The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) recommends an opaque, waterproof cover with vent openings for tires stored outside. For a vehicle sitting on its tires, proper inflation, a suitable parking surface and periodic movement matter too.
When a tire cover can help
USTMA recommends covering tires that must be stored outdoors with an opaque, waterproof cover that has vent openings. The vents help avoid trapping heat and creating a “heat-box or steam-bath effect.” The guidance is for outdoor tire storage; it does not establish that a cover prevents cracking on a vehicle driven normally or reverses cracks that have already formed. Choosing a cover
Look for a cover that fits the tire or vehicle, is opaque and weather-resistant, and has vent openings. These criteria follow USTMA’s storage recommendations; they are not a product test or evidence that one brand lasts longer than another. No measured reduction in cracking or added service life is established by the guidance.

How to store a vehicle that will sit
If tires remain mounted on a parked vehicle, a cover is only one part of storage care. USTMA recommends maintaining the manufacturer-recommended tire pressure, including in the spare, parking on a firm, reasonably level, well-drained and clean surface, and moving the vehicle every three months so the area of the tire in contact with the ground changes. A pressure gauge can help check inflation; it does not prevent rubber aging.

Clean tires without hastening damage
Use soap and water with a soft-bristle brush or shop cloth. USTMA warns that incompatible tire dressings and harsh cleaning agents can speed oxidation and premature cracking, and says not to use petroleum-based products as tire dressings or cleaners. A shiny finish is not evidence of protection: choose cleaning methods that do not introduce those risks. USTMA’s tire-care guidance covers cleaning and care.
What to do about cracks or other damage
A cover does not make a damaged tire safe to drive on. Tire service life varies with use and conditions, so calendar age alone cannot accurately establish whether a tire is serviceable. Follow the tire maker’s service-life recommendations and have a tire professional assess visible or tactile damage or abnormal changes.

Checking the tire’s age
For tires made in 2000 or later, the last four digits of the DOT Tire Identification Number show the week and year of manufacture. This helps identify when a tire was made; it does not by itself determine whether the tire is safe. See USTMA’s Tire Facts for the age-code explanation.
