StoreDot is behind an early demonstration of a smartphone battery charging in under five minutes—but that was a laboratory-stage prototype, not evidence that a phone you can buy today charges that fast. The company’s later public milestones focus mainly on electric vehicles, scooters and drones.
Can a phone really charge in five minutes?
StoreDot’s official milestones list a “30-second full mobile phone charge” in 2014. TIME reported that the company demonstrated its technology on a Samsung Galaxy S4 and characterized it as laboratory-stage work. That establishes an early prototype demonstration; it does not show that an ordinary retail Galaxy S4, or today’s consumer phones, could charge at that speed in everyday use.

The distinction matters because a battery-cell demonstration, a prototype device and a shipping smartphone are different things. A result achieved in a laboratory does not by itself establish how a complete phone handles heat, battery longevity, charging limits or repeated use.
Was that a phone test or an EV battery test?
The early claim was about a phone demonstration. StoreDot’s later public results largely concern other kinds of batteries and vehicles. In particular, “100 miles in five minutes” describes estimated driving range added in an EV demonstration—not a universal full charge, and not a smartphone result.

What does “100 miles in five minutes” actually mean?
It is a range-added claim for an EV, not a statement that every vehicle can go from empty to full in five minutes. The amount of range represented by a given quantity of energy depends on the vehicle and its energy use. StoreDot’s 2022 announcement described an EV pouch-cell demonstration and said the technology was being tested by automakers; it did not establish a universal charging time for production cars.
The 2024 Polestar result gives a more specific charging window: a 77-kWh battery went from 10% to 80% in under 10 minutes in a verification prototype. The reported power figures—more than 310 kW sustained and above 370 kW peak—belong to that prototype demonstration. They should not be read as specifications for a phone, every Polestar 5, or a retail charging session under all conditions.

Is StoreDot’s five-minute battery available?
StoreDot announced first-generation five-minute-charge lithium-ion engineering samples on 19 January 2021. The company said the samples were intended to showcase the technology to potential EV and industry partners. An engineering sample is not the same as a battery being mass-produced and offered in a consumer device.

What can be said about StoreDot’s future targets?
In its 2024 announcement with Polestar, StoreDot set roadmap targets of 100 miles of range in four minutes in 2026 and three minutes by 2028. These are forward-looking targets, not results already demonstrated in a consumer product. They concern EV range, not a promised five-minute smartphone charge.
