Perfluorocubane can accept an extra electron, and a 2022 experiment reported evidence that the resulting unpaired electron is predominantly inside the molecule’s cage. But “electron in a box” is a useful model, not a settled literal picture: later theoretical work disputes whether encapsulation explains the effect, and a 2026 study says the confined state’s precise nature remains under discussion.
What is perfluorocubane?
Perfluorocubane, with the formula C8F8, is cubane—a carbon framework shaped like a cube—with its hydrogen atoms replaced by fluorine. Its compact, highly fluorinated structure makes it an unusual electron acceptor. In 2022, researchers reported synthesizing the molecule by reacting cubane with fluorine gas in liquid phase. X-ray crystallography confirmed its solid-state structure, while electrochemical and spectroscopic measurements supported its ability to accept an electron. The University of Tokyo’s 2022 announcement summarizes that work.

What does the “electron in a box” claim mean?
When perfluorocubane accepts an electron, it forms a radical anion: a negatively charged molecule with an unpaired electron. The 2022 team examined that radical anion using electron spin resonance (ESR) under matrix-isolation conditions at 77 K. The ESR result was interpreted as evidence that the unpaired electron is predominantly inside the cage.
That is evidence from a spectroscopic measurement and its interpretation—not a photograph or direct image of an electron sitting at a particular point. The phrase “electron in a box” translates a proposed account of the molecule’s electronic structure into a vivid analogy. The analogy is helpful, but it should not be mistaken for a settled description of exactly where the electron is.

What did the 2026 study add?
A 2026 study moved from the isolated radical anion to a larger molecule called Flu-Cub, made by linking perfluorocubane to dimethylfluorene. In polar solvents, researchers photoexcited Flu-Cub and used picosecond transient absorption spectroscopy to observe charge separation and subsequent charge recombination. They analyzed the reaction kinetics using the semiclassical Marcus framework. This is evidence about charge-transfer dynamics in the linked construct, not a repeat measurement of the isolated perfluorocubane radical anion.
The authors describe perfluorocubane’s lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) as composed entirely of σ* orbitals and attribute its electron-accepting behavior to its compact cubic structure. They model the confined state as point-charge-like, contrasting it with electron delocalization over the surface of conventional π-conjugated acceptors. Those are the authors’ electronic-structure interpretation and model; the paper itself notes that the precise nature of the confined state remains under discussion. Akiyama, Higashio, Sotome and coauthors’ 2026 Nature Communications paper reports the study.

Fitted values for Flu-Cub
The study fitted the following parameters for electron transfer in the Flu-Cub system. They describe that system and analysis; they are not universal constants for perfluorocubane.
| Parameter | Reported fitted value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| λs | 1.08 eV | Solvent reorganization energy |
| λv | 0.509 eV | Vibrational reorganization energy |
| V | 76.3 cm−1 | Electronic coupling |
Is the electron really encapsulated?
That interpretation is contested. In a 2026 theoretical analysis, Riedmiller and coauthors say their calculations do not support electron encapsulation as the common cause of the perfluoro cage effect. Instead, they describe a central confining nodal surface in the spin density and develop a quantitative account based on a confined particle without invoking encapsulation. Their paper, “How (not) to Cage an Electron,” offers a different way to explain the phenomenon.

The distinction matters because “inside the cage” can refer to different things: an interpretation of an ESR signal, the shape of an orbital, a calculated spin-density distribution, or a model for confinement. These descriptions are related, but they are not interchangeable proof of one simple physical picture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do calculation method and molecular context matter?
Results for one cage or computational setup do not automatically establish what happens for every fluorinated molecule. A 2025 density-functional and coupled-cluster study’s reported search result found evidence for interior electron capture only for perfluoroadamantane among the molecules considered, and only before geometry relaxation. A vertical, unrelaxed calculation asks about electron attachment before the molecule’s geometry has adjusted; it does not by itself demonstrate that the relaxed anion is stable. The 2025 study is a reason to keep those distinctions explicit, not a direct test of the later Flu-Cub experiment.
