No—not in the ordinary sense. A houseplant cannot live inside you and oxygenate your blood. Photosynthesis requires light, and no evidence shows ordinary plants growing inside people or supplying oxygen to the whole body. Medical researchers are instead testing engineered, local systems that use photosynthetic microalgae or plant tissue in wounds. Those experiments are early and do not amount to internal oxygen therapy.
What the question really involves
Plants and algae can produce oxygen when their photosynthetic machinery receives light, carbon dioxide and suitable conditions. That fact does not automatically translate into oxygen production inside a human. The body would need to keep the photosynthetic material alive, illuminate it, prevent harmful immune reactions, and move the generated oxygen into oxygen-starved tissue or blood at a clinically useful rate.

Those requirements are why the relevant medical work does not involve putting a conventional plant in the stomach, lungs or bloodstream. Instead, scientists are developing deliberately engineered materials or living photosynthetic microorganisms for narrowly defined applications, especially local wound healing. The strongest human evidence described to date concerns a scaffold placed in skin wounds, not whole-body oxygenation.

Photosynthesis needs usable light
Photosynthesis is light-driven. Sunlight or an artificial light source must reach the photosynthetic cells for oxygen production to occur. Most internal tissues are not exposed to the intense, sustained illumination that a plant would need. Light also becomes harder to deliver safely as the target moves deeper into the body; shining enough energy into tissue could itself cause injury.

A plant is not a self-contained oxygen machine
Even a healthy plant exchanges gases with its surroundings rather than acting like a sealed oxygen cylinder. It needs water, carbon dioxide, nutrients and a way to dispose of metabolic by-products. Its cells also respire, consuming oxygen. A plant placed in the body would therefore face an unfamiliar chemical and physical environment, while the body would have to tolerate the foreign tissue.
Oxygen must reach the right place
Oxygen made by a photosynthetic cell would first have to dissolve in surrounding fluid and then diffuse into nearby tissue or enter the circulation. Production in a small pocket would not replace the lungs’ continuous gas exchange or the cardiovascular system’s transport role. A local oxygen source might help a poorly oxygenated wound; that is a very different claim from supplying the oxygen needs of the brain, heart and other organs.
What the first human study actually tested
An implanted microalgae scaffold for skin wounds
A 2021 first-in-human, early-phase study evaluated scaffolds containing the photosynthetic microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii in eight patients with full-thickness skin wounds. The material was used at the wound site, where local tissue regeneration was the goal. The study was not an experiment in placing algae throughout the body, and it did not test whether a person could breathe less or maintain normal blood oxygen without functioning lungs.
The abstract reports that the algae did not trigger deleterious local or systemic immune responses during a 90-day follow-up and that tissue regeneration occurred. This is a safety and feasibility observation in a small, specific patient group. Eight participants and 90 days of follow-up cannot establish how the approach performs across different wounds, diseases, ages or longer periods, nor can they prove that photosynthesis supplied meaningful oxygen to the entire body.

“Overall, this trial shows that the presence of the photosynthetic microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii in the implanted scaffolds did not trigger any deleterious local or systemic immune responses in a 90 days follow-up, allowing full tissue regeneration.”
The wording is important: the reported result concerns immune response and wound regeneration. It should not be rewritten as proof that plants can oxygenate a person internally.
Could algae oxygenate a wound?
That is a more realistic research question than “Can a plant oxygenate a human?” A wound dressing or scaffold can keep photosynthetic material next to a limited region of tissue. If light reaches the material, oxygen generated there could potentially improve the local environment for healing. The approach is still experimental, and the human study above was an early safety-focused trial rather than a definitive efficacy test.

It also does not show that an algae-containing dressing would work without controlled design, sterile handling, appropriate illumination and medical supervision.

What the plant-tissue proof of concept found
A separate 2024 proof-of-concept study examined explants of the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha as a possible source for customizable photosynthetic wound dressings. The researchers reported oxygen release under the illumination and temperature conditions they tested. The work also included co-culture experiments, zebrafish studies, ex vivo skin-biopsy tests and human skin-irritation assessments.
Those experiments indicate that plant tissue can be investigated as a local biomaterial, but they do not show plants growing inside a person or meeting a person’s overall oxygen demand. Results obtained in a laboratory setup, an animal model, tissue outside the body or a skin-irritation test answer different questions from a long-term implanted therapy in humans. The study is best understood as an exploratory step toward wound-healing materials.
Could algae circulate in the blood and make oxygen?
Researchers have proposed a much more ambitious idea called intravascular photosynthesis: administering photosynthetic microorganisms so that they circulate near oxygen-starved tissues. A 2024 review discusses this as a possible future direction and introduces the idea of engineered circulating cells called “chlorocytes.” A 2025 review likewise surveys algae-based biomedical platforms and potential applications.

Neither review describes chlorocytes as an approved treatment or an established clinical procedure. They present a research hypothesis that would require solutions to fundamental problems. Blood-borne organisms would need to remain controllable, avoid dangerous immune or inflammatory reactions, travel to useful locations, receive enough light, and produce oxygen without creating unacceptable effects elsewhere. Clinicians would also need reliable ways to stop or remove them and to verify how much oxygen reaches a target tissue.

Delivering light is especially difficult for a systemic approach. External light does not freely illuminate every blood vessel, and implanting light sources introduces its own risks and engineering constraints. A proposal can be scientifically interesting while remaining far from a treatment that hospitals can offer.

Why oxygen production is not the same as oxygen therapy
For any internal oxygen-generating system, researchers would have to measure more than whether bubbles or dissolved oxygen appear in a dish. They would need to establish the amount produced under realistic light and temperature conditions, how quickly it reaches living cells, whether production remains stable, and whether the oxygen level is enough to change a clinical outcome.
They would also have to account for periods without light. A photosynthetic system would not be expected to produce oxygen continuously in darkness, and its net gas exchange could vary with temperature, nutrients, carbon dioxide availability and the health of the cells. A wound scaffold might be positioned where controlled illumination is possible; the same assumption cannot simply be extended to deep organs or circulating blood.

Safety is another separate question. Living algae or plant cells could provoke immune reactions, migrate, multiply, die and release cellular contents, or interfere with healing. The 2021 wound trial’s lack of deleterious local or systemic immune responses during its reported 90-day period is encouraging for that limited setting, but it does not eliminate every possible risk or establish long-term safety in other uses.

What patients should and should not infer
- Do not put a houseplant, plant extract or unsterile algae into a wound or body cavity. The experimental materials were purpose-designed medical scaffolds or controlled plant-tissue preparations.
- Do not treat algae supplements, indoor plants or aquarium organisms as oxygen equipment. Nothing in the cited studies supports a consumer product that oxygenates someone from inside.
- Do not substitute photosynthetic ideas for emergency care. Shortness of breath, blue lips, confusion or suspected low blood oxygen require urgent medical evaluation and established oxygen or respiratory treatment when indicated.
- Interpret “safe” in context. The human finding was limited to eight full-thickness wound patients followed for 90 days; it was not a declaration of general safety for systemic use.
How to read future headlines about “oxygen-producing plants”
Check four details before accepting a claim. First, identify the organism: a microscopic alga or engineered cell is not the same as a conventional plant. Second, identify the location: a surface dressing, an implanted wound scaffold, an animal model and the bloodstream represent progressively different challenges. Third, check whether the result is oxygen detected in a test system, improved healing, immune safety or actual changes in a patient’s oxygenation. Finally, look for the duration, number of participants and lighting conditions.
A headline that says “plants produce oxygen in the body” may be compressing a much narrower result, such as oxygen release by an illuminated explant or a scaffold that tolerated algae in eight patients. The details determine what conclusion is justified.
Bottom line for the literal question
Plants do not currently function as internal oxygen suppliers for humans. Photosynthetic medical systems may eventually help oxygen-starved tissue, and early work has explored algae-containing wound scaffolds and plant-derived dressings. The human evidence remains local and preliminary, while circulating photosynthetic cells remain a proposed research direction. No evidence here supports using a plant or algae product to oxygenate the whole body or replace established medical care.
