Yes, the iPhone XR can run some phone-based VR games—but only when the app explicitly supports iOS VR, such as Google Cardboard mode, and you use a compatible viewer. A viewer holds the phone behind lenses; it does not turn an ordinary iPhone game into a VR game.
Does iPhone XR support VR?
The XR has a three-axis gyroscope and an accelerometer, sensors used for phone-based head tracking. Apple lists its display as 6.1 inches and the phone’s dimensions as 150.9 × 75.7 × 8.3 mm. Those specifications make basic phone VR possible, but they do not guarantee that every VR app or headset will work.

Google Cardboard Help describes using a phone with a viewer to view pictures, play games and experience VR. Google lists iOS 8.0 as the minimum software requirement for Cardboard use, while also advising users to check whether their specific phone is compatible with their viewer. Why a viewer does not make every game VR
A Cardboard-style viewer is a passive holder with lenses. For a game to work in it, the app must render a stereoscopic view—one image for each eye—and support head tracking and some way to interact. Google’s developer guide describes these functions, including viewer-button interaction. A standard iPhone game that only displays a normal flat screen will remain a flat-screen game in the viewer.

Google’s developer setup guide lists iOS 12 or later, a Cardboard viewer, Xcode 12.5 or later and CocoaPods 1.9 or later. Those are requirements for developers following that guide, not a universal minimum for all Cardboard games. Google Cardboard iOS developer guide
What VR headset works with iPhone XR?
Look for a smartphone VR viewer whose manufacturer explicitly lists compatibility with a phone matching the XR’s dimensions. Check the viewer’s phone-retention design and whether it can accommodate your protective case; screen size alone does not establish physical fit. Google likewise advises checking the specific viewer’s compatibility information.

- Check whether the fit guidance assumes the phone is used without a case.
- Look for viewer profile or QR-code setup instructions, if provided; Google’s Cardboard setup uses a QR code to pair a viewer.
Google describes Cardboard as a way to try virtual reality from a phone. A compatible viewer is suitable for basic phone VR, but it should not be treated as equivalent to a dedicated standalone VR headset. How to check whether a VR game will work
- Check the app listing. Confirm that the app is currently available for iOS and explicitly supports phone VR or Cardboard. Check its current minimum iOS version and the developer’s instructions.
- Verify the viewer fit. Compare the manufacturer’s compatibility details with the XR’s dimensions, and account for any case you plan to leave on.
- Check tracking and controls. Make sure the app supports head tracking and offers an interaction method you can use, such as a viewer button or on-screen controls.
- Follow viewer setup. If the viewer supplies a profile or QR code, use its instructions to configure the app or viewer.
If the setup fails, phone-model compatibility by itself does not identify the cause. The app, viewer fit or setup, software requirements, or sensor support may be involved.

Is ARKit the same as VR support?
No. ARKit supports augmented-reality experiences that use the camera and motion features to place digital content in a view of the real world. Cardboard VR apps instead create stereoscopic views for looking through a viewer. An app’s ARKit support alone is not evidence that it is a VR game. Apple ARKit

The XR’s sensors and iOS support make it suitable for compatible, basic phone-based VR. Compatibility and experience depend on the individual app and viewer, and app availability or requirements can change.
