The Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra is built for laptop-like use, with a 14.6-inch display, Samsung DeX and compatible keyboard options. It could cover common work and school tasks such as email, web research, video calls, documents and note-taking. It is not a safe universal laptop replacement: specialized software, required desktop features or institution-specific tools may still call for a laptop.
Timing matters: Samsung said US availability would begin October 7, 2026. As of October 3, 2026, that date had not arrived, and the sources available did not establish independent hands-on testing of the S12 Ultra.

What the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra can do like a laptop
Samsung presents the S12 Ultra as a productivity tablet, pairing its 14.6-inch display with DeX and keyboard options. DeX is a tablet feature; the materials reviewed do not indicate that separate DeX hardware is needed. Samsung describes this combination as delivering laptop-like productivity, but that is a manufacturer claim—not proof that it supports every desktop workflow.
Tom’s Guide’s October 1, 2026 general guidance on Samsung tablets says they can suit email, web work, video calls, note-taking, documents and light multitasking. That advice is useful for identifying plausible tasks, but it is not an S12 Ultra-specific test and it also flags Android app and DeX limitations.

Where it may work well for school
Notes, reading and research
Samsung says the S Pen is included. Its study-use material highlights note-taking, highlighting, sketching and working with multiple windows. Those features can make the tablet useful for reading course materials, annotating PDFs, taking handwritten notes and keeping a reference open beside notes.
Documents and online classes
Writing assignments, browsing course sites and joining video calls may work if the Android apps or web versions used by your school provide the functions you need. Samsung names Microsoft 365 and Adobe Photoshop among its software offerings, but that does not establish that their Android versions match the desktop features required for a particular class.
Exams and school-specific requirements
Before relying on the tablet as your only computer, check your institution’s exact requirements. Exam software, remote-proctoring tools, specialized course applications, file workflows or attached peripherals may require capabilities that a tablet setup does not provide. Samsung itself cautions that some specialized software may still require a laptop.

Where it may work well for a job—and where it may not
Good candidates for a tablet-first setup
If your routine is mainly email, browser-based work, video calls, documents and light multitasking, the S12 Ultra may be a practical primary device—provided the Android apps and web services you use have the necessary features. A keyboard and trackpad can make typing and pointing more familiar, while DeX is intended to support a more desktop-like working arrangement.
Workflows to verify before switching
Check every essential work application and feature, not just whether an app with the same name exists. Confirm compatibility with your organization’s security and sign-in requirements, file handling, external displays and peripherals, and any specialized creative, technical or business software. If your job depends on a desktop-only application or a feature missing from its Android counterpart, keep a laptop available.
What you need for a laptop-style setup
Samsung names the Pro Keyboard with trackpad and the Book Cover Keyboard Slim as keyboard options. The Pro Keyboard with trackpad is the more direct choice if you want both typing and pointer input. Confirm the exact accessory model’s compatibility, local stock and price before buying; availability and pricing can vary by market.

- SEARCHING MADE EASY: Quickly search for just about anything you see on your Tab — all without switching apps — using Circle to Search with Google.³
- MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT: Capture your lecture, meeting, or daily notes and let Note Assist⁴ with Galaxy AI² do the hard work of organizing and even summarizing them for you.

- PACKED WITH POWER: No matter what you take on or where you take your Galaxy Tab S10+, enjoy every experience with a powerful tablet processor.
The S Pen is included according to Samsung, so buying another pen is not an assumed requirement for note-taking. The right setup depends on your work: a keyboard may matter for long documents, while a trackpad may be useful for pointer-based tasks. Compare the cost of the tablet plus the keyboard you actually need, and any necessary software, with the laptop alternative. The sources available here do not establish final US pricing or a like-for-like price and weight comparison.

Battery life: a video figure is not a workday result
Samsung advertises up to 23 hours of video playback for the S12 Ultra. That is a manufacturer playback claim, not a measured productivity result or a guarantee of a full workday. No independent S12 Ultra productivity-battery result was established in the sources available for this article.
How to decide before making it your only computer
- List your must-have tasks. Include the specific work or school apps, functions, files, exam tools and peripherals you use—not just broad categories such as “documents.”
- Verify Android compatibility and features. Check the exact app version and whether it supports the functions your workflow requires. If possible, confirm requirements with your employer, school or software provider.
- Try the input and window workflow. Consider whether DeX, the keyboard and trackpad, and the way you manage files and multiple windows suit your everyday work.
- Compare complete setups. Include the compatible keyboard and any software costs in the tablet total, then compare that with the laptop you would otherwise use.
- Keep a fallback if a requirement is uncertain. Until your essential tasks are confirmed to work, do not assume the tablet can replace a required laptop.
Availability and evidence
Samsung’s US product page listed availability beginning October 7, 2026. The tablet had not reached that date as of October 3, 2026, so the available evidence supports a feature-based assessment, not a post-launch verdict. Samsung’s product and study materials establish the features and claims described above; Tom’s Guide provides general Samsung-tablet guidance, not a hands-on S12 Ultra review.
