Can Process Explorer Find Open Files on Windows 10?

Process Explorer excels at finding open handles and inspecting loaded DLLs, but Microsoft’s current requirement lists Windows 11 and higher—not Windows 10.

Process Explorer is a strong choice when you need to find which process has a file or directory open, inspect loaded DLLs, or examine process ownership. But Microsoft’s current listing for Process Explorer v17.14 specifies Windows 11 and higher, so it does not establish support for Windows 10. For ordinary resource and startup checks, use Task Manager; for a real-time record of system activity, use Process Monitor.

What Process Explorer does best

Process Explorer is a specialist process-inspection utility, not simply a replacement for every Task Manager feature. Microsoft describes a two-pane interface: the upper pane lists active processes and their owning accounts, while the lower pane displays either handles opened by the selected process or the DLLs and memory-mapped files it has loaded.

Its search can identify processes that have a particular handle or DLL. That makes it useful when a file or directory cannot be changed because a process is holding it open, when investigating a DLL-version problem, or when looking into a handle leak. Does Process Explorer support Windows 10?

Microsoft’s current Process Explorer page lists version 17.14, published September 10, 2026, and gives the client requirement as “Windows 11 and higher.” It does not list Windows 10. That means current official documentation does not establish Windows 10 support; it does not, by itself, prove the program cannot launch or run on a Windows 10 computer.

Compatibility of v17.14 with Windows 10 is unresolved in the available evidence, so do not treat older compatibility claims or anecdotes as a current guarantee. If you need a tool with documented suitability for your Windows 10 setup, start with the Windows utilities included with the system rather than relying on an unsupported assumption. The Process Explorer page says installation consists of running procexp.exe and also provides access to the official download and Sysinternals Live.

Which process tool should you choose?

Tool Best fit What it shows
Task Manager Routine resource checks and startup management Microsoft describes it as a system monitor and startup manager that shows performance and resource consumption. Microsoft’s Task Manager guidance is for Windows 11; the feature description does not settle every Windows 10 UI detail.
Process Explorer Identifying a process’s ownership, open handles, or loaded DLLs Current process details, handles, DLLs, and memory-mapped files; Microsoft’s current client requirement is Windows 11 and higher. Microsoft documentation
Process Monitor Tracing what the system does over time Real-time file system, Registry, process, thread, and DLL activity. Microsoft’s Process Monitor documentation

Use Task Manager for routine checks

Choose Task Manager when you want to review resource consumption or manage startup items. It is the practical first stop for everyday monitoring; Process Explorer’s extra detail is most useful when you have a specific process-level question.

Use Process Explorer to inspect current process state

Choose it to look for the process currently holding a handle or to inspect a process’s loaded DLLs and owner. It answers questions about what a process has open or loaded, subject to the Windows 10 support caveat above.

Use Process Monitor to see activity over time

Choose Process Monitor when you need an event trace—for example, to see file, Registry, or process activity as it happens. It addresses a different question from Process Explorer: what activity occurred, rather than which process currently has a particular handle or module.

Windows 10’s support status is separate from tool compatibility

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes through Windows Update after that date. This is the operating system’s lifecycle status; it is not proof that any particular utility will or will not launch. Read Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support notice.

A deeper Sysinternals reference

For a broader printed introduction, Microsoft Press lists Troubleshooting with the Windows Sysinternals Tools, 2nd Edition, published October 17, 2016. It covers Process Explorer and Process Monitor in depth, but its age means it should not be treated as a guide to current software versions or interfaces. The book is optional; it is not needed to use Process Explorer. Microsoft Press book listing.
