Can ReShade Upscale Like DLSS or FSR? A Comparison With Native Resolution

ReShade post-processing is not automatically equivalent to DLSS or game-integrated FSR. Here’s how the rendering paths differ and what to record in a fair comparison.

Short answer: ReShade can apply post-processing to a game image, but it is not a drop-in replacement for DLSS Super Resolution or a game’s integrated AMD FSR. Those upscalers use different rendering paths, and DLSS Super Resolution reconstructs frames using temporal information that a simple sharpening shader does not provide. To judge image quality or performance, compare the exact game, upscaler version, settings, hardware and scene—not just the labels.

What each option actually does

The main distinction is where the image comes from and what information the technique uses. “Native” describes the game’s rendering resolution relative to the display output; it does not mean the game has no antialiasing or other processing.

Option How it works What to keep in mind
Native resolution The game renders at the display’s output resolution. Native-resolution antialiasing may still be enabled. Record the render and output resolutions and the antialiasing mode; native is a useful baseline, not a guarantee of the best-looking result.
DLSS Super Resolution NVIDIA describes it as reconstructing higher-resolution output from lower-resolution input using multiple images, motion data and feedback from prior frames. NVIDIA DLSS documentation It is a temporal reconstruction path, not merely a sharpening filter. Availability depends on the game and compatible hardware.
DLAA NVIDIA’s AI anti-aliasing mode constructs an image at native resolution. NVIDIA DLSS documentation DLAA is not an upscaling mode; distinguish it from DLSS Super Resolution when comparing settings.
AMD FSR FSR is a family of version-dependent technologies. AMD documents spatial FSR 1, temporal FSR 2 and 3, and newer ML-based features, with support varying by feature and hardware. AMD FSR overview and AMD compatibility information Name the FSR generation and mode. FSR generally requires game integration; support and compatibility are not identical across versions.
ReShade effects ReShade is a generic post-processing injector for games and video software. Its documented effects include antialiasing, ambient occlusion, depth of field and color correction, and it can access frame color and depth. It supports Direct3D 9, 10, 11, 12, OpenGL and Vulkan. ReShade project A shader can process an image after rendering, but that alone does not make it equivalent to an integrated temporal upscaler. Identify the exact shader or add-on.
Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) AMD describes RSR as driver-level spatial upscaling for supported configurations. It is a fallback for compatible games without integrated upscaling. AMD recommends built-in FSR when available because game-specific optimizations may produce better results. AMD RSR configuration guidance

Can ReShade provide a DLSS equivalent?

Not by virtue of being ReShade. The project describes ReShade as a post-processing injector, while NVIDIA describes DLSS Super Resolution as using lower-resolution images, motion data and prior-frame feedback to reconstruct output. A post-process that sharpens or adjusts an already rendered frame is not evidence that it has the same temporal reconstruction pipeline.

ReShade’s add-on API was introduced in version 5.0, so an add-on should be assessed by its own documentation and behavior rather than treated as an ordinary shader. The project lists ReShade 6.8.0 as released August 2, 2026. ReShade project

Can you use AMD FSR through ReShade?

Do not assume that an effect called “FSR” in a shader list is the same as AMD’s game-integrated FSR. AMD’s FidelityFX Contrast Adaptive Sharpening (CAS) is a sharpening technique that can optionally include upscaling to restore detail after TAA; the name or presence of sharpening does not establish equivalence to a particular FSR generation. AMD FidelityFX CAS documentation

AMD says FSR is available in selected games and requires developer integration. For a supported game, use its named in-game FSR option when comparing that implementation. AMD’s current documentation lists FSR Upscaling 4.1 for Radeon RX 7000 series and newer, while its compatibility table lists FSR 3 upscaling on Radeon RX 590 and newer. These are vendor, version-specific compatibility statements—not guarantees that every game supports each feature. AMD FSR overview and AMD compatibility information

AMD’s FSR 1 documentation gives these input-resolution percentages relative to output resolution. The figures apply to FSR 1 and should not be carried over to later FSR versions as if their modes were identical. AMD GPUOpen FSR 1 documentation

How to make a fair comparison

Compare methods in the same game and on the same machine. A still screenshot can show fine detail, but it cannot establish how stable that detail looks during movement. Check image behavior in motion as well as frame rate and GPU cost.

  1. Choose a repeatable scene. Use the same area, camera position, movement and graphics settings for each capture.
  2. Record the setup. Note GPU, game build, output and render resolution, upscaler generation and version, quality mode, antialiasing setting, ReShade version, exact shader or add-on, and graphics API where relevant.
  3. Compare the right paths. Test native rendering with its AA setting recorded, then each available in-game DLSS or FSR mode. Treat DLAA as native-resolution antialiasing, not an upscale. Test ReShade effects separately and state their exact names.
  4. Inspect moving scenes. Look for detail stability, ghosting or breakup, and changes in fine textures while the camera or objects move; also inspect still images for detail and sharpening artifacts.
  5. Measure performance consistently. Use the same scene and settings for each run. Do not infer a frame-rate gain from image quality alone or compare results from different machines as if they were controlled.

There is no universal winner established by the cited product documentation, and it does not provide a controlled head-to-head benchmark of ReShade-based effects, current DLSS, current FSR and native rendering. Results depend on the game’s implementation, version, settings and hardware.

Which should you choose?

  • Use native resolution as a baseline when you want the game to render at the display output resolution; record any native AA mode rather than describing the image as unprocessed.
  • Try the game’s DLSS Super Resolution option if it is available for your game and hardware and you want its temporal reconstruction path.
  • Try the game’s integrated FSR option where supported, identifying the generation and mode. AMD specifically recommends integrated FSR over RSR when a game supports it.
  • Use ReShade for post-processing when you want its documented shader effects or a particular add-on. Do not call sharpening an equivalent to DLSS or FSR without evidence about the underlying algorithm and pipeline.
