Can You Connect an External Hard Drive to a Router?

A router can share an external hard drive over your home network—but only if its model supports USB storage sharing. Check compatibility, enable the service, and connect using the router’s documented local method.

Yes—if your router supports USB storage sharing. A USB port by itself is not enough. Check the instructions for your exact router model, connect a compatible drive, enable the router’s sharing service, then open it from a device on the same home network using the protocol the router supports, such as SMB or FTP.

Before you connect the drive

Find the router’s model number and check its official manual or support guide for USB storage sharing. Confirm the supported drive formats, capacity limits, and power requirements. Manufacturers document this feature for specific models; it is not a standard function of every router with a USB port.

File-system support varies. For example, one TP-Link manual lists FAT32 and NTFS, while TP-Link support notes that some models support exFAT or HFS+. Do not reformat a drive just to try to make it work until you have checked the model documentation and backed up its files.

Some external drives need a separate power supply, and compatibility can depend on the drive enclosure as well as the disk. If your drive came with a power adapter, connect it as required.

How to set up router-based file sharing

  1. Check compatibility. Look up the router’s exact model in its official USB storage-sharing instructions. Verify supported formats and any drive or power limitations.
  2. Connect the drive. Plug it into the router’s USB port and connect its power supply if needed. Wait for the router to detect it. NETGEAR says some supported drives on documented models can take up to two minutes to become ready.
  3. Enable sharing in the router settings. Sign in to the router’s administration interface and turn on the storage-sharing service described in its instructions. If the router offers user accounts or permissions, set them up; TP-Link’s current guide recommends enabling Secure Sharing.
  4. Connect from a device on your home network. Use the router’s documented local access method. Depending on the model, this may be SMB or FTP and may require a router hostname or local network address. Follow the router’s own directions rather than assuming another manufacturer’s menu path or address applies.
  5. Safely remove the drive. If the router provides a safe-removal or disconnect option, use it before unplugging the drive. A TP-Link manual warns that safe removal helps avoid data damage.

What you can—and cannot—expect

A router that shares USB storage can provide a simple place to access files from devices on the local network. Its features depend on the model: available protocols, supported formats, permissions, and access paths are not universal. The router’s documentation is the authority for what your setup supports.

Local sharing does not automatically mean the drive is available over the internet. Remote access is a separate feature and may use different protocols and security settings. In the TP-Link setup described in its guide, remote USB access uses FTP and does not support SMB remotely; that detail should not be generalized to other brands or all TP-Link models. Do not enable remote access unless you specifically need it and understand the router’s security guidance.

If the drive or files do not appear

The router does not detect the drive

  • Confirm that the exact router model supports USB storage sharing, not merely that it has a USB port.
  • Check that the drive’s file system is supported by that model.
  • Connect any required external power supply, and check the router documentation for drive or enclosure compatibility.

The drive appears, but you cannot open it

  • Make sure sharing is enabled in the router settings.
  • Use the local protocol and network address specified for your router; access paths differ between models and manufacturers.
  • Check the account and permissions configured on the router.

Windows cannot connect over SMB

SMB troubleshooting depends on both the router’s implementation and the computer’s security settings. Check the router maker’s model-specific guidance first. Do not make weakening Windows security your routine first fix.

What to check when choosing a setup

If you are deciding whether your existing router can do the job, compare its documented local protocol, supported drive formats and capacity, power requirements, and available access controls against how you plan to use the files. If the router lacks USB storage sharing, a USB port alone will not add the feature; you will need a different supported way to share storage on your network.
