Current projects focus on game executables and selected system functions; compatibility and performance remain limited.
Is the complete PS5 operating system running on PC?
No publicly documented project here demonstrates Sony’s complete PS5 operating system running as a functional PC environment. The current work is better described as experimental game emulation or executable compatibility: projects attempt to load game files and reproduce or translate enough of the console’s behavior for a game to run.

That distinction matters. Booting a game, displaying its menus, or reaching a gameplay scene does not establish that the operating system is emulated, that the game works reliably, or that it runs at a usable speed.

What the main PS5 projects do
KytyPS5: an emulator project with stated hardware requirements
KytyPS5’s repository describes a PS5 emulator for Windows, Linux, and macOS. Its listed requirements include a 64-bit x86 processor and a GPU capable of Vulkan 1.3 with current drivers. Those are project-stated requirements, not proof that every build or game will work on a system that meets them. The project says it does not distribute games or copyrighted system software.

Tom’s Hardware reported that a KytyPS5 build reached gameplay in Marvel’s Wolverine, but ran at single-digit frames per second. That is a result for a particular build and game, not a general benchmark. Reaching gameplay under those conditions should not be confused with a playable experience.
SharpEmu: early work on execution and system support
SharpEmu’s repository calls it an experimental emulator for Windows, Linux, and macOS. It says the project can load real-game eboot.bin files, execute native CPU instructions, and partially handle GPU-related functionality. The project describes its focus as accuracy and infrastructure rather than game-by-game compatibility.
SharpEmu’s site reported that 76 of 9,176 tracked titles had been tested and 36 had reached gameplay as of October 7, 2026. These are SharpEmu’s own figures for its tracked titles and test categories, not a compatibility rate for all PS5 emulators. Its categories distinguish “Playable,” “Ingame,” “Menus,” “Boots,” and “Nothing”; a title classified as reaching gameplay is not necessarily fully playable.

Perfect for gamers, students, content creators, and home office users seeking reliable performance without the hassle of building a PC themselves. The mature AM4 platform with DDR4 memory offers excellent value and proven stability.
SharpEmu says it is developed for research and educational purposes. Its repository also says users should obtain game copies legally and that the project does not include copyrighted firmware or game data.
AnyPS5: reported executable-porting work, not a ready-to-use emulator
In a September 26, 2026 report, Tom’s Hardware described AnyPS5 as an early-stage effort to port PS5 executables to Linux and Windows. The report said there was no working public build at that time and that substantial work remained on proprietary system libraries and APIs. That is a development milestone, not software consumers can currently rely on.
What “working” means for a PS5 game
Compatibility reports are most useful when they distinguish how far a title gets. A game that boots may stop at a logo; one that reaches menus may fail when gameplay begins; one that reaches gameplay may still have serious graphics, stability, or speed problems. For example, SharpEmu’s own categories separate these stages, while the reported Wolverine test reached gameplay but remained at single-digit frames per second.

- POWERHOUSE 8-CORE GAMING PERFORMANCE — Driven by the AMD Ryzen 7 8700F with 8 cores and 16 threads, boosting up to 5.0 GHz for smooth, responsive gameplay and the ability to handle AAA titles, streaming, and background tasks all at once
- NEXT-GEN BLACKWELL ARCHITECTURE — The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 is powered by NVIDIA's cutting-edge Blackwell GPU architecture, delivering a massive generational leap in rasterization and ray tracing performance so you can experience your games the way they were meant to be played.
- Simplistic Design: Enjoy the latest generation of Windows 11 Home for your everyday needs. *MSI recommends Windows 11 Pro for business use.
- Cool While Gaming: In conjunction with an ARGB fan Air Cooler, the Codex R2 features four system cooling fans; three in the front and one in the rear to pull in cool air and push heat out of the PC.
- Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.
- Boots: the executable starts, but this alone says little about later play.
- Menus: the game reaches its interface, but gameplay may not function.
- Ingame: gameplay is reached, though bugs or performance problems may prevent a usable session.
- Playable: a stronger compatibility claim, but check the project’s definition and test notes before assuming a title works perfectly.
Do not compare title counts across projects unless their tracking methods and definitions match. A count of tested games is not the same as a count of fully playable games.

What PC hardware is needed?
There is no universal hardware specification established for PS5 emulation. KytyPS5 specifically lists a 64-bit x86 processor and a Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU with current drivers. SharpEmu’s requirements and supported behavior are project-specific; meeting another project’s minimum does not guarantee compatibility or performance in SharpEmu, KytyPS5, or any particular game.
Even capable hardware cannot compensate for missing emulator features or game-specific bugs. The single-digit performance reported for one Wolverine test also should not be used to predict results on other PCs or builds.

What to know about games, firmware, and legality
The project repositories say they do not distribute copyrighted games or system software, and SharpEmu asks users to obtain game copies legally. Those statements describe the projects’ policies; they do not settle whether a particular user’s copying, firmware use, or other conduct is lawful. Rules depend on jurisdiction and circumstances, so avoid treating an emulator project’s policy as legal advice.
Sony separately publishes a PS5 open-source software notice. An open-source notice for components does not mean the complete PS5 operating system or proprietary game and firmware files are publicly available for PC use.

Quick Recap
How to judge claims that PS5 emulation has arrived
- Check whether the claim is about the full console operating system, a game executable, or a particular title reaching a specific stage.
- Look for the project name, build, game, test conditions, and compatibility category rather than relying on a headline or short clip.
- Separate a public, usable release from an early-stage project description or a reported development goal.
- Treat a boot or gameplay demonstration as evidence of progress, not proof of stable, full-speed compatibility.
