Parents can turn off or narrow voice chat in GTA Online, and can use platform family or privacy settings to limit account communication or multiplayer access. These controls do different jobs: muting a player does not block multiplayer, and an in-game voice-chat setting does not necessarily restrict other account-level communication.
Turn off or narrow voice chat in GTA Online
Rockstar’s Online Communication and Privacy guidance describes an in-game voice-chat control. In GTA Online, open the Pause menu, choose Settings, select Voice Chat, and set “Voice Chat Enabled” to off. With voice chat disabled, the player cannot hear or speak to other players through GTA Online voice chat.

To hear only a narrower group, use the Voice Chat option to select which group the player can hear. This changes voice-chat reach; it is not a general multiplayer block.
Mute a specific player
For one player, open Pause > Online > Players, highlight the player, choose Options, then select Toggle Mute. Rockstar’s mute instructions also note that the Voice Chat option can control who the player hears. Muting an individual does not turn off everyone’s voice chat or prevent the child from joining online sessions.

Use platform family controls for broader restrictions
Platform-level settings can govern communication or multiplayer access beyond GTA Online’s own voice-chat menu. The available options and navigation depend on the device and account type, so use the family or privacy controls for the platform the child actually plays on.
PlayStation
PlayStation says a family manager, parent, or guardian can manage a child’s privacy settings, including who can interact with the child through games, parties, and messages. See PlayStation’s privacy settings guidance and review the child account’s game interaction and communication permissions. This is general account-level guidance, not a GTA-specific multiplayer switch; the cited page does not establish a single setting that blocks GTA Online while leaving other online play available.

Xbox consoles
Rockstar’s Xbox console voice-chat guidance identifies Xbox privacy and online-safety permissions as relevant to GTA Online voice and text communication, invites, and communication outside the Xbox network. If the aim is to limit chat, inspect the child account’s Xbox communication permissions, including who can communicate and whether communication outside the Xbox network is allowed. Xbox menus can change, so follow the current account settings labels rather than relying on an old navigation path.

For GTA Online launched through the Xbox app on PC, Rockstar documents separate Xbox privacy permissions that can restrict entry to multiplayer. Its Xbox app on PC support instructions say disabling “You can join multiplayer games” or “You can join cross-network play” can make GTA Online unavailable. In this PC context, cross-network play means playing with PC users on different launchers; Rockstar says PC players cannot play with console players. These instructions are specific to the Xbox app on PC, not every PC launcher.

Rockstar also documents Xbox app on PC permissions affecting voice chat, Crews, Jobs, and user-generated content in its related support article. That broader set of settings is distinct from simply switching off in-game voice chat.
