Usually, no: the Windows Settings agent on Copilot+ PCs can suggest a setting but, according to Microsoft, it does not change settings automatically. You must select Apply, and Microsoft says you can undo an agent-made change. Search results that look different may instead reflect background indexing, a changed search preference, or personalization. Check the specific setting before troubleshooting the index.
What “automatically” can mean in Windows Search
A suggested change from the Settings agent
On Copilot+ PCs, Windows Settings can use an agent to suggest settings. Microsoft states, “The agent only suggests settings; it doesn’t make any changes automatically.” You have to choose Apply to make a suggested change, and Microsoft says the change can be undone. This feature description applies to Copilot+ PCs, not every Windows device. See Microsoft’s Exploring Windows Settings.

Indexing that happens in the background
Windows updates its search index as files change. That maintenance happens in the background and is not, by itself, evidence that a Search preference was reset. The index’s scope and whether Windows indexes file contents are configurable separately. Microsoft explains these options in Search indexing in Windows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDifferent results or recommendations
Search results and suggestions can change without an indexing setting changing. Windows can personalize Start and search based on app launches, and Settings can show recommendations or suggested content. These are distinct from indexing locations and search permissions. Microsoft documents related controls in Privacy settings for Recommendations & offers in Windows 11.

A changed preference
Search permissions, history, SafeSearch, and indexing scope have their own controls. If one now differs from your preference, the documentation does not establish a universal cause for unexplained changes. Identify the exact control and your Windows version before assuming Search changed it on its own.
Undo the specific change
Use the path for the setting that changed rather than resetting Windows settings broadly. Windows 11 labels and page layouts can vary by update; Windows 10 uses different navigation. Microsoft’s Windows Search and Privacy page covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 navigation.

Indexing scope or locations
- Windows 11: Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
- Review Find my files and the indexed locations. Choose Classic or Enhanced to match where you keep files, and adjust customized locations if needed.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Search > Searching Windows.
Classic indexes common user folders by default; Enhanced indexes all user folders and files. Broader indexing can use more system resources. Indexing file properties and indexing file contents are also separate choices, so a document may be found by name but not by words inside it, or vice versa. The appropriate scope depends on where you store files and what you want searchable.
Search permissions, history, or web-search behavior
- Windows 11: Open Settings > Privacy & security > Search permissions.
- Review SafeSearch, cloud content search, and device history according to the behavior you want.
- Use Clear device search history to remove locally saved search history.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Search > Permissions & History.
Personalization or Settings suggestions
On Windows 11, inspect Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers. The app-launch tracking control affects Start and search personalization; the page also documents a control for suggested content in Settings. On older installations the relevant privacy page may still be labeled General. Microsoft describes the transition in General privacy settings in Windows.

A change applied by the Settings agent
If you used the agent on a Copilot+ PC, use its undo control if available. Microsoft says agent-driven changes can be undone; its instructions are on the Settings agent support page.

Windows version and feature availability
The Settings agent described here is for Copilot+ PCs. Indexing and privacy paths differ between Windows 10 and 11, and Microsoft notes that newer Windows 11 versions are replacing the older General privacy page with Recommendations & offers. Labels can change with updates or staged rollouts, so if a path does not match your screen, use Settings search for the page or control name. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, as Microsoft notes in Change privacy settings in Windows.
