Its API can generate images that you feed into a separate comparison and alerting workflow, but the reviewed official documentation does not describe built-in schedules, visual diffs, or change alerts.
Can Thumbalizr monitor website changes?
Not by itself, based on the features documented on Thumbalizr’s homepage and API documentation. Those pages describe screenshot generation, request options, and response statuses; they do not establish that Thumbalizr periodically revisits a URL, compares captures, or sends alerts when a page changes.

You can use its screenshots as inputs to a monitoring system you build or operate separately. That system would need to schedule captures, retain prior images, align comparable captures, calculate or review differences, and deliver alerts. A new screenshot request is not the same as a scheduled check: Thumbalizr’s API documentation says paid tiers can use a changed timestamp value to request a refreshed image, while the Free tier does not support that refresh parameter.

- Create an account. Thumbalizr says signup and basic API-key registration are free, and no credit card is required for a free account. Start at the Thumbalizr homepage.
- Get the credentials. Retrieve your API key and secret from the member section, as described in the API documentation.
- Build a signed Embed API request. The documented request uses an API key, a token, and query parameters including the target URL and capture mode. The token is an MD5 digest of the query string followed by the secret. URL-encode the target URL and other parameters as required by the vendor’s examples.
- Keep the secret private. Generate signed requests on a server you control where practical; do not expose the secret in public client-side code.
- Choose capture parameters. Set only the options needed, such as thumbnail width, image format, JPEG quality, screen or page sizing, delay, browser dimensions, and country. Plan restrictions apply; see the table below.
- Check the response. The API documentation identifies
QUEUED,OK, andFAILEDscreenshot statuses and describes generated-time and error headers. Handle queued work as unfinished rather than treating it as a completed image.
Thumbalizr documents libraries and integrations for Python/Django, Ruby/Rails, PHP, Perl, and Template Toolkit. Its libraries include functions for generating a request URL, downloading an image, and waiting for a screenshot to become ready; see Thumbalizr plugins and libraries.

What Thumbalizr’s documented plan limits mean
The API documentation’s plan table lists these capture settings. The vendor says the API’s country parameter supports US or Germany and advises contacting Thumbalizr about other locations.

The Thumbalizr demo further describes Free as watermarked, screen-sized, and fixed at a 1280×1024 browser; Silver as unwatermarked and supporting screen or full-page capture at 1280×1024; and Gold and Platinum as supporting larger browser dimensions, configurable delay, and US or European browsers. Check the live plan details before relying on a feature for a production workflow.

Does Thumbalizr take full-page screenshots, and can you choose browser size or country?
Full-page capture is unavailable on Free in the API plan table; it is listed for Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Free and Silver use a fixed 1280×1024 browser viewport in the API table, while Gold and Platinum allow dimension ranges. For country, the documentation supports US or Germany and says to contact Thumbalizr for other locations. These controls can help make captures more comparable, but they do not provide change detection or alert delivery.
How to turn screenshots into a separate monitoring workflow

- Schedule captures externally. Choose an interval and trigger requests using your scheduler or application. Do not interpret the API’s timestamp refresh option as a recurring schedule.
- Keep capture conditions consistent. Use the same URL, viewport dimensions, country, capture mode, and delay for each comparison. Changing these can create visual differences unrelated to a site update.
- Store each successful image with metadata. Record the capture time and request settings alongside the file so you can explain why two screenshots differ.
- Compare only completed captures. Treat
QUEUEDas pending and handleFAILEDusing the API’s error information; do not compare an incomplete or failed result with a prior image. - Choose a difference method and alert policy. Your separate system needs to decide whether to compare pixels, regions, or another representation, how to suppress insignificant changes, and where to send alerts. For stable comparisons, decide how your workflow handles dynamic content such as timestamps, rotating banners, animations, and personalized page elements. A changed capture may reflect those variations rather than a meaningful site change. The reviewed Thumbalizr pages do not establish guarantees about uptime, capture latency, retention, certifications, or service-level agreements, so do not assume those properties when designing a monitoring dependency.
