A 2020 laboratory study found that ozonation can turn certain N-methylamine drugs, including fluoxetine (Prozac) and methamphetamine, into nitromethane. If water is chlorinated afterward, nitromethane can form chloropicrin, a halonitromethane byproduct. The study establishes a plausible treatment-process mechanism—not that these drugs caused a measured toxin concentration in ordinary tap water or that consumers face a demonstrated health risk from this pathway.
What the study found
Jiaming Lily Shi and Daniel L. McCurry studied how wastewater ozonation affects N-methylamine compounds in treatment contexts relevant to potable reuse. Their paper, published in Environmental Science & Technology in 2020, identified nitromethane as an intermediate that can lead to halonitromethanes, including chloropicrin, during later chlorination. In laboratory reactions, ozonation of the tested N-methylamine drugs formed nitromethane ubiquitously, typically at yields greater than 50%. That figure is a reaction yield under the study conditions; it is not a measurement of nitromethane or chloropicrin in finished drinking water, nor an estimate of anyone’s exposure.

- Ozonation: Ozone treatment of wastewater can transform certain N-methylamine compounds into nitromethane. The paper examined stimulant drugs including ephedrine and methamphetamine, as well as antidepressants including fluoxetine.
- Intermediate formation: Nitromethane can persist as an intermediate in the treatment sequence. In the tested wastewater cases, it accounted for most, and in one case all, of the subsequent chloropicrin formation.
- Chlorination: Chlorination after ozonation can convert nitromethane into chloropicrin, also called nitrochloroform.
The finding is about a sequence of treatment steps. It does not mean that taking these medicines or using methamphetamine directly contaminates a household’s tap water, or that every water system uses this treatment train.

Why the result matters for wastewater reuse
The study points to a question for systems that treat wastewater for potable reuse: what happens to nitromethane during the full treatment train, and how can it be controlled before chlorination creates halonitromethanes? The authors wrote, “These results suggest that nitromethane fate during reuse and nitromethane control should be investigated.” That is a research priority, not a claim that a control method is already established for all plants.

Chemistry World reported that biologically active filtration looked promising to the researchers as a way to break down harmful chemicals, while noting treatment tradeoffs. That 2020 discussion is a research direction, not a universal operating recommendation or a household remedy.
What to do if you are concerned about your tap water
This study cannot determine the safety of a particular utility’s water. It reports no measurements from a named public water supply and does not establish current local treatment practices or regulatory limits. For a location-specific answer, consult the water utility’s current quality report or contact the utility and ask about its source water, treatment process, and any relevant monitoring results. The study alone is not a reason to buy a home test kit or filter for this pathway.
