CAN XL expands the CAN data-link layer with data fields up to 2048 bytes, a listed data-phase rate ceiling of 20 Mbit/s, and separate fields for frame priority and acceptance filtering. For industrial robots, HMIs, and machines, that creates options for backbone and sub-backbone networks carrying larger messages—but it does not mean existing equipment supports CAN XL or that every application will run faster.
What changes with CAN XL?
CAN XL is the third generation of the CAN data-link layer. It retains CAN’s arbitration approach while adding larger data fields, a higher data-phase rate ceiling, and fields that support higher-layer configuration and identification. CAN in Automation (CiA) describes it as intended for backbone and sub-backbone networks and easier integration into TCP/IP systems.

CAN CC, CAN FD, and CAN XL at a glance
| CAN generation | Maximum data-field length | Listed maximum bit rate |
|---|---|---|
| CAN CC | 8 bytes | 1 Mbit/s |
| CAN FD | 64 bytes | 8 Mbit/s |
| CAN XL | 2048 bytes | 20 Mbit/s |
These figures are ceilings listed in CiA’s August 2026 comparison, not measured application throughput. The achievable rate depends on physical network design and attached hardware; CiA says rates of 20 Mbit/s and beyond require CAN SIC XL transceivers. CiA’s CAN XL overview explains the protocol and physical-layer considerations, while its August 2026 brochure provides the comparison figures.
Larger frames and faster data phase
A CAN XL data field can range from 1 to 2048 bytes, compared with the 8-byte CAN CC and 64-byte CAN FD ceilings. A larger field can reduce the need to divide a large higher-layer message across many small frames. Whether it improves efficiency depends on message sizes, scheduling, and network configuration.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
CAN XL’s listed data-phase ceiling is 20 Mbit/s. Its data phase uses changed bit timing and transceiver mode, so the protocol limit alone cannot predict a machine’s effective rate or latency.
Priority and acceptance are distinct
CAN XL uses an 11-bit priority ID and a 32-bit acceptance field. The priority ID determines frame priority; the acceptance field is used by the controller’s acceptance filter and can carry node-address or content-indicating information. Separating these roles gives network designers more flexibility in how they handle arbitration and filtering.

Higher-layer fields and Ethernet/IP
The service data type (SDT) and virtual CAN identifier (VCID) provide higher-layer protocol configuration and identification. CiA’s document catalog also lists a multi-PDU protocol for mapping messages compliant with different higher-layer protocols into one CAN XL frame. CiA describes CAN XL as suitable for easier TCP/IP integration and documents Ethernet frames embedded in CAN XL frames. This can make it a possible bridge in an automation architecture, but does not remove the need for compatible gateways, software stacks, and system validation.

CiA describes two CRC fields and a mechanism intended to prevent a long frame from blocking the network, allowing higher-priority control information through while retaining the long frame’s integrity. These features do not by themselves establish that a particular traffic mix will meet its deadlines; latency and schedulability still need analysis for the actual network.

What could CAN XL mean for robots, HMIs, and machines?
Robots and industrial machines
CiA identifies robots and printing machines among varied industrial applications that use CANopen networks. That establishes an industrial context for CAN-family networking, not confirmed CAN XL deployments in any particular robot or machine.
For a machine or robot, CAN XL could serve as a backbone or sub-backbone for traffic too bulky for legacy CAN framing, while retaining priority arbitration for control traffic. A design needs to specify which traffic uses CAN XL, its deadlines and topology, and how legacy CAN CC or CAN FD nodes connect—if needed—through compatible interfaces or gateways. These are engineering implications of the protocol features, not measured deployment outcomes.

HMIs
An HMI could benefit if it exchanges larger configuration, diagnostic, or service messages with a machine network. The available CiA material does not quantify HMI performance or confirm CAN XL support in a particular HMI product. A higher maximum bus rate alone is not evidence that an operator interface will feel faster.

Do not assume plug-and-play compatibility. CAN XL nodes support CAN XL frame formats, but that does not establish universal compatibility with legacy CAN FD or CAN CC devices. If a system mixes generations, verify how each device connects and whether a compatible controller, transceiver, gateway, and higher-layer protocol stack are available for the exact deployment.

What to check before adopting CAN XL
- Define the network role. Decide whether CAN XL is intended for a backbone or sub-backbone, and identify which messages belong on it.
- Check frame and hardware support. Confirm CAN XL support in the controller and transceiver, and establish how any CAN CC or CAN FD devices will interface with the network.
- Engineer timing and topology. Set data-phase timing and assess the physical network, traffic mix, priorities, deadlines, and expected latency. Do not treat the 20 Mbit/s ceiling as guaranteed throughput.
- Confirm higher-layer support. Check that the required protocol stack, configuration fields, and any TCP/IP or Ethernet integration components work together in the intended architecture.
- Test interoperability and conformance. Validate the full system with the relevant specifications and test plans. CiA’s catalog lists CAN XL specification and test-plan documents: CAN XL documents.
CiA’s CAN XL overview, document catalog, and August 2026 brochure are the cited sources for protocol features and comparison figures. Hardware availability and document revisions can change, so implementation decisions should be based on current model-specific support and the relevant specification revision.
