Navies are developing autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), larger unmanned submarines and networked sensor systems that could make surveillance more persistent and harder to counter. But no cited public source demonstrates that a named robot submarine reliably evades advanced sonar, and none publishes a comparable detection range or acoustic signature for these vehicles.
What “outwit sonar” would actually mean
“Robot submarine” is a loose label for several kinds of unmanned underwater vehicle. An AUV can navigate underwater without continuous remote control; a large-displacement unmanned underwater vehicle (LDUUV) is a larger class intended to carry substantial payloads or conduct longer missions. Unmanned surface vessels are different platforms, though they may be part of the same surveillance network.

Outwitting sonar could mean avoiding detection, preventing a contact from being classified, or making it difficult to maintain a track. Those are distinct outcomes. A vehicle could be detected without being identified, or a sensor could identify an object without continuously tracking it. Public program announcements and exercise reports rarely provide the controlled results needed to establish any of these outcomes against a particular sonar system.

Can sonar detect underwater drones?
Sonar is not one sensor with one performance level. Systems may transmit sound and analyze returning echoes, or listen for sound already present. The result depends on the sensor mode, frequency, geometry, environment and target. The public sources discussed here do not give platform-specific detection ranges or acoustic signatures for the named underwater vehicles.

A 2023 NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) report examines side-scan sonar and synthetic-aperture sonar (SAS) used by AUVs for seafloor mapping in mine-countermeasure work. These systems can create detailed images, but the report says detection and classification degrade in complex seabed environments, particularly when objects are buried or partly buried. It also notes that commercial short-range, high-resolution multibeam imaging sonar can provide sub-centimetre resolution in some configurations. That is a conditional imaging-resolution figure—not a submarine detection range, and not evidence that an underwater drone can or cannot evade sonar.
CMRE describes ultra-wideband SAS, low-frequency approaches and AI-based target recognition as areas under investigation. These approaches address sensing and classification challenges; the report does not suggest that AI makes detection certain. Its findings concern naval mine-warfare research and should not be generalized to every submarine-detection scenario.

How autonomy could change the contest
Autonomy can let multiple platforms cover an area, operate for longer periods or share sensing tasks. NATO CMRE’s 2023 report describes heterogeneous autonomous assets with active or passive sensor packages detecting and localizing targets. NATO Allied Command Transformation’s 2025 description of Task Force X adds a networked concept: integrating uncrewed systems with existing forces and combining their data.

But distribution is not invisibility. The public descriptions do not show that autonomy changes a vehicle’s acoustic signature, defeats a particular sonar, or guarantees uninterrupted coverage.

Communications are another part of the system. In October 2024, the U.S. Department of Defense reported tests of software-defined acoustic modems alongside autonomous underwater and surface vessels during the three-week Autonomous Warrior 24 maritime experimentation in Australia. The test is evidence of experimentation and interoperability work, not proof of combat readiness; the report does not establish specific communication ranges or latency.

| Program or system | Publicly described purpose | Evidence and status qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Navy/DIU LDUUV effort | Long-endurance underwater sensing and payload delivery for undersea and seabed warfare missions. | On 8 February 2024, the Defense Innovation Unit announced prototype agreements with Oceaneering International, Kongsberg Discovery and Anduril Industries, with live demonstrations beginning in 2024. Prototype selection is not proof of routine operational service. |
| DARPA ACTUV | An unmanned vessel concept using non-conventional sensors to track quiet diesel-electric submarines. | DARPA describes the program as complete. Its goals included long-range, months-long missions under sparse remote supervision, safe navigation and continuous tracking; the page does not establish persistent operational tracking as a current capability. |
| NATO Task Force X | Persistent maritime surveillance, threat tracking and improved awareness, initially focused on the Baltic. | NATO Allied Command Transformation’s 31 January 2025 article outlined the initiative and a planned mid-February test. Those announced plans should not be treated as confirmed outcomes without a later status report. |
| AUKUS Autonomous Warrior 24 | Experimentation with autonomous and networked maritime systems, including underwater and surface vessels and acoustic modems. | The U.S. Department of Defense reported successful testing in October 2024. An exercise test does not establish that every platform is operational. |
| Orca XLUUV | An extra-large unmanned underwater vehicle program. | In December 2024, the Navy said delivery of XLE-1 was expected in early 2025, with follow-on testing through the third quarter of fiscal year 2025. Those were then-expected milestones; the cited announcement does not confirm their completion. |
| AN/AQS-20 mine-countermeasure system | Mine hunting and identification in an unmanned mine-countermeasure package. | NAVSEA describes forward-looking, side-looking synthetic-aperture and digital gap-fill sonar. It is an example of unmanned systems using sonar for a defined mission—not evidence that robot submarines defeat anti-submarine sonar. |
Across these examples, mission, platform and evidence maturity differ. A research report, a prototype agreement, a completed technology program, a planned test and a reported exercise are not interchangeable proof of operational performance.

What is an extra-large unmanned underwater vehicle?
An XLUUV is an extra-large unmanned underwater vehicle; LDUUV is another term used for a large-displacement class. In the Navy/DIU effort, the stated roles include long-endurance sensing and payload delivery in undersea and seabed warfare. Those mission descriptions explain why navies are investing in larger unmanned craft, but they do not establish a specific endurance figure, sensor performance or stealth advantage for the selected prototypes.
Orca is a separate XLUUV program. The Navy’s December 2024 update gave expected delivery and testing milestones for XLE-1, not a confirmed later operational status. A reader should therefore distinguish the program’s intended vehicle class from a verified fielded capability.
Why the “arms race” claim needs a qualification
The defensible version of the arms-race story is a contest between more distributed autonomous sensing and efforts to detect, classify and track objects in difficult underwater conditions. A larger number of platforms may broaden coverage or reduce the need to expose crews to risk. Sensor developers, in turn, are working on better imaging, recognition and integration. The sources show investment, research and testing—not a settled advantage for either side.
They do not disclose acoustic signatures, platform-specific sonar detection ranges, classified capabilities or a controlled comparison between named unmanned vehicles and named next-generation sonar. Without those details, ranking vehicles by stealth, survivability or ability to “beat” sonar would be speculation. The strongest current conclusion is narrower: underwater autonomy is expanding as a surveillance and payload-delivery concept, while sonar performance remains dependent on the sensor, target and environment.
