Can You Change DVD Region Code? Understanding DVD Region Coding

On a Mac, DVD Player can change a drive's region only five times including the original setting, and the fifth setting is permanent. Standalone players and external drives vary by model and system.

Sometimes, but only on some hardware. On a Mac, Apple says DVD Player can change the region setting of the DVD drive when it meets a coded disc from a different region, and it allows only five settings, counting the original one. The fifth setting is permanent. Many standalone DVD players cannot be changed at all, and the region code is only one of the two compatibility checks a disc has to pass.

What a region code does

A DVD carries a region code that marks the markets where its owner intended it to play. A player or drive carries its own region setting. For a coded disc to play, the two generally have to match. Apple states this directly for Mac drives: the region of the DVD and the region of the Mac drive must match for playback.

Region is not the only check. A disc also has a video format, such as NTSC or PAL, and a player has to support that format as well. A disc can pass the region test and still fail on format, so both should be checked before buying or travelling with a disc.

Changing the region on a Mac

Apple’s Mac DVD Player support instructions describe a change-on-demand flow rather than a settings menu. The basic sequence is:

  1. Insert a DVD coded for a region different from your drive’s current setting.
  2. When DVD Player prompts you to change the drive’s region, accept the prompt.
  3. Let playback proceed. The change is now counted against the drive’s limit.

Apple’s instructions do not describe what happens when no prompt appears, so do not assume a particular disc will trigger one. Treat the prompt as the only supported route.

The five-setting limit

Apple says the region code of a DVD drive can be set only five times, including the original setting. The table below shows how that count works in practice.

Setting number What it means
1 The original region the drive shipped or was first set to, which counts toward the limit
2 to 4 Changes still available, each made by accepting a region-change prompt
5 The final setting. Apple says it becomes permanent and locks the drive to that region

Because the original setting uses one of the five, a drive that has never been changed still has only four changes left. Once the fifth setting is used, no further region change is possible on that drive. Apple’s page does not give a publication date in the material reviewed, so check the current Mac DVD Player support page before relying on the exact wording.

Standalone DVD players

Standalone players behave differently from computer drives, and the rules depend on the brand and model. The clearest published example comes from Sony’s U.S. support article, which covers certain U.S. players and recorders.

Sony’s covered U.S. players

According to Sony, these products support Region 1 and NTSC. Sony states: “There is no way to override the region code or make the player support a different video format.” That statement applies to the products listed in that article. It is not a statement about every Sony model, and it is not a statement about players from other manufacturers.

Sony describes its players as being given the region code for the market where they are sold, and says a player will not play a disc coded for another region.

Region 0 and All discs

Sony says its covered players support Region 0 and All discs. Region 0 and All discs are not restricted to one market, so they are the easiest case to check. Confirm the disc’s marking and the player’s documentation before assuming it will play.

PAL and SECAM

Sony says the covered devices do not support PAL or SECAM. This is a video-format limit separate from region coding. A region-compatible PAL disc may still not play on a device that only handles NTSC, so check the format as well as the region.

External DVD drives

An external USB DVD drive is a common option for a computer without an optical drive, but it is not automatically region-free. Its behaviour depends on the drive maker, the model and the operating system.

Transcend’s FAQ says region code amendments for its external DVD drives are not supported on macOS 10.14 and later. That statement is limited to Transcend’s product context. Other makers may behave differently, and the FAQ’s date is not shown in the material reviewed.

For Windows, the material reviewed did not include a current official support article describing region-change steps. Readers on Windows should look for their drive maker’s own documentation rather than relying on generic menu instructions.

Buying a region-free or multi-region player

Before buying, check the following:

  • The model’s stated region support, in the manufacturer’s own specifications or manual.
  • Which video formats the model plays. NTSC-only players will not play PAL discs.
  • Whether the manufacturer documents region-free or multi-region behaviour for that model.
  • For a computer drive, whether the maker documents support for your macOS or Windows version.

Do not assume that a player application, a firmware change or a third-party tool will override a drive or player lock. The sources reviewed do not establish that for any device.
