PIN turns off those on-device controls.

The menu and requirements may vary with the Android version and device. This guidance is for Android’s on-device parental controls; it is not the same as Family Link supervision.
For a Family Link-supervised child account, use the parent’s controls
If the child’s Google account is supervised with Family Link, a parent can select the child’s device and choose Reset device & delete data in Family Link, following Google’s Family Link instructions. This is a parent-managed reset, not a way to recover an on-device parental-controls PIN.

Keep device reset separate from deleting the child’s Google Account. Google warns that deleting a child’s account before removing it from a device where it is signed in can lock the device and require a factory reset. Account deletion can also remove data and access to purchases. Family Link controls do not all work the same way on every platform: Google says some controls, including app management, Chrome filtering, and screen-time limits, do not apply to a child’s activity on iOS or the web. For a locked Android phone, expect data loss and possible account verification
Google says a locked Android phone must be erased before it can be set up again with a new screen lock. Erasing deletes data stored on the phone. Google’s general guidance says a locked phone can be erased using its power and volume buttons, but the button sequence is device-specific; use the instructions from the manufacturer of the exact model. Erasing the phone does not guarantee that you can complete setup without credentials. For example, Google Pixel Tablet Help says a protected tablet reset through Settings asks for the screen lock. A reset using buttons may require a PIN, password, pattern, or Google Account previously synced to the tablet. Google states that if you cannot provide the required information during setup, you will not be able to use that Pixel Tablet after a factory reset. Apple distinguishes the Screen Time passcode from the device unlock passcode. If Screen Time is managed for a child through Family Sharing, the family organizer or parent or guardian resets the passcode from their own device—not the child’s. Follow Apple’s Screen Time passcode instructions. This recovers the Screen Time passcode; it is not a factory-reset bypass.

Before you reset, check these points
- Confirm the exact device model and the kind of PIN or password it is requesting.
- Try the documented recovery route for that feature before erasing the device.
- Assume local data may be erased, and consider whether it is backed up.
- Make sure the parent or owner can access the account that may be needed during setup.
- Use the manufacturer’s official reset instructions for the exact model; do not assume one Android button sequence applies to all devices.
If the device is an Amazon Fire tablet, Chromebook, smart TV, or uses a manufacturer-specific kids mode, the Google and Apple steps above do not establish its reset behavior. Check the official support guidance for that device and feature.
