Can SteamOS run Android games and apps? Not natively on Steam Deck. Valve’s reviewed Steam Deck documentation does not list a built-in Android runtime. A community-maintained Waydroid setup can provide an unofficial Android environment on some SteamOS builds, but it requires setup and ongoing compatibility checks—and it cannot guarantee that a particular app or game will work.
Can I install an APK on Steam Deck?
Not directly as a native SteamOS app. An APK is an Android application package; SteamOS does not include a built-in Android runtime that makes APKs install and run like ordinary desktop software. Valve describes SteamOS as Linux-based and documents Desktop Mode software installation, but its reviewed SteamOS information and Steam Deck software guide do not describe Android support as a standard Deck feature.

To try Android apps, the relevant route is an unofficial Waydroid setup. Waydroid provides an Android environment for Linux, and a third-party project offers an installer aimed at SteamOS and Steam Deck. That does not make APKs natively supported or turn the setup into a Valve-supported feature.
Does Waydroid work on Steam Deck?
A community installer documents a SteamOS-targeted Waydroid setup, but its compatibility depends on the installed SteamOS build and a matching verified bundle. The installer maintainer lists Stable, Beta, and Preview branches as supported only when a compatible bundle is available; development and main-branch builds are described as experimental. These are project-maintainer claims, not Valve guarantees.

- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
What the documented setup requires
For a new installation, the maintainer’s project documentation lists these prerequisites:
- SteamOS Desktop Mode and access to Konsole.
- Sudo access and an internet connection.
- A compatible, verified bundle for the installed SteamOS userspace.
- At least 10 GB of free space on the home filesystem for a new Android installation.
The documented installer checks SteamOS release, build, and compatibility details before applying a bundle. The project lists standard Android 13 images with or without Google Play, plus Android TV variants; it also describes Android 16 test images as experimental. The maintainer reports testing particular version-and-build combinations, but those reports are specific to the combinations named in the project documentation and do not promise compatibility with future releases.

How to start the installer
- Switch the Steam Deck to Desktop Mode.
- Open Konsole.
- Follow the current installer command and prompts in the project documentation. Use the project’s instructions for the installed SteamOS build rather than assuming an old command or bundle remains suitable.
- Proceed only if the installer identifies a compatible verified bundle for the system.
The project documentation is the authority for its current command and available bundles; no single installer command or bundle is appropriate for every SteamOS build.
Will every Android app or game run?
No. An APK built only for ARM may not run on the Deck’s x86_64 environment. The installer maintainer documents ARM translation components for its normal Android 13 images, but that does not establish compatibility for every app. A title may still fail to launch, authenticate, render correctly, or work with the available controls. There is no supported universal compatibility rate or app count.

What happens after a SteamOS update?
SteamOS updates are atomic, and the installer maintainer recommends rerunning the installer after an update so it can select a bundle matching the new system fingerprint. If no compatible bundle is available, its documented repair path stops rather than applying a mismatched one. Keep backups of Android image and user-state data if the installation contains apps or logins you need.
Will Android games run through Proton?
No. Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for Windows games and applications on Linux-based SteamOS. Waydroid is a separate Linux Android runtime. Adding an APK to Steam or forcing Proton compatibility does not convert that Android package into a Windows program. See Valve’s Steam Deck software guide and Waydroid’s guide to installing and running Android applications for the distinction between those routes.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
What is Lepton, and does it mean Steam Deck supports Android?
No. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says, “Android games can be run via Lepton,” in its discussion of Steam Frame. Steam Frame is a separate Arm64 device using Snapdragon hardware; the statement does not establish Lepton support on Steam Deck. The same documentation separately discusses Windows games through Proton and x86 games through FEX on Steam Frame. Read the platform context in Valve’s Steam Frame compatibility documentation.
