Removing that folder can erase local bookmarks, browsing history and other Chrome profile information. If you only want to clear browsing data or free some space, use Chrome’s built-in cleanup controls instead.
First confirm which Google app and folder you mean. The folder name alone does not establish that it is safe to remove.

What does “Google Local AppData” mean?
Windows stores per-user application data in the current account’s AppDataLocal folder, available through %LOCALAPPDATA%. Google documents Chrome’s common user-data location on Windows Vista and later as C:Users<user>AppDataLocalGoogleChromeUser Data. The actual location can be configured, so verify the folder before taking action; the documented path is a common location, not a guarantee for every installation. See Google’s Chrome Enterprise FAQ and Microsoft’s known-folder documentation.
The User Data directory contains Chrome user profiles and their local information. It is not the same as Chrome’s application installation directory. Nor does every folder with “Google” in its name necessarily hold the same data or have the same consequences if removed.

What happens if you delete Chrome’s User Data folder?
Deleting the directory, or a profile folder within it, can remove local Chrome information. Google warns that deleting the Chrome User Data directory can permanently remove bookmarks, browsing history and other saved profile information. Exactly what is lost depends on the folder you delete and your account and sync configuration. Google’s FAQ describes the risk; it does not promise that signing in again will restore every local item.
Being signed in is not a complete recovery plan. Google says some information may remain on its servers if you were signed in and saved data to your Google Account, but that does not guarantee that every item stored locally will be recoverable. Before deleting a profile directory, preserve anything important and make sure any backup or sync you rely on is usable. Google’s Chrome uninstall guidance explains this distinction.

Should you clear browsing data or delete the folder?
For routine cleanup, Chrome’s Delete browsing data screen is safer and more targeted than removing the whole profile directory. It lets you choose a time range and the categories to clear. Use the scope that matches your goal:

| Method | What it removes | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Delete selected browsing-data categories | Only the selected categories and time range, such as history, cookies and site data, cached files, download history, autofill data, site settings or hosted-app data. | Cookies can sign you out of websites and remove site preferences. Clearing the download history list does not delete the downloaded files. Passwords and extensions are managed separately. |
| Delete a profile folder or the entire User Data directory | Local data in the folder you remove, potentially including bookmarks, browsing history and other profile information. | Broader risk of permanent loss. Back up important information and confirm any sync or backup before proceeding. |
Google lists the available categories and their effects in Delete browsing data in Chrome. Its cookie guidance also explains that clearing cookies can sign you out and remove saved preferences: Clear, enable, and manage cookies in Chrome.

How to clean Chrome data without deleting the whole folder
- Confirm the app and location. If the folder is Chrome’s, check whether it is the common
%LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChromeUser Datalocation or a configured alternative. Do not assume another Google-named folder is Chrome’s profile. - Open Chrome’s cleanup screen. In Chrome, select More (the three-dot menu) > Delete browsing data. Google documents this control in its browsing-data instructions.
- Choose the time range and categories. Select only the data you intend to remove. Review the cookie warning if you need to stay signed in or preserve website preferences.
- Delete the selected data. The cleanup applies to the categories and time range you selected; it does not remove downloaded files when you clear only the download history list.
If you intend to remove Chrome or its profile
If your goal is to uninstall Chrome, follow Google’s Windows uninstall procedure rather than manually deleting a folder of uncertain purpose. On Windows 10, Google’s procedure includes an option to delete profile information. Google states, “If you delete profile information when you uninstall Chrome, the data won’t be on your computer anymore.” Some information saved to a Google Account might remain on Google’s servers, but this is not a guarantee that all local data can be recovered. See Uninstall Google Chrome.
Do not treat uninstalling Chrome as automatically equivalent to removing every possible Local AppData folder on every Windows version. If you are considering manual deletion instead, first identify the exact folder and preserve anything you may need.
