You can add RAM only if your exact laptop configuration has replaceable memory or a compatible, available memory slot. Some laptops have RAM soldered to the system board, and others combine soldered memory with one or more slots. Check the documentation for your specific model before buying a module or opening the case.
How to check whether your laptop RAM is upgradeable
- Identify the exact laptop. Find its full model name and, where applicable, its model number, product number or machine type. A family name alone may cover configurations with different memory layouts.
- Open the manufacturer’s support page for that exact model. Look for its Maintenance and Service Guide, Hardware Reference Guide or owner manual. HP directs users to model-specific maintenance or hardware documents for memory details; see HP’s memory guidance.
- Read the memory and service sections. Note whether memory is soldered, how many physical slots there are, which slots are occupied, and the maximum supported total memory. Also check supported module capacities and speeds, and whether the listed capacity includes memory soldered to the board.
- Use a compatibility tool only as a cross-check. Crucial’s Upgrade Selector lets you select a manufacturer, product line and model. Its System Scanner can identify candidate upgrades for a scanned computer. Compare any suggested part with the laptop manufacturer’s guide before ordering.
- Verify the specific module or kit. Check the exact part number, memory generation, form factor, capacity per module, total capacity, supported speed and slot arrangement. Do not assume a module will work just because it fits physically or has a compatible-looking DDR label.
Is my laptop RAM soldered?
The service or hardware guide for the exact model is the best place to check. If it says the memory is soldered and shows no replaceable slot, a standard RAM upgrade is not available: a SO-DIMM cannot be added where there is no slot. Some laptops have both soldered memory and a separate slot, so soldered RAM does not automatically mean there is no upgrade path. Confirm the documented layout and supported configuration.

An operating system’s reported slot count is not proof that an empty physical slot is available. Check the hardware documentation; if the guide calls for physical inspection, follow its instructions rather than opening the machine on guesswork.

Use the maximum supported total stated in the model-specific guide, and distinguish that total from the capacity of each removable module. For example, a stated system maximum may account for both soldered memory and installed modules; it does not necessarily mean a single slot accepts a module of that full capacity. The guide should also specify supported module sizes and speeds, or point to the permitted configurations.

What RAM is compatible with my laptop?
Compatibility depends on the laptop’s precise configuration, not just its brand or broad product family. Confirm all of these before buying:
- Exact model or product number and documented memory configuration
- DDR generation and SO-DIMM form factor, if the laptop uses removable laptop memory
- Supported capacity per module and maximum total capacity
- Memory speed supported by the laptop
- Number of slots, which are occupied, and whether any memory is soldered
- The candidate module’s exact part number and, for a kit, what it contains
A memory kit listing is not a laptop compatibility guarantee. Crucial, for example, lists a 16 GB kit made up of two 8 GB DDR4-3200 SO-DIMMs; that describes the kit, not a recommendation for an unspecified laptop. Check any candidate against your own model’s documentation.

- Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
- Compatible with select DDR4 SODIMM capable Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) computer systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
- Not compatible with desktop (DIMM), DDR2, DDR3, DDR5, ECC Registered (RDIMM), ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM), or ECC Unbuffered (ECC UDIMM) memory types
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
What to do if there is no upgradeable slot
If the documentation shows only soldered memory and no replaceable slot, there is no conventional module upgrade. You can keep using the installed memory, reduce memory demand by closing unnecessary apps or browser tabs, or choose a different device configured with the amount of RAM you need. Soldering memory onto a laptop board is not a routine consumer upgrade.

For general SO-DIMM handling, Crucial’s installation guide advises consulting the owner’s manual for slot location, aligning the module’s notch, inserting it at an angle, then pressing it down until the retaining clips engage. Avoid using tools to remove or install memory, and take precautions against static damage.
