People ask about PS4 and PS5 “crossplay” in GTA V because the games are built differently across generations, and Rockstar’s terminology can be confusing. The good news: PS4 and PS5 players can play together in GTA Online, as long as you meet the game-state and matchmaking requirements.
The caveat: you’re not getting universal cross-platform play (no PC/Xbox crossplay). Important distinction: Cross-gen play here is about GTA Online. GTA V’s offline story mode isn’t part of “crossplay” at all.
What Rockstar Means by Crossplay (and What It Doesn’t)
Rockstar’s cross-gen support is best understood as “play together across console generations inside GTA Online.” It’s not the same as the broader crossplay you might expect from other games.
Cross-gen: PS4 ↔ PS5

No crossplay: PlayStation ↔ Xbox / PC

How to Play Together (Step-by-Step)
Use this workflow when both players are trying to start a session in the same time window. It’s the most reliable approach for PS4 ↔ PS5.
Step 1: Confirm You’re on the Same GTA Online Ecosystem
On PS5, verify you’re launching the GTA V build that you intend to use for online. If you have both PS4 and PS5 editions installed, you can accidentally boot the “other” one and get into a mismatched session state.
On both consoles, open the game and ensure you can load into GTA Online successfully (not just the menu).

In practice, the fastest cross-gen play starts with PSN friendship being correct on both ends.
- On each console, go to Friends in the PlayStation menu.
- Confirm the PS4 and PS5 accounts both show each other as friends.
- Check that both accounts are able to receive messages/invites in PSN (privacy restrictions can block invites).
Step 3: Launch GTA Online on Both Consoles
To avoid timing issues, have both players fully load into GTA Online. Don’t leave one player stuck at a loading screen or in a lobby that hasn’t spawned a session host yet.
- Start GTA V.
- Select GTA Online.

- Have one player create an invite-only or friends session (depending on what’s available in the current UI).

Troubleshooting When PS4 and PS5 Won’t Join the Same Session
When cross-gen joining fails, don’t guess for 30 minutes. Use a short checklist and isolate the cause.
NAT Type and Connection Issues
GTA Online is very sensitive to NAT type and connection stability. If NAT is strict on either console, joins can fail with generic errors.
- On each console, check network status in PlayStation settings (look for NAT type).
- If NAT is Type 3 (Strict), fix it (router configuration, UPnP, or switching networks).
- Try again after changing nothing else but NAT status.
Also avoid heavy background traffic (cloud backups, large downloads) while joining.
Game Version/Update Mismatch
Even a small update mismatch can prevent successful session joins. Make sure both consoles are on the latest available build.
- On PS4: check Settings > System Software Update and GTA V updates.

Enhanced & Expanded (PS5) vs PS4 Version

Make the host create a session with friends-only access (based on the current GTA Online menu options) and keep both players in the same lobby flow.
- Host starts GTA Online and creates a friends/invite-only session.

- Only after both are spawned should anyone start a job or mission.
Swap Who Hosts
