The finding is promising, but narrow: neither shaded nor unshaded corals died during monitoring, so the experiment did not show that shade improves survival.
What the Florida Keys shade experiment tested
Researchers worked at Newfound Harbor, a patch reef in the Lower Florida Keys. They selected 20 colonies of each of two species—*Pseudodiploria clivosa* and *Colpophyllia natans*—and divided the colonies of each species between a shaded group and an unshaded comparison group. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection describes the methods and findings in its May 31, 2025 final report.

How the shades were built and installed
Each experimental shade used a custom PVC frame, spray foam for flotation, and 60% agricultural shade cloth. Tethers held the cloth about 30 cm above the target coral. These were field structures assembled and deployed by researchers, not just cloth placed over a reef.
Permitting delays pushed installation later than planned. The team had intended to deploy the shades when heat stress reached 4 degree heating weeks (DHW), but installation occurred after accumulated stress had passed 7 DHW. DHW is a measure of accumulated heat stress, not the temperature at a single moment.

What changed for shaded corals
The report found significantly less paling beneath the shades during the most thermally stressful monitoring periods, with responses differing by species:
- Pseudodiploria clivosa: shaded colonies did not pale further after deployment, while the unshaded comparison showed additional paling.
- Colpophyllia natans: shaded colonies did not show significant color changes, while control colonies did.
The intervention reduced the light reaching corals, including irradiance and ultraviolet exposure that can compound heat stress. It did not cool the seawater or remove the heat stress the corals had already accumulated. The Florida DEP’s project summary likewise presents shade as a way to limit bleaching-related stress, not as a way to lower ocean temperatures.

Why less paling is not proof of better survival
No coral died in either group during the monitoring period. That means the trial recorded a color and paling difference, but had no mortality contrast from which to demonstrate a survival benefit. The DEP report concludes that temporary shade “could be successful in minimizing or preventing bleaching-related stress on targeted corals, even if deployed after paling has initiated.” That conclusion is about stress and paling, not proven prevention of death.

It does not establish that shade will work equally well for other coral species, at other sites, or under different heat and weather conditions. Broader use remains a management possibility requiring further testing.

How the structures held up in the field
The team temporarily removed the shades during two large wind events, then returned them when conditions allowed. The report says the structures otherwise remained largely intact and needed light cleaning about every two weeks. Their durability is useful practical evidence from this trial, but does not establish that similar structures would withstand every storm or site condition.
In an October 2, 2026 interview with Earth.com, lead researcher Karen Neely said: “We were pretty confident that shades would be effective at mitigating bleaching in these corals, but we were surprised at how durable they were and how little work was required to maintain them.” The account also reports an estimated materials cost of about $30 per shade; that is a news-account estimate, not a cost figure from the DEP report.

How this fits the 2023 Florida Keys heatwave
The 2024 shade trial followed a severe regional heat event, but impacts were not uniform across the Keys. A 2024 peer-reviewed assessment in Frontiers in Marine Science analyzed more than 4,200 monitored brain and boulder coral colonies across nine reefs and found much higher mortality at two inshore sites than at the other monitored sites, with outcomes varying by species. It would be inaccurate to say that all Florida Keys corals died or suffered the same losses.

Temporary shade is a targeted way to reduce light exposure during heat stress; it is not a substitute for reducing warming, nor has this trial established a reef-wide solution. Any field deployment requires permits, appropriate structure design, monitoring, and decisions about storm removal. The experimental result supports testing shade as one tool for selected corals under specific conditions—not treating 60% shade cloth as a standalone product that people can safely install on a reef.
