Yes. A Chromebook can be hacked, and someone can compromise the Google Account you use on it without breaking into ChromeOS itself. ChromeOS has several defenses that reduce common risks, but phishing, malicious extensions or apps, outdated software, and physical access can still create problems.
What ChromeOS security can—and can’t—do
ChromeOS uses multiple protections rather than relying on a single barrier. Google describes Verified Boot as a startup check that can repair the system if it detects corruption. Sandboxing helps isolate webpages and applications, while automatic updates and encryption help protect the operating system and locally stored data. These measures can make attacks harder and limit some damage; they do not prevent every attack or trick.

Chromium’s security documentation includes threats such as malicious webpages, phishing, network manipulation, and malicious or compromised Android apps. The ChromeOS security model also cannot fully defend a device against every attacker with prolonged physical access. The Chromium Project puts the limit this way: “A dedicated adversary with unlimited physical access to a ChromeOS device is hard to defend against.”

Phishing and stolen Google Account credentials
A convincing fake sign-in page or message can trick you into giving away your password. If someone gets your Google Account credentials, they may reach account data without defeating ChromeOS’s local system protections. Treat an unfamiliar sign-in or changed recovery information as an account-security issue, not proof by itself that the Chromebook’s operating system was hacked. Google’s account security guidance explains how to review activity and recover an account.

Malicious websites, extensions, and apps
A webpage can exploit a browser vulnerability or try to deceive you. Extensions may request access to browser data, and an extension that was once trustworthy can later become compromised. The UK National Cyber Security Centre advises checking extension permissions and removing extensions you do not need. Install extensions only when necessary, review the access they request, and remove unfamiliar ones.
Chromebooks may also run Android and Linux apps, depending on the device and configuration. App source and permissions matter: avoid software from untrusted sources and be cautious about granting broad access.

Devices that no longer receive updates
Security updates close newly discovered weaknesses. A Chromebook that has reached its final software update no longer receives ChromeOS and browser security updates, increasing its exposure to future vulnerabilities. Support dates vary by device, so do not assume all Chromebooks have the same lifespan.

Check whether your Chromebook still receives updates
Google’s current policy says ChromeOS devices receive 10 years of automatic updates. The applicable final update date depends on the specific device or platform. To check yours, open Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details → Update schedule. If the device is managed by a school or employer, ask its administrator about support and update policies.

- 15" FHD IPS Display, Intel UHD Graphics
- 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI
- Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam
- Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Silver
If you are deciding whether to keep an older Chromebook, check its individual update date, whether it still receives ChromeOS and browser security updates, and whether it supports the apps you need. Google notes that some older devices receiving extended updates may lose Android app and Google Play Store support; check the terms for your device before relying on those features.
What to do if you think something is wrong
If you see an unfamiliar sign-in or account change
- Use a trusted device to review your Google Account activity and follow Google’s recovery process if you cannot sign in or see activity you do not recognize.
- Secure the account and review its recovery information. A Chromebook reset does not recover stolen credentials or secure an account on its own.
- If the Chromebook is managed by a school or employer, contact its administrator rather than changing managed settings yourself.
If a website, extension, or app is behaving suspiciously
- Remove extensions you do not recognize or no longer need, and review permissions for the ones you keep.
- Uninstall apps you do not trust or no longer use. Be especially cautious with software installed from outside the official source for that app or platform.
- Install available ChromeOS updates and avoid entering account credentials on pages you reached through suspicious links.
If ChromeOS appears corrupted
Google’s Chromebook recovery process reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases files stored locally. Back up local files first if you can. Recovery addresses a damaged or corrupted operating-system installation; it is not a substitute for securing a compromised Google Account.

If you are considering a factory reset
A Powerwash restores factory settings and cryptographically erases user data, though Google notes that some device-related and diagnostic information may remain. Back up files stored locally before proceeding. Choose a reset based on the symptom: account compromise, suspicious browser behavior, and operating-system corruption are different problems and may need different remedies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat “secure” means for a Chromebook
ChromeOS’s layered protections can reduce the risk of common attacks, but no operating system can guarantee that a device or account will never be compromised. Google’s security pages describe the platform’s defenses; claims about an absence of reported ransomware or virus attacks should not be read as proof that account theft, phishing, or other security incidents cannot happen.
