xMEMS’ µCooling is a thin, solid-state component designed to direct airflow at hot spots inside devices. The company lists its XMC-4800 for smartphones and says it is shipping µCooling products for next-generation smartphone designs. But the available information does not identify a retail phone using the chip or establish that it permanently prevents overheating. It is a promising thermal-management approach, not a proven universal fix.
What xMEMS µCooling does
Rather than relying on a conventional fan with rotating blades, µCooling uses microscopic silicon structures that vibrate at ultrasonic frequencies to generate localized airflow. xMEMS describes the architecture as all-silicon and made with semiconductor processes; IEEE Spectrum’s technical description of the earlier XMC-2400 discusses piezoelectric actuation and an air chamber-and-valve arrangement. The company says the component is about 1 mm thick.

The idea is active, targeted cooling: move air near a heat-producing component. That differs from graphite sheets and vapor chambers, which spread heat across a larger area. Local airflow would work alongside a phone’s broader thermal design, not automatically replace heat spreaders or remove heat from every part of the device. Its effect would depend on the airflow path, heat load, component placement and power budget.

NEVEIKIA mobile phone cooling can cool down when connected to a power source.(Attention: It is best to remove the phone case when using it for a better experience!)
- Quick cooling: Dual engine, cooling principle is the same as a refrigerator, not ordinary fan cooling. It can cool your phone in "3 to 5 seconds", avoiding overheating and ensuring a stable live streaming or gaming experience.
- Dual power supply design: supports powering the radiator through a mobile phone, and can also be connected to an external power source for use; When connected to an external power source, it can provide stable power to both the radiator and the phone, avoiding interruption of heat dissipation due to insufficient power during long-term use and ensuring continuous and stable heat dissipation performance.
- Silent engine cooling: The fan with dual silent design can effectively dissipate air from all directions, providing stronger cooling effect without interfering with your games or Vlog programs.
- Expanded cooling area: Approximately 2.82x1.29 inches of extreme thermal conductivity cooling area, covering the CPU and battery module, protecting your phone from blackening or sudden shutdown.
| XMC-4800 specification | xMEMS-published figure |
|---|---|
| Airflow | Up to 48 cc/s |
| Back pressure | Up to 1,100 Pa |
| Dimensions | 9.93 × 14.35 × 1.13 mm |
| Power consumption | Approximately 240 mW |
The “up to” airflow and back-pressure figures describe component capabilities; they do not say what a phone will achieve in a particular enclosure or workload. Likewise, the dimensions and power draw matter to phone designers, but by themselves do not show how much cooler a handset would run or whether it could sustain higher performance.
Is it shipping in smartphones?
In an August 18, 2026 statement, xMEMS said it was shipping µCooling products for next-generation smartphone designs. That is evidence of component shipments and design activity, not confirmation of a consumer phone launch. The company’s product page names smartphones as an application, but the cited material does not name a phone maker or a retail handset that contains XMC-4800. A planned CES 2026 demonstration announcement is not evidence of retail availability either.

The published specifications do not establish how much XMC-4800 lowers a phone’s temperature, how long a device could maintain peak performance, or whether it would prevent thermal throttling. The cited material contains no independent, controlled smartphone test or measured result for a phone using the component. xMEMS’ descriptions and figures should therefore be treated as manufacturer claims about a component, not as proof of a specific phone outcome.

- 【Quiet Operation】This smartphone cooler adopts noise reduction design, and the operating noise in silent mode is only 30db, allowing you to play games or watch videos comfortably.
- 【Vertical Air Duct Design】The vertical air duct design of FunCooler 5 smartphone cooling fan focuses on the user's actual experience and innovative ergonomic design, which provides a comfortable grip and does not dissipate heat to the hand.
A separate xMEMS product illustrates why figures must stay attached to their context: the company said its XMC-1200 could reduce temperature by up to 10°C at a 1 W thermal load in a smart-glasses use case. That claim concerns XMC-1200 and wearables; it is not a result for XMC-4800 or smartphones.
Nor does localized airflow imply a permanent cure. Phone heat can depend on workload, ambient conditions and the device’s overall design. A cooling component may help manage a hotspot, but the evidence does not show that it can eliminate every cause of overheating across phones and usage conditions.

How it compares with other cooling approaches
Conventional heat spreaders distribute heat; µCooling is intended to move air near a hotspot. Some niche gaming phones have also experimented with miniature fans or external cooling attachments, according to IEEE Spectrum. Those accessories are a separate category: they are not xMEMS chips and do not demonstrate the performance or availability of an internal µCooling integration.
A meaningful comparison would need to test the same phone, workload and environmental conditions, while accounting for temperature, sustained performance, power use, noise or vibration, space, and sealing requirements. The cited sources do not provide such a head-to-head smartphone test. Until a named handset and controlled results are available, it is more accurate to describe µCooling as a potential addition to phone thermal design than to call it better than existing solutions.
What to watch for in a phone announcement
- A named handset and confirmation from its maker that it includes the component.
- Device-level test results showing temperatures and sustained performance under a defined workload, rather than component specifications alone.
- Information about power consumption in the phone, airflow routing, acoustic or vibration effects, and how the design handles dust and water resistance.
Until those details accompany a consumer launch, XMC-4800 is best understood as a component intended for future smartphone designs—not proof that overheating has been solved.
