Can the iPhone 11 Wirelessly Charge? What to Know

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The iPhone 11 does support wireless charging, so you can place it on a compatible charging pad or stand instead of plugging in a Lightning cable. It uses the widely adopted Qi wireless charging standard, which means it works with many third-party chargers from brands like Anker, Belkin, Mophie, and others.

Wireless charging on the iPhone 11 is convenient, but it is not the same as MagSafe on newer iPhones. Charging speeds are typically slower than wired charging, alignment matters, and thick or metal cases can interfere with performance. Knowing the right charger type and setup can help you get the most reliable charging experience.

Does the iPhone 11 Support Wireless Charging?

Yes, the iPhone 11 supports wireless charging. Apple built wireless charging into the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max, so you can place the phone on a compatible charging pad or stand instead of plugging in a Lightning cable. The feature works through the glass back of the device, which allows power to transfer from the charger’s coil to the charging coil inside the iPhone.

The iPhone 11 uses the widely supported Qi wireless charging standard. That means it can charge on many third-party wireless chargers from brands such as Belkin, Anker, Mophie, Nomad, Spigen, and others, as long as the charger is Qi-certified or clearly supports Qi charging. You do not need an Apple-branded wireless charger for the iPhone 11, and you do not need any special setting turned on in iOS. In most cases, you simply connect the wireless charger to power, place the iPhone 11 centered on the charging surface, and look for the charging icon on the screen.

Wireless charging on the iPhone 11 is convenient, but it is not the same as the magnetic MagSafe charging system Apple introduced later with the iPhone 12 lineup. The iPhone 11 does not have the built-in MagSafe magnet ring, so it will not snap into perfect alignment on a MagSafe charger or charge at MagSafe speeds. If you place an iPhone 11 on Apple’s MagSafe Charger, it can still charge as a regular Qi wireless charger, but the magnetic attachment is weak or absent unless you use a special magnetic case or adapter, and charging is limited to standard Qi behavior.

For everyday use, wireless charging is best suited for desks, nightstands, and other places where you regularly set your phone down for longer periods. It is especially useful for overnight charging or topping up during work, since there is no cable to connect and disconnect. A wired Lightning charger is still usually the better option when you need the fastest charge in the shortest time, but wireless charging is fully supported on the iPhone 11 and remains a practical, cable-free way to keep the battery topped up.

What Wireless Charging Standard the iPhone 11 Uses

The iPhone 11 uses the Qi wireless charging standard, the same open wireless charging standard used by many iPhones, Android phones, earbuds, and other small electronics. Qi is developed by the Wireless Power Consortium and works through inductive charging: a coil inside the charging pad transfers power to a coil inside the iPhone when the two are aligned closely enough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For iPhone 11 owners, this means you do not need an Apple-only wireless charger. Any reputable Qi-certified charging pad, stand, or multi-device dock should be able to charge the phone. Common examples include chargers from brands such as Belkin, Anker, Mophie, Nomad, and many others. The charger may advertise support for 5W, 7.5W, 10W, 15W, or higher wireless output, but the iPhone 11 will only draw the amount of power it is designed to accept.

Qi compatibility on the iPhone 11

The iPhone 11 supports standard Qi wireless charging rather than Apple’s later magnetic MagSafe system. It can sit on a flat Qi pad or rest upright on a Qi charging stand, as long as the charging coil in the phone lines up with the coil in the charger. If the position is too far off-center, charging may start and stop, charge slowly, or fail to begin at all.

  • Standard used: Qi wireless charging
  • Maximum Apple-supported wireless speed: up to 7.5W with compatible Qi chargers
  • Connector still available: Lightning port for wired charging
  • Magnetic alignment: not built in, unlike MagSafe iPhones
  • Charger requirement: Qi-compatible or Qi-certified wireless charger

Qi certification is worth paying attention to because it indicates the charger has been tested for interoperability and safety features such as foreign object detection and temperature control. A very cheap, uncertified pad may still work, but it is more likely to have alignment problems, inconsistent output, excess heat, or poor long-term reliability. Since wireless charging naturally creates more heat than wired charging, using a well-made charger helps keep charging more stable.

The iPhone 11’s Qi support also means it can work with many public wireless charging surfaces, such as those built into desks, cars, hotel rooms, airports, and cafes. In a car, a Qi charging tray can be convenient, but the phone may shift while driving, especially if the tray is flat or slippery. If the charger is built into a mount, make sure it is designed for Qi charging and can hold the iPhone 11 in the correct position over the charging coil.

Amazon Basics Wireless Charger, 15W Qi Certified Wireless Charging Pad with USB Cable, Compatible with iPhone 15/14/13/12/11/X, Samsung & LG, Case Compatible, Black
  • HIGH-SPEED DYNAMIC CHARGING: Enjoy fast and efficient charging with optimized chipsets that deliver 15W for LG, 10W for Samsung, and 7.5W for iPhones using compatible 15W wireless chargers
  • SLEEP-FRIENDLY LED INDICATOR: The wireless charging mat uses LED lights to quietly indicate charge status, without disturbing your sleep with notifications
  • CASE FRIENDLY DESIGN: This wireless phone charger pad lets you conveniently charge without removing cases; power is transmitted through rubber, plastic, or TPU cases under 5mm thick. For faster charging with iPhone remove all cases before charging. Avoid charging with magnetic and metal cases or credit cards on; these cases will prevent operation
  • SAFE TO USE TECHNOLOGY: Qi-certified phone charging pad with protection safeguards against over-temperature, over-voltage, and over-current issues for a secure charging experience
  • COMPATIBLE WITH MULTIPLE DEVICES: The charger works with iPhone 15/14/13/12/11/X along with various Samsung and LG models. Note- AC adapter is not included

Although some newer wireless chargers advertise higher wattages, those ratings are often aimed at Android devices or MagSafe/Qi2 devices. With the iPhone 11, the practical standard to look for is simple: Qi support with 7.5W iPhone charging. A higher-wattage charger will not damage the phone when properly designed, but it will not make the iPhone 11 charge at 15W wirelessly. The phone and charger negotiate the power level, and the iPhone 11 remains limited by its own Qi charging capabilities.

How Fast the iPhone 11 Charges Wirelessly

The iPhone 11 can charge wirelessly at up to 7.5 watts when used with a compatible Qi wireless charger that supports Apple’s 7.5W charging profile. That is the practical maximum for standard wireless charging on the iPhone 11, even if the charging pad itself is advertised as 10W, 15W, or higher. In other words, a high-wattage Qi charger will not make the iPhone 11 charge at MagSafe-like speeds.

In many real-world situations, wireless charging may run below 7.5W. If the charger only supports basic Qi output for iPhones, the iPhone 11 may charge at around 5 watts. Heat, case thickness, coil alignment, battery level, and the power adapter connected to the charging pad can also affect charging speed. Wireless charging is usually fastest from a low battery percentage and slows down as the battery fills, especially past roughly 80%.

Charging method Typical maximum for iPhone 11 What to expect
Basic Qi wireless charger 5W Works, but charges more slowly
Qi charger with Apple 7.5W support 7.5W Best standard wireless speed for iPhone 11
MagSafe charger Up to 7.5W on iPhone 11 Charges as a Qi pad without magnetic alignment
Lightning fast charging About 18W or more with USB-C PD Much faster than wireless charging

For comparison, wired charging is significantly faster. With a USB-C Power Delivery charger and a USB-C to Lightning cable, the iPhone 11 can fast charge much more quickly than it can on a wireless pad. Apple has commonly described fast charging on supported iPhones as reaching about 50% in around 30 minutes with a suitable adapter, while wireless charging is better suited for gradual top-ups at a desk, bedside table, or kitchen counter.

To get the best wireless charging speed from an iPhone 11, use a reputable Qi-certified pad or stand that specifically lists 7.5W iPhone charging, pair it with the power adapter recommended by the charger manufacturer, and place the phone centered on the charging surface. If the phone becomes warm, iOS may temporarily slow or pause charging to protect the battery, so a well-ventilated charger and a thinner case can help maintain more consistent performance.

Best Wireless Chargers to Use With the iPhone 11

The best wireless chargers for the iPhone 11 are Qi-certified pads, stands, and multi-device chargers from reputable brands. Since the iPhone 11 uses standard Qi wireless charging rather than MagSafe, you do not need an Apple-specific magnetic charger. A well-made Qi charger rated for at least 7.5W will give the iPhone 11 its fastest supported wireless charging speed, provided you use a suitable wall adapter.

Qi charging pads

A flat Qi charging pad is the simplest option for an iPhone 11. You place the phone centered on the surface, and charging begins automatically. Pads are usually compact, inexpensive, and easy to use on a nightstand or desk. Look for models with a non-slip surface and a clear charging indicator light that is not too bright for bedside use. Brands such as Belkin, Anker, Mophie, Spigen, and Native Union commonly offer reliable Qi-certified pads that work well with the iPhone 11.

Wireless charging stands

A stand is often more convenient if you want to see the screen while charging. It holds the iPhone 11 upright, making it easier to check notifications, use Face ID, watch video, or keep the phone on a desk during the workday. A good stand should support both portrait and landscape placement and have charging coils positioned so the iPhone 11 connects reliably without careful adjustment every time. Stands are especially useful because the iPhone 11 does not magnetically snap into place the way newer MagSafe iPhones do.

  • For a bedside table: choose a low-profile Qi pad or a dimly lit stand that will not brighten the room.
  • For a desk: choose an angled stand so the display remains visible while the phone charges.
  • For travel: choose a slim Qi pad with a detachable USB-C or Micro-USB cable.
  • For multiple devices: choose a Qi charging station that can charge the iPhone, AirPods with a wireless charging case, and an Apple Watch.

Multi-device wireless chargers

If you own AirPods or an Apple Watch, a multi-device charger can reduce cable clutter. For the iPhone 11, make sure the phone charging area is listed as Qi-compatible and supports 7.5W charging for iPhones. Be aware that Apple Watch charging uses a different charging method, so a station must include a dedicated Apple Watch charging puck or holder. Some premium stations include everything built in, while others require you to insert your original Apple Watch cable.

Charger type Best for What to check
Qi pad Simple overnight charging Qi certification and 7.5W iPhone support
Qi stand Desk use and easy screen viewing Dual-coil design and stable phone placement
Multi-device station Charging iPhone, AirPods, and Apple Watch together Separate Apple Watch support and enough power input

Also pay attention to the power adapter included with the charger. Many wireless chargers ship without a wall plug, and using an old 5W USB adapter can limit performance. For best results with the iPhone 11, use the adapter recommended by the charger manufacturer, often an 18W or higher USB-C Power Delivery adapter or a Quick Charge adapter for older Qi accessories. Even with the right charger, wireless charging is still less efficient than a cable, so it is best for convenient top-ups or overnight charging rather than the fastest possible refill.

Why MagSafe Is Different From iPhone 11 Wireless Charging

MagSafe and the iPhone 11’s wireless charging both use Qi-based inductive charging, but they are not the same experience. The iPhone 11 can charge on a standard Qi wireless charger, including many flat pads and angled stands, but it does not have the built-in magnetic ring that Apple added starting with the iPhone 12 lineup. That magnetic ring is what lets MagSafe chargers snap into place and stay precisely aligned on newer iPhones.

On the iPhone 11, wireless charging depends entirely on placing the back of the phone over the charger’s coil. If the phone is slightly off-center, charging may slow down, pause, or fail to start. A MagSafe charger can still provide power to an iPhone 11 because it also works as a Qi charger, but it will not magnetically attach in the intended way unless you use a special magnetic case or adapter ring. Even then, the phone is still limited by the iPhone 11’s standard Qi charging behavior.

MagSafe advantages newer iPhones have

  • Magnetic alignment: MagSafe helps the charging coil line up correctly every time, reducing the chance of waking up to a phone that barely charged.
  • Higher Apple-supported wireless speeds: Compatible MagSafe iPhones can charge at up to 15W with an official MagSafe charger and a suitable USB-C power adapter. The iPhone 11 tops out at up to 7.5W on supported Qi chargers.
  • Accessory attachment: MagSafe supports wallets, battery packs, car mounts, stands, and grips that attach magnetically. The iPhone 11 does not natively support these accessories.
  • More secure placement: A MagSafe iPhone is less likely to slide off a compatible charger or shift out of position from a small bump.

The speed difference is one of the biggest practical distinctions. An iPhone 11 placed on Apple’s MagSafe Charger will charge as a regular Qi device, not as a full MagSafe device. In most cases, that means you should expect the same general wireless charging speeds you would get from a good Qi charger, with Apple’s 7.5W wireless charging limit for compatible setups. It will not unlock 15W MagSafe charging just because the charger itself supports it.

This also affects buying decisions. If you have an iPhone 11, there is usually no need to pay extra for a MagSafe charger unless you plan to upgrade to a MagSafe-compatible iPhone later or you like the design of a particular charger. For everyday use, a reputable Qi charger rated for at least 7.5W iPhone charging is enough. If you do buy a MagSafe-style stand or puck, check whether it can charge non-MagSafe Qi phones properly, and remember that magnetic features may be weak or unavailable without a compatible case.

Tips for Getting Reliable Wireless Charging on iPhone 11

Wireless charging on the iPhone 11 is convenient, but it depends on good alignment, the right accessories, and stable power delivery. The iPhone 11 charges using Qi wireless charging, so it does not magnetically snap into place like MagSafe iPhones. A small shift on the pad can slow charging or stop it entirely, especially on flat chargers where there is no physical guide to center the phone over the charging coil.

Place the iPhone carefully on the charger

For the best results, center the back of the iPhone 11 on the charging pad or stand. The wireless charging coil is located around the middle of the phone’s back, so placing the phone too high, too low, or off to one side can break the connection. If you use a stand charger, make sure the iPhone sits securely against the charging surface and that the stand is designed to support phones in both portrait and landscape orientation if you use it sideways.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Look for the charging indicator: The battery icon should show charging, and the phone may make a charging sound when first placed on the pad.
  • Wait a few seconds: Some Qi chargers take a moment to detect the phone and begin charging.
  • Avoid bumping the phone: Since there are no magnets to hold it in place, vibration from notifications or a slight nudge can move it off the coil.

Use the right case and remove obstructions

Most thin plastic, silicone, or leather cases work fine with Qi charging, but very thick cases can reduce reliability. Cases with metal plates, magnetic rings not designed for Qi, battery packs, pop-out grips, wallets, or credit cards between the iPhone and charger can interfere with charging. Metal accessories are especially problematic because they can heat up and prevent the charger from working properly.

If wireless charging starts and stops repeatedly, test the iPhone 11 without its case. If it charges normally, the case or an attached accessory is likely the issue. For everyday use, choose a case that specifically says it supports wireless charging. If you keep cards in a wallet case, remove them before charging to avoid interference and possible card damage.

Use a quality power adapter and cable

The charging pad is only part of the setup. Many Qi chargers need a capable wall adapter to reach their rated speed. For an iPhone 11, a Qi charger rated for 7.5W is ideal, but it should be paired with the adapter recommended by the charger manufacturer. Using an old 5W USB power brick may cause the pad to charge slowly, disconnect, or fail to power the charger properly.

  • Use certified or reputable Qi chargers: Brands that clearly list Qi support and iPhone compatibility are safer bets than unbranded pads.
  • Match the adapter to the charger: Some pads require USB-C Power Delivery or Quick Charge adapters for full performance.
  • Keep the pad on a flat surface: Uneven placement can make alignment less consistent.
  • Check for heat: Mild warmth is normal, but excessive heat can slow charging as the iPhone protects the battery.

For overnight charging, a stand or pad with a non-slip surface is usually more reliable than a slick glass or metal pad. If you need the fastest possible charge, use a wired Lightning charger instead, since wireless charging on the iPhone 11 is limited compared with wired fast charging and newer MagSafe models.

How many watts can the iPhone 11 charge at wirelessly?

The iPhone 11 can charge wirelessly at up to 7.5W when used with a compatible Qi charger. Some chargers advertise 10W, 15W, or higher, but the iPhone 11 will not use those higher wireless speeds. For faster charging, use a USB-C power adapter and Lightning cable instead.

Can I use a MagSafe charger with the iPhone 11?

You can place an iPhone 11 on an Apple MagSafe charger and it may charge as a regular Qi charger. However, the iPhone 11 does not have the magnetic alignment ring found in iPhone 12 and newer models. That means it will not snap into place reliably and will not get MagSafe charging speeds.

What kind of wireless charger should I buy for an iPhone 11?

Choose a Qi-certified charger from a reputable brand, ideally one that supports at least 7.5W iPhone charging. A stand is convenient for desks and nightstands, while a flat pad is simple and compact. Make sure the charger includes or is paired with a power adapter strong enough for its rated output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my iPhone 11 stop charging or charge slowly on a wireless pad?

Wireless charging depends on proper alignment between the phone and the charging coil. If charging is unreliable, remove thick cases, metal plates, PopSockets, or anything between the phone and charger. Also try repositioning the phone, using a better power adapter, and keeping the phone cool while it charges.

Bottom Line

Yes, the iPhone 11 supports wireless charging using the Qi standard, so it works with most Qi-certified charging pads and stands. Expect up to 7.5W wireless charging with compatible chargers, which is convenient for overnight or desk use but slower than wired charging.

For the best results, use a reputable Qi charger, remove thick or metal cases, and place the phone carefully on the coil. If you want magnetic alignment or faster MagSafe-style charging, you’ll need a newer iPhone model that supports MagSafe.
