Can You Extract ZIP Files in the Browser Safely?

A browser interface does not prove that a ZIP stays on your device—or that its contents are safe. Check how the tool processes files and handle extracted files with care.

Sometimes—but using a browser does not, by itself, make ZIP extraction private or safe. A web tool may process an archive on your device or send it to a server; you need to check that specific tool’s documentation and privacy details. Either way, extraction does not make an archive trustworthy: malicious paths, resource-exhausting archives, parser flaws and harmful files can still pose risks.

What “in the browser” does—and does not—tell you

A browser interface describes how you access a tool, not where the tool processes your ZIP file. Some tools may process files on your device; others may upload them for server-side processing. Do not assume either behavior from the interface alone. Check the tool’s documentation and privacy details for an explicit explanation of file handling. The OWASP guidance on archive risks does not certify any particular browser extractor as local or safe.

Local processing can reduce the risk of sharing a private archive with a service, but it does not establish that the archive or its contents are harmless. These are separate questions: where does extraction happen? and can this archive or its contents cause harm?

What can go wrong when extracting a ZIP?

Paths that escape the extraction folder

An archive can contain entries with crafted paths, such as repeated ../ sequences. If extraction software fails to validate those paths, a file may be written outside the intended destination. OWASP’s malicious file upload guidance discusses this path-traversal risk, often called ZIP Slip. OWASP ASVS 5.0 advises server-side decompression to ignore paths supplied by archive entries.

Symlinks with unexpected targets

Compressed archives can also contain symbolic links. If software preserves or follows them without validation, they can contribute to files being written or accessed in unintended locations. OWASP ASVS advises rejecting compressed uploads that contain symlinks unless they are specifically required and allowlisted. This is primarily a concern for the software or service doing the extraction; it is not evidence that every browser-based tool handles archives the same way.

Archives that consume excessive resources

A small ZIP can expand into a very large amount of data. Such a decompression bomb can consume excessive memory, disk space or processing time. OWASP’s File Upload Cheat Sheet recommends accounting for decompressed size when setting limits and calculating ZIP sizes securely. For personal use, be wary if an archive is unexpectedly large after extraction or the device becomes unusually slow, unresponsive or low on storage.

Malicious files and vulnerable parsers

Extraction software has to parse the archive, and parsers can have vulnerabilities. The files inside can also be harmful or contain active content. OWASP recommends antivirus or sandbox scanning when available, but a scan is an additional check—not proof that a file is safe. Successfully extracting an archive only means the tool unpacked it; it does not establish that opening or running the resulting files is safe. See OWASP’s guidance on malicious file uploads.

How to handle an unfamiliar ZIP more cautiously

  1. Consider whether you need to extract it. If the archive came from an unfamiliar or unexpected source, avoid opening it where possible.
  2. Check how the tool handles files. Read its documentation and privacy details for whether processing happens locally or involves uploading the archive. A claim of local processing addresses file transfer, not whether the archive is safe.
  3. Use maintained extraction software. Avoid tools that are abandoned or whose handling of archives and privacy is unclear.
  4. Pay attention to warnings and resource use. Stop if the extractor reports suspicious paths or other errors, or if extraction causes abnormal memory, storage or processing use. Do not override warnings simply to get the files out.
  5. Keep extracted files untrusted. Do not open or execute them just because extraction completed. Scan with appropriate antivirus or sandbox tools if available, understanding that a clean scan is not a guarantee.

What websites and organizations should control

For a service that accepts archives, a browser-side check is not a sufficient security boundary: users can bypass restrictions implemented only in client-side JavaScript. OWASP’s testing guidance notes this limitation. Server-side processing should validate archive entry paths, handle symlinks deliberately, and impose limits that account for decompressed size. OWASP ASVS 5.0 also addresses ignoring archive-provided paths during server-side decompression and rejecting symlink-containing uploads unless they are needed and allowlisted.

These controls matter for services receiving and extracting uploads. They should not be confused with proof that a browser-only utility uploads files: whether a particular tool transfers an archive must be established from that tool’s own documentation and privacy details.

How to judge an extractor before using it

  • Processing model: Does its documentation say clearly whether extraction is local or server-side?
  • Maintenance: Is the software maintained, so archive-handling problems can be addressed?
  • Resource limits: Does it account for the size of extracted data, not just the compressed ZIP?
  • Archive validation: Does it handle entry paths and symlinks safely?
  • Checks after extraction: Can you scan files before opening them, if a suitable security tool is available?

These are criteria to check, not claims that any particular browser extractor meets them. OWASP’s ASVS 5.0 provides file-handling verification guidance, while the File Upload Cheat Sheet and WSTG guidance describe additional upload and archive risks.
