Sonos speakers can connect directly to your home Wi-Fi, and Sonos recommends wireless setup for most homes and small businesses when Wi-Fi reaches the rooms where the speakers will be used. Ethernet is an alternative for supported products and network situations, not a universal requirement.
How Sonos works over Wi-Fi
In a wireless setup, Sonos products connect to your home Wi-Fi network. The phone or tablet running the Sonos app must use that same Wi-Fi network, and the app and products need to be on the same subnet. A guest network or a network that isolates connected devices can prevent the app from finding the speakers. Sonos lists system and network requirements, while its wireless setup guidance covers network configuration.

Wi-Fi standards and security
Sonos says all its products can connect to a 2.4 GHz network supporting 802.11b/g and WPA/WPA2 Personal security, or no security. Many products running current software support additional Wi-Fi modes and standards; S1 systems have narrower support. Because compatibility depends on the exact model and software, check the requirements for your product rather than assuming every Sonos speaker supports every modern Wi-Fi feature.

Router settings to check
For wireless setups, Sonos recommends enabling the router’s supported bands and modes, using automatic channel selection and 20 MHz channel width for 2.4 GHz, and selecting Auto or All for 5 GHz and 6 GHz (Wi-Fi 6E). These are setup recommendations, not a promise of coverage or performance in a particular home.
#1 Best Overall
- Dual angled tweeters and a powerful midwoofer deliver rich, balanced stereo sound with deep bass.
- The perfect start or addition to your system, Era 100 SL makes Sonos sound more accessible.
- Stream over WiFi, pair via Bluetooth, or connect a turntable and more with line in.
- Go from unboxing to incredible sound in minutes with a quick plug-in and the Sonos app
- Trueplay fine-tunes Era 100 SL for the unique acoustics of the room.
Does Sonos need Ethernet?
No. Ethernet is not required for a normal wireless setup. In a wired setup, at least one supported Sonos product connects to the router by Ethernet. That product can create a separate, dedicated Sonos wireless network—often called SonosNet—for compatible products. This option may help where Wi-Fi coverage is unreliable, interference is substantial, or a larger system uses many rooms at once.
Wired setup has important limits. The wired product must support Ethernet and SonosNet, the network must support Spanning Tree Protocol, and Ethernet-over-Power devices are unsupported. In a mesh system, Sonos says the wired product must connect to the primary mesh node for this setup. Home-theater surround speakers and subwoofers cannot be the first product wired to create the dedicated network. See Sonos’s wired and wireless setup instructions and verify requirements for your model.

Products that use home Wi-Fi or Ethernet instead
Sonos’s current setup pages identify several products that cannot use the dedicated Sonos wireless network and must use home Wi-Fi or Ethernet instead. The listed models include Arc Ultra, Era 100 family, Era 300, Move family, Roam family, Sonos Play, and Sub 4. Product lists can change, so consult the current Sonos page for the exact model.

Choose the setup that fits your home
| Option | When it fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless over home Wi-Fi | Wi-Fi reliably reaches the rooms where Sonos will be used; Sonos recommends this for most homes. | The app and products use the same network and subnet; avoid unsupported network arrangements. |
| Wired Sonos setup | Wi-Fi is unreliable, coverage is weak, interference is high, or many rooms are used simultaneously. | At least one supported product must connect by Ethernet; check model, mesh-node, and network topology requirements. |
| Improve Wi-Fi coverage | Existing Wi-Fi does not reach the rooms where wireless Sonos is needed. | Sonos suggests mesh Wi-Fi as a coverage approach; it is unnecessary if current coverage is adequate. |
Choose based on signal in the rooms you use, your Sonos model and app generation, your router’s network configuration, and whether a supported Ethernet connection is practical. Sonos does not establish a universal Wi-Fi range, a typical room count per router, or a guaranteed performance figure.

Wi-Fi setups that can cause problems
Sonos identifies several network arrangements as unsupported or problematic for connecting its products. These include:
- Guest networks and networks requiring a captive portal or portal login.
- Wireless extenders.
- Routers that provide only 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Mobile hotspots and other wireless internet connections.
- WPA/WPA2 Enterprise security.
- Ethernet-over-Power devices.
- VPNs that block access to the local network.
Check the network before changing hardware: a speaker may fail to connect because of network isolation, security, or topology rather than insufficient Wi-Fi range.

- Use the built-in handle to bring your music from one place to the next. When the battery needs a boost, set Move 2 on the included Wireless Charging Base, upgraded with a detachable power cable and more compact adapter. Charge on the go with any USB-PD power supply.
Why can’t my Sonos connect to Wi-Fi?
- Confirm the app’s connection. Connect the phone or tablet running the Sonos app to the same Wi-Fi network as the Sonos products—not a guest network.
- Check network compatibility. Verify the product’s supported Wi-Fi bands and security mode, and check whether the network uses a captive portal, enterprise security, or another unsupported arrangement.
- Assess coverage where the speaker sits. If other devices also have weak or slow Wi-Fi in that room, Sonos products are likely to face similar issues. Consider improving coverage, including with mesh Wi-Fi, rather than assuming Ethernet is mandatory.
- Review any wired topology. If using SonosNet, confirm that a compatible product is wired to the router or primary mesh node, and that the network supports the required configuration.
Sonos recommends wireless setup for most home and small-business users, but the result depends on the local network and the specific product. Its support pages do not promise a universal range or a particular number of rooms per router.
Update Sonos after changing your router or Wi-Fi password
If you changed your router, Wi-Fi name, or password, use the Sonos app’s network update flow. For the current Sonos app, go to Settings > Network > Update Networks and follow the prompts. For the S1 Controller, use Settings > System > Network > Wireless Setup. If the system was already wired, the relevant steps may differ; follow the instructions for your setup in Sonos’s network-change guide.
