Yes, you can control Copilot for a Teams meeting. The organizer can open Meeting options, find Copilot and other AI, and use Allow Copilot and Facilitator to set when Copilot is permitted. This is a meeting-level control, not proof that every Copilot feature is disabled across Teams for every user. If the setting is missing, ask your IT admin to check the organization’s configuration.
The important distinction is between stopping live use and stopping post-meeting access. Copilot can work during a meeting without transcription, but if transcription or recording is enabled, meeting content and Copilot may be available afterward. Even with both off, prompts and responses may still be subject to your organization’s Microsoft Purview retention policies.

What “disable Copilot in Teams” can mean
Teams’ documented control lets a meeting organizer decide when Copilot is allowed in a particular meeting. It does not establish a universal personal switch that removes every Copilot surface from Teams, nor does it establish that one organizer setting changes the experience for all meetings in an organization.

- SUPPORT WORK FROM ANYWHERE WITH SYNC: Whether employees are in the office, at home, or somewhere else, Sync device management software helps everyone stay connected by letting you ensure their Logitech video collaboration personal devices are being used and up to date.
- Open workspaces are great for collaboration, but not so great when the noise around you makes it hard to concentrate. Active noise cancellation substantially reduces unwanted ambient sound, so you can get focused and stay focused.
- Great for Music and Talking with immersive sound for listening to music and a noise-canceling mic that ensures that your voice is heard on the other end of a call—not the noise around you.
- On ear controls to adjust volume, start/end calls, and invoke Teams. Plus button controls for power, active noise cancellation (ANC), wireless Bluetooth pairing, and mute on/off or use the flip-to-mute mic feature.
- Certified for Microsoft Teams ensures it’s easy to pick-up or answer Teams meetings, calls, messages, and notifications with a single press to the Teams button. Or apply a longer touch to invoke Cortana voice skills.
- Prevent Copilot use in a particular meeting: Use the meeting’s Copilot setting to disallow it where that choice is available. If you cannot see an option that turns it off, check with your IT administrator rather than assuming the feature is disabled.
- Allow it live, but not after the meeting: Set the meeting to Only during the meeting. Participants can use Copilot while the meeting is live, but this alone does not prevent someone from using it during the meeting.
- Prevent post-meeting access to the meeting conversation through Copilot: Avoid enabling transcription or recording if you do not want the meeting’s conversation available to Copilot in Recap afterward. This is not the same as a guarantee that prompts and responses are not retained.
Microsoft documents the meeting setting and its behavior in Meeting options in Microsoft Teams and Use Copilot without transcribing or recording a Teams meeting or call.
How to change Copilot for a meeting
Make the choice before the meeting starts if you want to limit whether participants can use Copilot. Microsoft’s guidance identifies the control as an organizer-managed meeting option. The exact availability of choices can depend on your organization’s Teams configuration.
- Open the meeting’s options. In Teams, open the meeting and choose Meeting options. The organizer should make this change; if the control is unavailable, contact the IT admin.
- Find the AI control. In the options, open Copilot and other AI and locate Allow Copilot and Facilitator.
- Choose the allowed window. Select the choice that matches the meeting’s policy. Only during the meeting permits live Copilot use without transcription, but does not turn Copilot off during the session. If your options include a choice that disallows Copilot, select it when the goal is to prevent live use as well.
- Save or apply the meeting options. Confirm the change in the meeting controls before the session. If it is important that Copilot not be used, tell participants which policy applies; do not rely on a setting that only restricts post-meeting use.
Microsoft says that after Copilot has started in a meeting or call, it stays on for the remainder of that meeting or call. For that reason, decide on the allowed use window ahead of time rather than expecting to start Copilot and then switch it off partway through.

What each setting means for live use and Recap
The practical consequences depend on two separate decisions: whether Copilot is allowed during the live meeting, and whether transcription or recording is enabled. The setting that limits Copilot to live use does not itself switch transcription on.
| Meeting configuration | Live Copilot | Copilot and conversation after the meeting | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Only during the meeting; transcription and recording remain off | Participants can start and use Copilot during the live meeting. It does not start automatically. | Copilot is not available in the meeting’s Recap afterward when both transcription and recording are off. | This is a time limit, not a ban on live use. Copilot prompts and responses may still be covered by organizational retention policies. |
| Transcription or recording is turned on during the meeting | Copilot may be available according to the meeting’s Copilot setting. | Copilot and conversation content can remain available afterward. Access applies from the point transcription or recording began. | Turning on transcription or recording changes what may be available after the meeting; it does not mean the entire conversation from before that point is captured. |
| A meeting option that disallows Copilot, if available in your organization | Copilot should not be available for that meeting under the selected control. | Do not infer that all Teams Copilot features or organization retention behavior are disabled. | Check the options actually shown to the organizer and confirm broader policy questions with the administrator. |
Microsoft’s guidance on using Copilot without transcription or recording distinguishes live use from post-meeting Recap access. In particular, “Only during the meeting” can allow participants to use Copilot without creating a transcript, while turning transcription or recording on can make Copilot and conversation content available afterward.
What happens to privacy and retained information
Turning off transcription is not the same as turning off every record associated with Copilot. Microsoft says Copilot prompts and responses may be retained under the organization’s Microsoft Purview retention policies. Whether they are retained, and for how long, depends on the organization’s policy; the meeting organizer’s choice not to transcribe does not by itself determine that outcome.

Separate these questions when setting expectations:
- Was a transcript or recording created? This affects whether conversation content can be available in Recap. With both transcription and recording off, Copilot is not available in Recap afterward.
- Could Copilot be used live? That is determined by the meeting’s Copilot setting. A live-use setting can permit Copilot without transcription.
- Are prompts and responses retained? This may be governed by the organization’s Purview retention rules, including when transcription is off. Ask the administrator about the tenant’s policy if retention is material.
Do not treat “no transcript” as a promise that no Copilot-related information is stored. The user-facing meeting instructions explain the retention caveat but do not establish one retention outcome for every organization.
Who controls the setting—and why it may be missing
The meeting organizer controls the meeting-level option when it is available. An IT administrator may also affect what settings are exposed through the organization’s configuration. Microsoft advises users to contact their IT admin if the relevant Copilot meeting option is not visible.

If you do not see Copilot and other AI or Allow Copilot and Facilitator, that absence does not establish that Copilot is off. The user-facing documentation does not specify a single organization-wide configuration path that applies to every tenant, so ask the admin whether the meeting policy allows organizers to manage Copilot and whether the policy is being applied to your account or meeting.
Likewise, do not assume that changing one meeting changes your default for future meetings. The documented control discussed here is meeting-level. For a broader restriction across users or Teams surfaces, an administrator needs to confirm which organization policies apply; this meeting setting alone does not substantiate a universal tenant-wide shutdown.
Licensing is not an on/off switch
Copilot capabilities can vary with the license assigned to a user, including access to reasoning over work data. That is capability context, not a substitute for the meeting’s Allow Copilot and Facilitator setting. A license difference does not, by itself, tell an organizer whether Copilot is permitted in a specific meeting or whether meeting content will be available in Recap.

Microsoft explains the distinction in How Copilot Chat works with and without a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. If a participant can or cannot use a particular capability, verify both the assigned license and the meeting options rather than treating either as the whole explanation.
Common situations and what to do
You want nobody to use Copilot during the meeting
Before the session, open meeting options and inspect Allow Copilot and Facilitator. Choose an option that disallows Copilot if your organization provides one. Only during the meeting is not the right choice for this goal because it still allows live use. If there is no disallow option, or the control is missing, ask the IT admin what restriction is available for your meeting.
You are comfortable with live use but not a Copilot recap
Choose Only during the meeting and keep both transcription and recording off. Participants must still actively select Copilot in the meeting controls; it does not start automatically. This prevents Copilot from being available in Recap under the documented condition that neither transcription nor recording was turned on.

Transcription or recording was enabled partway through
Do not assume the session remains equivalent to one with those features off. Microsoft says that when transcription or recording is turned on during the meeting, Copilot and conversation content can be available afterward, with access applying from the time transcription or recording began. The source guidance does not say that earlier conversation content becomes available from before that point.
Copilot has already been started
Microsoft’s help page says Copilot stays on for the duration of the meeting or call once started. If the meeting’s policy is to prevent use, set the option before the session and do not start Copilot. For a meeting already in progress, consult your administrator about available controls rather than assuming the organizer can end Copilot after it has started.
You cannot find the option
Check the meeting options for Copilot and other AI. If Allow Copilot and Facilitator is absent, contact the IT admin. The missing control could reflect the organization’s configuration; the help documentation does not support concluding from its absence alone that Copilot is disabled everywhere.
Quick Recap
Before you schedule or join
- Organizer: Set the permitted Copilot window in meeting options before participants begin using the feature.
- For a full meeting ban: Confirm that the selected option actually disallows live Copilot, not merely use after the meeting.
- For no post-meeting Recap access: Keep transcription and recording off; a live Copilot option can still be permitted separately.
- For retention questions: Ask the IT admin about Microsoft Purview policies, because prompts and responses may be retained even without transcription.
- For missing or inconsistent controls: Have the admin verify the organization’s configuration and the meeting’s policy rather than assuming that a participant’s license or a single meeting setting explains everything.
