Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The answer depends in part on how a page embeds each file: SVG used as an image has narrower processing rules than SVG loaded as a document. ScreenshotNeo documents network protections and capture controls, but does not describe an SVG-specific sanitizer or containment mode. If uploads are untrusted, do not assume they are safe merely because a page is being captured.
Why the way an SVG is embedded matters
SVG is a document format, and browsers do not necessarily process it the same way in every context. The W3C SVG 2 processing criteria distinguish an SVG used as an image from one loaded as a document.

SVG in an <img> or CSS image
W3C says an SVG embedded in an <img> must use secure animated mode when the embedding document supports declarative animation, or secure static mode otherwise. In these secure modes, scripts and interactivity are disabled. Secure animated mode can still permit declarative animation; secure static mode permits external references. See the W3C SVG 2 conformance criteria.

A directly viewed SVG is expected to use the most comprehensive processing mode supported by the user agent. SVG loaded through <object>, <embed>, or <iframe> follows document processing rules; an iframe’s sandbox restrictions also apply. These contexts are therefore not interchangeable with <img>. The embedding page’s origin and sandbox configuration also matter to how the content is isolated.

What ScreenshotNeo’s public materials establish
ScreenshotNeo describes a screenshot API that can render a URL or submitted raw HTML. Its API documentation lists controls to block resource categories, including scripts, images, and fetch requests, or to block URLs matching supplied patterns. It also offers a scripts parameter for caller-provided JavaScript. These are configurable capture controls, not evidence of a default policy that sanitizes or disables active content in uploaded SVGs.
The service homepage says browser requests are checked to refuse private, loopback, and cloud-metadata addresses, including through redirects and iframes, and that each capture runs in its own browser context. Those are published claims about network-address filtering and separation between captures. They do not establish that SVG script execution is disabled, that an uploaded SVG is sanitized, or that requests initiated by SVG content are contained in a particular way.
The public materials reviewed do not specify how a user-uploaded SVG is inserted into a page, whether it is served from a distinct origin, sanitized, or rasterized, or which exact browser version and policies apply to this case. Accordingly, the evidence supports neither a blanket “safe” nor a “vulnerable” conclusion; the service-specific behavior is not established by its published documentation.

How to assess an upload-and-capture flow
For a page that displays user-supplied SVG, check the actual rendering path rather than relying on the file extension or the fact that a screenshot is being taken. These distinctions are relevant whether the capture runs in your own browser or through a service.
- Embedding context: determine whether the SVG is used as an
<img>or CSS image, viewed directly, or loaded through<object>,<embed>, or<iframe>. - Active behavior: establish whether scripts and interaction are disabled for that context, and whether declarative animation is permitted.
- External resources: understand whether the rendering mode can load external references and how outbound requests are restricted.
- Isolation: check the origin used for uploaded files and any iframe sandbox restrictions; do not treat capture-to-capture context separation as proof of isolation between an SVG and the host page.
- Documented behavior: look for explicit service documentation or tests covering arbitrary uploaded SVGs, not just general URL capture or network filtering.
If you need to rely on ScreenshotNeo for untrusted uploads, ask the operator to confirm the insertion mode, sanitization or rasterization behavior, isolation boundary, and restrictions on outbound requests initiated by SVG content. Until those details are confirmed for your use case, avoid treating arbitrary uploads as trusted.
Or skip the browser setup
For ordinary captures, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF with one GET request. This example captures a URL as WebP; see the API documentation for options. It does not imply that uploaded SVGs receive a special safety treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can SVG execute JavaScript when rendered?
It depends on the processing context. W3C’s SVG 2 criteria disable scripts in secure image modes, while directly viewed SVGs and document embeds follow broader document processing rules.

Does ScreenshotNeo sanitize uploaded SVG files?
Its public documentation reviewed here does not say whether uploaded SVGs are sanitized, rasterized, or handled in a specific secure mode. Ask ScreenshotNeo to confirm the behavior for your rendering path.
