What Valve’s standalone update changes
Valve says Half-Life: Alyx now runs entirely on Steam Frame without a host PC, and that Steam Frame owners receive the game when they log in. The game’s general platform listing still identifies Windows (SteamVR); Valve’s page separately describes the headset’s standalone support. Valve’s Half-Life: Alyx page states the standalone capability.

In its September 14, 2026 announcement, Valve described the release as a major update adding Steam Frame standalone gameplay. It includes an ARM64/aarch64 port, rendering and performance optimizations for Steam Frame, foveated rendering for standalone play, and depth reprojection, which Valve says allows smooth gameplay at lower frame rates. These are implementation features, not a guarantee of a particular FPS or zero frame drops.
Standalone and PC-streamed play are different
Steam Frame supports both local applications and PC streaming. Valve describes it as a streaming-first device that also supports standalone VR and non-VR applications in its Steam Frame documentation. In practice, standalone Alyx runs on the headset’s Snapdragon chip; streamed Alyx is rendered by a PC and sent to the headset through the included Wireless Adapter.

Does standalone Alyx drop frames?
The available evidence does not establish a universal answer for every scene or headset. Valve’s update describes optimizations and depth reprojection for smoother play at lower frame rates, but publishes no fixed FPS or zero-drop promise. PC Gamer’s review offers a qualitative comparison, not reproducible scene-by-scene frame-time logs or frame-drop counts.
Foveated rendering concentrates image detail toward the center of the view; PC Gamer’s reviewer noticed the effect in peripheral vision. That observation may help explain the visual trade-off, but it is not itself evidence that frames are dropping. A headset refresh setting such as 72 Hz is also not proof that the game sustains that rate in every scene.

Which mode should you choose?
Choose standalone if you do not have a gaming PC
Standalone support means a host PC is no longer a prerequisite for playing Alyx on Steam Frame. The trade-off in PC Gamer’s review was visibly lower image quality and shorter measured battery runtime than PC-streamed play.

PC Gamer called streaming the best way to play Alyx on Steam Frame and found its streamed image better than the native version. Its reviewer measured 114 minutes for streamed play versus 63 minutes standalone, with Playtime mode selected for both measurements. Treat those as results from one review, not predicted runtimes for every user. A suitable power bank may extend a session while charging, but it does not improve rendering performance; verify charging compatibility and current specifications before buying one.

Adjust expectations around refresh settings
PC Gamer reports that Playtime mode runs at 72 Hz, while higher settings from 90 to 144 Hz are available at a cost to battery life and processing power. Those refresh settings are not a promise that Alyx will render every frame at the selected rate. Valve’s depth-reprojection feature is intended to smooth lower-frame-rate gameplay, not to certify that no drops occur.

If your essential question is whether Alyx can run without a PC connected, Valve’s answer is yes. If your deciding requirement is reliably smooth play with no frame drops, the cited sources do not prove that outcome. They establish standalone support and document review-specific trade-offs in image quality, refresh modes, and battery life—not a controlled, multi-unit performance benchmark.
