Yes—RPCS3 can play some PS3 games directly from a physical Blu-ray disc, without first making a complete local disc dump. It is not a universal plug-in-and-play feature: you need a compatible drive, a supported RPCS3 build, and the matching disc decryption key.
What direct disc play means
RPCS3 project reporting in September 2026 says direct play support was extended across Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD in an August 2026 update. The project announcement, quoted by VideoCardz on September 6, 2026, said players could use their PS3 games “DIRECTLY FROM THE DISC DRIVE!” Check the current RPCS3 release notes and drive guidance before setup, since support can change with software builds and hardware revisions.

Direct play means you do not have to create a complete disc dump first. It does not mean the disc is decrypted by the drive or that every step involving game data disappears.

What you need
- A compatible Blu-ray drive: PS3 game-disc reading is selective. A drive that plays Blu-ray movies is not necessarily able to read PS3 game discs. Check the full model identifier and hardware revision against current RPCS3 guidance before buying or troubleshooting.
- The matching decryption key: Reporting on RPCS3’s feature says the matching Redump key is required. The key is not supplied by the emulator, drive, or game disc.
- A current RPCS3 build: Use a release that includes direct-disc support for your operating system, and consult current project documentation rather than relying on older FAQ text that predates the feature.
Choose between direct play and a local dump

The better fit depends on whether your drive and key are available and whether you want local game files. RPCS3’s Quickstart guide describes disc and console dumping workflows; check the current guide for supported details.

How to check a drive before buying
- Find the drive’s complete model name and hardware revision in its product specifications or on the device label.
- Compare that exact identifier with RPCS3’s current compatible-drive guidance. Do not rely only on a “Blu-ray” label or a retailer’s movie-playback description.
- Confirm the matching key and current RPCS3 build are available for your setup.
- For an external drive, also confirm your computer has the required connection and that the seller offers a workable return policy in case the specific revision is unsupported.
No single current retail model, price, or stock status is established here; compatibility should be verified for the exact revision rather than inferred from a product family.
Legal and practical limits
RPCS3’s Quickstart guidance says disc software should be self-dumped and directs users to check rules on software distribution in their own country. Laws differ by jurisdiction, so this is not a blanket assurance that copying, keys, or use are lawful everywhere. Consult local rules and use software you are entitled to use.

Older RPCS3 FAQ material may not reflect the later direct-play feature. For current operating-system support, releases, and drive compatibility, prefer the project’s latest guidance and treat model-specific details in third-party copies of the Quickstart as supplementary.
