A web clipper such as Obsidian Web Clipper or Notion Web Clipper is documented as a tool you invoke on the page you are viewing, not as a service that revisits and saves pages on a recurring schedule. Obsidian can select a template automatically based on page details, but that is different from scheduling a future capture. For recurring saves, use a separate scheduled-capture tool or browser automation, and check whether it requires the browser to remain open.
What “automatic” means for a web clipper
People use “automatic” to mean several different things. A clipper might choose a template without prompting, save after you invoke its extension, or revisit a page and save it repeatedly without you being there. Only the last is scheduled capture.

- Automatic template selection: The clipper chooses how to format a page based on its URL or page metadata.
- One-action clipping: You open or invoke the extension and save the current page.
- Recurring scheduled capture: Software visits a page at chosen times and saves each capture without a person starting the run.
Check which behavior a product documents before relying on it to archive changing material such as a dashboard, report, or news page.

What Obsidian and Notion document
Obsidian Web Clipper
Obsidian’s capture documentation says: “When you open the extension, Web Clipper extracts data from the current web page following the settings in your template.” That describes a user-invoked capture of the current page, not a recurring visit. See Obsidian’s capture documentation.
#1 Best Overall
Obsidian templates can be selected automatically using the current page’s URL or schema.org data. That helps choose the right template during a clipping workflow; the template documentation does not describe this as a scheduler that revisits pages or saves them later.
Notion Web Clipper
Notion’s help page describes saving a web page into a workspace through its browser extension. The reviewed documentation does not describe unattended scheduled capture. That is a statement about what the help page documents, not a claim that no integration or future feature could provide scheduling. See Notion’s Web Clipper help.
Use a separate browser extension for recurring captures
Auto Page Capture is a separate Manifest V3 extension for Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Its project documentation describes multiple independent schedules, with one-time, interval-based, weekly, and monthly options. It can save captures as MHTML, HTML, PDF, or a full-page image, and supports optional actions before saving. These are the project’s own documented capabilities, not an independent reliability test. See the Auto Page Capture documentation.
The browser-open limitation matters
Auto Page Capture says scheduled captures run only while the browser is running. If the browser is fully closed at the scheduled time, that run is skipped. When the browser starts again, it resumes from the next upcoming schedule rather than replaying missed runs. This makes the extension a poor fit if you need a guaranteed archive run while your computer or browser is offline.
Choose the output for the job
- MHTML or HTML: useful when you want a page-oriented file, but check how it handles dynamic content and external resources.
- PDF: useful for a document-like snapshot intended to read or share.
- Full-page image: useful when visual appearance is the record you need.
Those formats are not interchangeable: extracted text, source-oriented files, rendered images, and PDFs preserve different aspects of a page. Verify that the format retains the information you actually need.
When browser automation may be a better fit
Browser automation can schedule a workflow, but a recurring shortcut is not automatically a dependable web archive. Claude in Chrome’s help documents recurring schedules for shortcuts; it does not establish that every shortcut opens the intended page, waits for it to finish, and saves a valid archive. See Claude’s Chrome help.
Before depending on an automation workflow, confirm that it can:
- open the exact target URL and handle redirects;
- wait for client-rendered or otherwise delayed content to appear;
- perform any required clicks or other interactions;
- use the correct login session and permissions;
- save to the intended destination in the needed format; and
- report failures and explain what happens to missed runs.
How to decide which approach fits
| Approach | What it automates | Browser requirement and missed runs | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Obsidian or Notion web clipper | A user-invoked save of the current page; Obsidian can also select a template from page characteristics. | The reviewed clipper documentation describes an extension workflow, not scheduled runs. | Saving a page when you choose to clip it. |
| Auto Page Capture | Recurring or one-time page capture in a separate Chrome or Edge extension. | Browser must be running; a run missed while it is closed is skipped rather than replayed. | Recurring saves when keeping the browser open is acceptable. |
| Browser automation | A scheduled browser workflow, depending on the automation and shortcut you configure. | Requirements and missed-run handling depend on the chosen workflow; verify them directly. | Pages that need browser interactions, provided the workflow reliably saves the intended result. |
If your requirement is “save this page every week even when my computer is off,” the documented browser-open constraint rules out Auto Page Capture for that requirement. If a person can leave the browser running and skipped captures are acceptable, its documented schedules may be suitable. For a clipper extension, assume capture is user-invoked unless its documentation explicitly says it revisits pages on a schedule.

Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot rather than a web clipper’s saved page, ScreenshotNeo is an API and MCP server for website captures. A GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Example using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for free: 1,000 screenshots a month, no card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Obsidian Web Clipper’s automatic template selection save pages on a timer?
No. It selects a template from page details during the clipping workflow; that is not a recurring schedule.
Will Auto Page Capture run a scheduled capture if Chrome or Edge is closed?
No. Its documentation says the browser must be running, and captures missed while it is closed are skipped.
Can I schedule screenshots with ScreenshotNeo?
The ScreenshotNeo facts provided describe API and MCP captures, but do not establish a built-in recurring scheduler. A separate scheduler would be needed to call the API at set times.
