Sometimes. A few Canon cameras can charge a compatible battery in-camera over USB when used with a specified adapter; others require a separate charger. Check your exact camera model and the battery label before connecting anything—having a USB port or AC adapter does not mean the camera can charge its battery.
First, identify your camera and battery
Find the camera’s full model name and read the model number printed on the battery. Then consult that camera’s official Canon manual or specifications. Look for “USB charging” or “charging the battery,” and confirm that the instructions name your battery model and the required accessory. Connector shape alone is not evidence of compatibility.

Canon documents different arrangements for different cameras: the EOS R, PowerShot G9 X, and PowerShot V1 have documented in-camera USB charging arrangements, while manuals for other models specify separate battery chargers. Those examples are not interchangeable across Canon cameras.
Which charging method fits?

When in-camera USB charging is supported
EOS R: LP-E6N with PD-E1
Canon’s EOS R guidance says an LP-E6N battery can be charged in-camera with the PD-E1 USB power adapter. It also says the older LP-E6 cannot be charged this way. Charging stops if you operate the camera. Canon’s guidance for this model also cautions against continuous charging for more than 24 hours and describes charging-state indicators; follow the EOS R instructions rather than applying those indicators or limits to another model. Canon also lists USB charging in the EOS R6 specifications. Check that camera’s own instructions for the supported battery and power arrangement before using the feature.
PowerShot G9 X: CA-DC30
Canon lists in-camera USB charging for the PowerShot G9 X through the CA-DC30 Compact Power Adapter. Canon gives an approximate charging time of five hours for this model, with the actual time varying according to how much charge remains in the battery. This is a model-specific estimate, not a general charging time for Canon cameras. See the PowerShot G9 X specifications.

PowerShot V1
Canon’s PowerShot V1 specifications also mark USB charging as supported. Use the V1’s own instructions to determine the compatible battery and charging setup.
When you need a separate battery charger
If your camera’s manual directs you to remove the battery, use a charger made for that exact battery model. Canon manuals specify particular battery packs for their chargers and warn against charging other battery types with them. For example, the EOS 500D manual gives instructions for its LP-E5 battery, while the EOS D60 guide covers the BP-511 pack. These are examples of model-specific compatibility, not universal charger recommendations.

- Check the battery’s printed model number.
- Confirm in the camera manual which charger is specified for that battery.
- Place the battery in the charger in the indicated orientation and follow its charging-status instructions.
Do not use improvised wiring, bare-wire charging, or a charger chosen only because the battery appears to fit. If you are buying a replacement charger, verify the exact battery compatibility before purchase.

“USB power,” “AC adapter,” and “battery charger” describe different functions. An adapter can supply power to operate a camera without charging a removable or internal battery. Canon says the ACK800 AC Adapter Kit for the PowerShot A480 cannot charge the camera’s batteries inside the camera; see Canon’s PowerShot A480 accessory information. Check the accessory’s stated function and your camera manual rather than assuming that camera power also means battery charging.

If the battery does not charge
- Confirm the battery is oriented correctly in the camera or charger.
- Check that the adapter or charger matches the battery and camera instructions.
- Use the manual to interpret the camera’s charging indicator or any error message; indicator behavior differs by model.
- If the battery’s runtime has dropped sharply despite normal charging, it may have reached the end of its useful life. Canon’s EOS D60 guide notes this possibility; verify the replacement battery model for your camera before buying.
- If an error persists, consult Canon support for the exact camera and battery rather than trying an undocumented workaround.
