The project says repository contents and structure are encrypted at rest and in transit—but its own technical paper describes network activity that can reveal app use or other metadata. Encryption is not anonymity.
What is Ouisync?
Ouisync is free, open-source software for synchronizing and sharing files between devices. Instead of relying on a central cloud account as the repository, it connects peers that share a repository. Ouisync describes sharing as working “with or without the internet”; actual synchronization still depends on devices being able to connect over an available network path. See the Ouisync homepage and its library repository.

A repository is the collection of files and folders managed for synchronization. You create or import files into one, then share access using a token that determines what another peer is allowed to do.

How do Ouisync’s sharing modes work?
The technical paper describes three token types. It is a technical overview rather than a formal specification; the paper says the source code is the authoritative implementation.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
| Access mode | What the recipient can do |
|---|---|
| Write | Read repository contents and make changes. |
| Read-only | Read repository contents, but not modify them. |
| Blind | Store and synchronize encrypted repository data without reading its contents. |
Blind access is useful when a peer can contribute storage or connectivity but should not be able to inspect the shared files. Because the peer exchanges encrypted data without decrypting it, blind access differs from ordinary read-only access: a read-only recipient can view the repository.
These permissions describe what a token grants; they do not by themselves establish that a device or its user is trustworthy. Protect access tokens as credentials and grant only the mode a recipient needs. The Ouisync technical paper explains the token model.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
Is Ouisync secure?
Ouisync says it encrypts repository contents and filesystem structure—including filenames—both at rest and while data is transferred. It also says peers can synchronize data without decrypting it, enabling blind storage. Those are the project’s stated design claims, not evidence of an independent security audit or test. See the security overview.
Encryption protects the content from being read by peers that lack the relevant access, but it does not make use of the app invisible. Ouisync’s technical paper discusses observable network activity, including distributed hash table (DHT) messages, local multicast, peer exchange, NAT detection, and connections to caching servers. Such signals may reveal app use or other metadata. The paper also enumerates threat scenarios; it does not promise universal protection or anonymity.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
- Use blind access when a peer should store encrypted data but not read repository contents.
- Use read-only access when a recipient needs to view files without making changes.
- Do not interpret encryption as protection against every network-level observation or threat.
Can Ouisync sync files without internet?
The project says Ouisync can be used with or without internet connectivity. That does not mean every pair of devices can synchronize regardless of their network conditions: peers still need a way to reach one another, such as a usable local network path. The project’s description supports offline-capable, peer-to-peer use, not a guarantee that synchronization will work in every disconnected setup. Check the homepage for the project’s current connectivity description.
Which devices support Ouisync?
The GUI repository lists Android, Windows, and Linux as supported. The homepage labels iOS as in progress, which is not the same as a released, supported app. Platform status and compatible versions can change, so consult the project’s GUI repository and homepage for current downloads and release details. Android distribution is also listed on Google Play.

- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
What does Ouisync cost, and what license does it use?
The project describes Ouisync as free and says the app has no subscription, in-app purchases, ads, or tracking. The library repository identifies the library as licensed under MPL-2.0. That library license should not be assumed to determine the licensing of every dependency or component; consult the published license files for the specific software you use. See the about page and library repository.
