Yes, but only if the model and the application handle your prompts locally and no connected feature sends them elsewhere. Running inference on your own device can avoid sending prompts to a remote model provider. It does not guarantee that an app will make no network requests, that your conversation is not saved on the device, or that other people cannot reach a local server.
What “local” does—and does not—mean
Local inference means the model’s computation happens on your device rather than on a provider’s remote servers. That can keep prompts out of the inference provider’s hands, but the privacy outcome depends on the complete application and data path: where you type, which process runs the model, what the app retains, and whether tools or connected services receive the content.

Local storage is different from provider-side retention, but it is still storage. Conversation history, prompt caches, logs, crash reports, and backups may contain sensitive information. The llama.cpp server documentation, for example, describes prompt caching that can reuse a previous prompt prefix for a later request; it does not establish a universal logging policy for frontends or other consumer applications. llama.cpp server documentation
Where privacy can break down
Connected app features
An app may combine local inference with features such as cloud fallback, account synchronization, telemetry, crash reporting, or online update checks. The fact that a model runs locally does not establish whether those features are enabled. Check the specific app’s current privacy documentation and settings; behaviors vary by application.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
Network-accessible local servers
A server running on your computer is not necessarily accessible only to you. Its network binding and deployment configuration determine who can connect. The llama.cpp server documentation distinguishes same-machine, local-network, and public deployments, and gives deployment guidance that includes localhost CORS defaults when tools or agent features are enabled, plus API-key and reverse-proxy recommendations for public deployment. Treat network access as a separate configuration decision, not as an automatic property of local inference. llama.cpp server documentation
Tools and local files
A model interface may be granted access to files, a browser, plugins, MCP servers, or other tools. That access creates additional data paths: a tool may read information the model itself could not access, or send information to an external service. The llama.cpp server documentation describes a tool mode that can give a model access to the local file system. Enable only the tools needed for the task, and understand which commands or services they invoke. llama.cpp server documentation

Device and software security
Keeping data on one device does not protect it from someone who can access that device, its accounts, or its backups. Model files, input parsers, runtimes, and integrations can also present security risks. The llama.cpp security policy recommends sandboxing model execution, isolating untrusted models, preprocessing untrusted inputs, and keeping the runtime and libraries updated. It notes that whether a model is trusted depends on context. llama.cpp security policy

| Setup | What to assess |
|---|---|
| Local-only inference on your device | Whether the app has connected features; what conversation history, caches, and logs it keeps; device security and backups; and whether the model can do the task you need. |
| A locally hosted server or tool-enabled app | Who can reach the server; authentication, origin, and firewall controls; file and tool permissions; logging and caching; and isolation of the model and runtime. |
These setups involve different privacy and convenience trade-offs; the available documentation does not establish a universal performance comparison or one best choice for everyone.

How to assess a local AI setup
- Identify the inference process. Confirm which model and runtime handle your prompt, then check the app’s official privacy documentation and settings for cloud fallback, sync, telemetry, crash reporting, and update connections.
- Limit network reach. Keep a model server bound to localhost unless remote access is intentional. If you enable network access, configure the runtime’s authentication and origin controls, apply firewall protections, and decide who should be able to connect. llama.cpp server documentation
- Review each tool separately. Check what files, services, or commands it can access before enabling file access, browser access, plugins, MCP servers, or other integrations. Grant only the permissions needed for the task. llama.cpp server documentation
- Check retained prompt data. Review conversation history, prompt caches, logs, crash dumps, and backups. Protect and delete local records according to their sensitivity; the server’s documented prompt caching is one example of retained prompt state. llama.cpp server documentation
- Use trusted software and isolate what you cannot trust. Get model files and runtimes from sources you trust. Sandbox execution, preprocess untrusted inputs, and keep the runtime and libraries current. llama.cpp security policy
- Share less sensitive information. Minimize the data you provide and redact details the model does not need. OWASP includes data minimization and redaction among its recommended controls for LLM and generative-AI data security; these are safeguards, not a measured estimate of leak frequency. OWASP guidance for LLM and generative-AI data security
What local inference cannot prove by itself
A local model label or offline inference capability alone cannot show that a particular app never connects to the internet, never stores prompts, or never exposes data through tools. Those claims require app-specific documentation or direct, reproducible testing. Likewise, there is no established universal leakage rate or percentage of local-AI apps that transmit prompts. Treat privacy as a property of the configured app, device, runtime, and integrations—not as a guarantee supplied by the word “local.”
