An ordinary website cannot silently capture your entire desktop. To use the browser’s Screen Capture API, a page must start a user-initiated action, the browser must show a source-selection and permission prompt, and you must choose a tab, window, or monitor. After you approve, the selected video can be recorded locally or sent to the site. A page can also create an image of content it can read in its own document, while a browser extension follows a separate permission model.
What a normal website can and cannot capture
There are three different things people call a “screenshot.” Treating them as the same creates most of the confusion.

Whole-screen, window, or tab capture
navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia() returns a video stream only after the browser’s sharing flow. The user chooses the surface in the browser picker. The page receives the selected stream, not an unrestricted ability to inspect every display.
A page-made image is not a desktop screenshot
A page can draw its own readable HTML into a canvas or generate a screenshot-like image. That can include the page’s layout and data it is permitted to read, but it cannot reveal another application, another browser window, or the rest of your monitor. Cross-origin frames and images can also prevent pixels from being read unless the relevant web security requirements are met.

Extensions are a separate case
An extension with the right host permission can call tabs.captureVisibleTab() and capture the visible portion of the active tab. Review extensions separately from website permissions: an extension can have capabilities that the page itself does not.
Can a website start screen sharing without you knowing?
For ordinary web pages, the answer is no under the standard Screen Capture API. The browser requires a user gesture and an explicit source-selection prompt. Display-capture permission is not persistent for reuse: a new request requires fresh authorization.
The exact wording and location of controls vary by browser and operating system, but the decision is visible. A page can ask you to click a button, disguise that button’s purpose, or pressure you to approve quickly; it cannot remove the browser’s selection step through normal page JavaScript.
What “user gesture” means
The request normally has to follow an action such as clicking a “Share screen” control. A timer, background task, or page load is not a substitute for that interaction. If a site’s sharing request is unexpected, cancel it rather than approving it.

The go-ahead for getDisplayMedia() cannot be persisted for silent reuse. Even if you approved sharing earlier, a later capture request requires another prompt. This is different from some ordinary camera, microphone, or notification permission experiences.

What happens after you approve?
- The browser opens a picker. You select a browser tab, a particular window, or an entire monitor. The website does not get to choose an arbitrary surface for you.
- The page receives a MediaStream. The stream contains the selected surface’s video. The page may display it, record it with browser media APIs, or transmit it to a server if its application is built to do so.
- The browser shows an active-sharing indicator. While display capture is in effect, browsers provide some form of indicator so you know sharing is active. Its appearance and position differ by browser and operating system.
- You can stop the stream. Use the browser’s sharing indicator or toolbar control. A site can also stop its own tracks, but you should still verify that the browser indicates sharing has ended.
Screen capture is therefore a disclosure decision, not a hidden background capability. Read the selected surface carefully: sharing a monitor can expose other applications and notifications, while sharing a tab limits the disclosure to that tab.
Can an exam or meeting site see your other tabs?
Only if you explicitly share a surface that contains them. If you select one browser tab, the captured video is that tab. If you select a window, it is that window. If you select an entire monitor, anything visible on that monitor—including other windows, notifications, and tab content—may appear in the stream.
A page that has not been granted display capture cannot inspect your other tabs through ordinary JavaScript. It may still collect information available within its own page, such as what you type into its fields or the links and controls you use. That is separate from seeing pixels in another tab.
Why proctoring and meeting apps seem more capable
These applications combine normal page data with optional permissions, an installed desktop app, or a browser extension. A proctoring extension may capture the active tab under its extension permissions; a managed computer may also enforce administrator policies. Ask which component is requesting access and what surface you are being asked to share.
How to tell whether screen sharing is active
- Look for the browser’s screen-sharing indicator or toolbar message.
- Open the browser’s sharing controls to see the selected tab, window, or monitor.
- Stop sharing from that indicator when the meeting or exam ends; do not rely only on closing a page.
- Watch for a capture-related icon or status change in the operating system’s menu bar or task area.
- If you never approved a picker but suspect capture, check installed extensions and their site permissions.
Indicators are intentionally browser- and operating-system-specific, so their color, icon, and position are not universal. The important signal is that an active-sharing state is exposed somewhere in the browser or system UI.

How to protect your privacy before approving a prompt
- Verify the requester. Confirm that the page and task genuinely need display capture. A normal article, form, or payment page should not need your desktop.
- Choose the narrowest surface. Share a single tab rather than a window or monitor whenever that is sufficient.
- Hide sensitive content first. Close private documents, messaging windows, password managers, and notification previews that could appear on a shared window or monitor.
- Read the picker label. Check whether you selected a tab, window, or full screen before clicking Share.
- Stop promptly. Use the browser sharing indicator or toolbar as soon as the task is complete.
- Audit extensions. Remove extensions you do not recognize and review which sites have
activeTabor broadall_urlsaccess. - Consider device management. On a company or school computer, administrators can use browser policy to allow or block screen-video capture prompts.
Common situations and the correct interpretation
“The site made a screenshot as soon as I opened it.”
It may have rendered an image of its own DOM or used a server-side screenshot of a URL. That does not demonstrate access to your desktop. A true display capture would involve the browser’s sharing flow.
“I clicked Share, but the site saw my whole computer.”
Check what you selected. A monitor or a window containing multiple applications can expose everything visible there. Stop sharing, then start again with the specific tab if possible.
“The page keeps asking for screen access.”
Each request requires fresh authorization. Decline unexpected prompts, close the page, and investigate extensions or installed software if the requests continue.
“A browser extension captured a tab without a website prompt.”
Extensions use their own permission system. Review the extension’s listing, installed permissions, and browser settings. A granted activeTab or all_urls permission can enable visible-tab capture without the page using getDisplayMedia().

No picker appears
Confirm that the request follows a click and that the page is allowed to run in its current context. A blocked prompt, browser policy, insecure embedding context, or an already-ended stream can prevent the picker. Try the browser’s site-permission controls and repeat the action deliberately.
The wrong content is visible
You probably selected a different surface than intended. Stop sharing and choose the exact tab or window. A full monitor includes anything displayed there.

The user, browser, operating system, or selected window can end capture. Check the sharing indicator, reselect a surface if appropriate, and avoid closing or minimizing a selected window when the application requires it to remain visible.

An extension cannot capture the tab
Check whether it has activeTab or all_urls, whether the current page is restricted by the browser, and whether the extension is enabled. Remove broad permissions from extensions that do not need them.
Bottom line for privacy
A website cannot secretly record your entire screen through standard web-page JavaScript. Whole-screen, window, and tab capture require your interaction, a source choice, and visible browser or system feedback. The exceptions are voluntary disclosure, extensions with their own permissions, installed software, and administrator-controlled devices. When you only need an image of a URL, use a URL screenshot workflow such as ScreenshotNeo instead of sharing your desktop.

Does denying a screen-share prompt alert the website?
The page can detect that its capture request was denied or cancelled, but it does not receive the pixels from your screen.

Can private or incognito mode prevent screen capture?
Private browsing does not make an approved display share safe by itself. The browser still follows its capture permissions, so select the narrowest surface and stop sharing when finished.
Can a website capture my webcam and screen at the same time?
They are separate permission-controlled media sources. Approving one does not automatically grant the other; review each prompt and the selected device or surface.
