It can help a sunlit cementitious surface absorb less heat, but it does not guarantee a cooler building. “Reflective cement” usually means an engineered cement-based material or composite—not a universal off-the-shelf product—and promising results from research specimens should not be mistaken for a whole-building temperature or energy-savings forecast.
How reflective cement can reduce heat
Solar reflectance, also called albedo, is the share of incoming sunlight a surface reflects. A cementitious surface with higher solar reflectance absorbs less of that solar energy, which can limit its solar heating. The benefit depends on the formulation, exposure and surface condition.

Some engineered cool cementitious composites seek additional cooling by emitting heat as mid-infrared radiation through the atmospheric window, and some also use evaporation. These mechanisms are distinct: a material’s solar reflectance alone does not describe its infrared emission or evaporative behavior.
Why composition and exposure matter
A 2002 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory study examined 32 Portland cement concrete mixes. It found that concrete albedo was related to the albedo of the cement and sand, and, after abrasion, to the rock as well. Cement albedo had a disproportionately strong influence on the concrete’s reflectance. Reflectance rose as hydration progressed and stabilized within six weeks of casting in that study. Research on engineered composites likewise points to microstructure and ingredients, not whiteness alone. Lu et al. reported that surface whiteness, microscale pores and titanium dioxide particle diameter affected visible and near-infrared reflectance in their 2021 cementitious composite study. A 2023 study described effects associated with calcite, calcium-silicate-hydrate phases, water-to-powder ratio, particle size and pore size. Lu et al. What published cooling figures do—and do not—show
Reported figures describe specific specimens and test conditions. They are not interchangeable and should not be read as typical performance for ordinary cement or as a promise about a finished building.

These material-level results do not establish a universal reduction in room temperature or building energy use. Those outcomes depend on the complete building assembly and its exposure, among other factors; the cited studies do not support applying a fixed energy-savings percentage to a building.

Where cool cementitious materials may be used
Research identifies roofs, cement-based façade tiles, paving blocks and pervious pavements as possible applications. The right material and performance criteria depend on the intended use; a surface for a roof is not automatically suitable for a façade or pavement. What to check before choosing a material
- Application: Confirm the product is designed for the roof, façade, pavement or other surface where it will be installed.
- Comparable measurements: Check solar reflectance and, if relevant, infrared emissivity. Look for the test method, specimen and exposure conditions rather than relying on a single headline figure.
- Durability: Ask how performance holds up under local weather, dirt, abrasion and any relevant freeze/thaw or chemical exposure. The 2002 concrete study found that simulated exposure often lowered average albedo.
- Project requirements: Verify structural suitability, installation details, local-code requirements and manufacturer specifications for the actual building assembly.
- Evidence level: Distinguish a laboratory specimen result from an outdoor field test or a measured building outcome. A result at one level does not establish the next.
White Portland cement and titanium dioxide appear in the cited materials research, but ingredient relevance is not proof that generic bagged cement or a pigment will reproduce a tested cooling composite’s performance. 2023 study record · Lu et al. (2021)
