Yes, with a display caveat. In Creative Bloq’s 2026 hands-on review, the 13-inch iPad Air M4 handled digital art, 3D sculpting and video editing, and reviewer Glen Southern viewed its 12GB of unified memory as useful headroom for demanding creative apps. The main reason to step up to an iPad Pro is not an established need for more speed in every art app; it is the Pro’s OLED screen and 120Hz refresh rate, versus the Air’s 60Hz IPS display.
What the artist-focused review shows—and what it doesn’t
Creative Bloq’s Glen Southern tested the 13-inch iPad Air M4 with workflows including large Procreate canvases, complex Nomad Sculpt or ZBrush sculpts, and other demanding creative applications. Southern, who says he has used iPad Pros professionally, considered the M4 and 12GB of unified memory meaningful headroom for 2D and 3D work. That is a reviewer’s assessment of creative capacity, not a controlled benchmark of every application or project.

Southern also reported that he could not perceive a Procreate performance difference from his older iPad models. That is a subjective observation about one app, not evidence that the M4 is no faster. The review does not provide controlled render times or app-by-app benchmark results. Read the Creative Bloq iPad Air M4 review.

Benchmarks are a separate measure
In its 2026 testing, TechRadar recorded Geekbench 6 scores of 3,745 single-core and 13,342 multi-core for its 13-inch M4 Air. Its tested M3 Air scored 3,023 and 11,716, respectively; its M2 Air scored 2,591 and 10,046. These are results from TechRadar’s benchmark runs, not measurements of canvas handling, sculpting, export time, or other artist-specific tasks. The publication also reported smooth photo and video editing, multitasking, and background video export in its use. See TechRadar’s iPad Air M4 review.

How the screen affects drawing and visual work
Apple specifies the 13-inch Air’s Liquid Retina display as a fully laminated, LED-backlit IPS Multi-Touch panel with 2732-by-2048 resolution, 264 pixels per inch, P3 wide color, True Tone, an antireflective coating, and 600 nits brightness. Apple lists support for Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), including Pencil hover. These specifications make the Air a capable drawing surface on paper; they do not establish measured color accuracy for professional proofing. Apple’s 13-inch iPad Air M4 technical specifications provide the model-specific details.
Creative Bloq’s tested Procreate guide describes the Air as having room for larger canvases and complex layer stacks, and calls Apple Pencil Pro precise and expressive. For artists comparing displays, the important compromise is refresh rate and panel type: the Air is 60Hz IPS, while iPad Pro models offer OLED and 120Hz ProMotion. A higher refresh rate can make Pencil motion appear smoother, and OLED offers a different contrast experience; whether that matters enough to pay more depends on the artist’s eyes, work, and budget. Choosing 11 inches or 13 inches
The 13-inch model offers more workspace for canvases, timelines, and multitasking; the 11-inch model is smaller and lighter to carry. TechRadar lists the product family at 460g for the 11-inch and 617g for the 13-inch models. Apple’s specifications cited here are for the 13-inch model, so check the exact regional specifications of the configuration you plan to buy.

Choose capacity around the size of your local project files and media library, particularly if you expect to keep video footage or large creative files on the tablet. Prices and configurations can vary by market and date; check current local listings rather than relying on an old starting price. Can it fit into a desk-based creative setup?
Apple lists a USB-C port supporting charging, DisplayPort, and USB 3 up to 10Gb/s. The 13-inch model supports native DisplayPort output and one external display at up to 6K resolution and 60Hz. That gives the Air a documented route to a larger monitor as well as portable use, but it does not guarantee compatibility with every hub, external drive, audio interface, or app. Check the requirements for the specific peripherals and software in your setup before buying around them.

| Question | iPad Air M4 | iPad Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Is the display the deciding factor? | 13-inch model has a 60Hz IPS display with P3 wide color and 600 nits brightness, per Apple’s specifications. | OLED and 120Hz ProMotion are the cited display advantages in the reviews. |
| Is there evidence of creative capability? | Creative Bloq’s reviewer judged the tested 13-inch model capable for digital art, 3D sculpting, and video editing. | The cited sources do not provide a comparable artist-workflow test establishing how much faster Pro is for these tasks. |
| What should shape the total cost? | Compare storage and include the Pencil and any keyboard you intend to buy. | Compare the full setup cost against the Air configuration and accessories, not tablet prices alone. |
Southern’s buying-guide opinion was that the Air is “overkill in most cases” for someone who is neither a professional creative nor a power user. It is a perspective from his tested Procreate guide, not a universal threshold for who should buy it. The guide’s comparisons and recommendation can help frame that decision.

A practical buying checklist for artists
- Choose the display size: prioritize 13 inches if working area is more important than bag size; choose 11 inches if portability is the stronger constraint.
- Choose storage for the files you keep: compare the available capacities against your projects and media rather than choosing by tablet price alone.
- Count the complete setup: include a compatible Pencil and any optional keyboard in the total cost.
- Consider Pro for a concrete screen reason: OLED contrast or 120Hz motion may justify the upgrade if those qualities materially affect your drawing or review work.
- Verify your peripherals: check the specific hub, storage, display, or audio device and app workflow before assuming USB-C support covers it.
