Sometimes—but not automatically. A mini PC can run Home Assistant and other self-hosted services, replacing a Raspberry Pi or separate smart-home hub in many homes. It can replace a NAS only when its storage connections, drive capacity, failure protection, and backup design meet NAS requirements. Because the model and test configuration behind the original claim are unspecified, the defensible conclusion is about capabilities and trade-offs, not a guaranteed three-device replacement.
What a mini PC can consolidate
Home Assistant lists a Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NUC, or virtual machine as suitable hosts when the owner has appropriate hardware or wants to run additional services. That makes a mini PC a credible alternative to a Pi for the controller itself, while leaving enough CPU and memory for selected server workloads.
One computer might host Home Assistant, file sharing, media services, backups, monitoring, and containers. Consolidation can reduce cables, power adapters, and separate maintenance tasks. It also creates a larger failure domain: one failed power supply, storage device, operating-system update, or network connection can take down several functions at once.
When it really replaces a Raspberry Pi or hub
Home Assistant OS on a mini PC
Home Assistant supports x86-64 computers. Its generic PC installation uses a compatible internal boot device—such as SATA storage, an SSD, M.2 storage, or eMMC—plus a USB stick and Ethernet. Writing the image overwrites the destination medium, so anything on that drive must be backed up first.

The official Raspberry Pi route calls for a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 with at least 2 GB of RAM, a suitable power supply, a microSD card, and Ethernet. A mini PC can offer faster storage, more memory, and a sturdier boot device, but those benefits depend on the actual model and configuration.
Virtualized Home Assistant
Home Assistant OS can run in a virtual machine. This is useful when the mini PC already runs a hypervisor and must host several isolated services. Home Assistant describes the virtual-machine and container alternatives as routes for people comfortable with virtualization, containers, or command-line administration.

Virtualization adds a management layer: you must maintain the hypervisor, virtual disks, networking, snapshots, and device passthrough. A USB radio used for Zigbee, Thread, or Matter may need to be passed through to the virtual machine and checked after host reboots or hardware changes.
Container limitation
A Home Assistant container is flexible, but the container installation does not include Home Assistant apps. If you rely on those apps for add-ons and one-click service management, Home Assistant OS in a dedicated installation or virtual machine is a closer fit.

Why NAS replacement is a separate question
Running file-server software does not turn a small computer into a NAS. A NAS replacement needs an end-to-end storage plan:
- Drive connectivity: internal bays, SATA ports, M.2 slots, or a reliable external enclosure.
- Capacity: enough usable space for current data and growth after filesystem overhead and any redundancy.
- Failure protection: mirroring, parity, or another design that limits downtime when a drive fails.
- Independent backup: a second copy on different hardware or at another location. Redundancy is not a backup.
- Serviceability: a practical way to replace failed drives and recover the system.
TrueNAS recommends drives designed for NAS systems, but the title supplies no evidence that the unnamed mini PC has multiple internal bays, a suitable enclosure, or a tested TrueNAS configuration. A single internal SSD can provide shared storage; it is not equivalent to a redundant NAS array.

| Is cooling adequate for continuous load? | Virtual machines, disks, and media workloads can sustain heat and fan noise. | No matched thermal or noise test is provided. |
| What happens when it fails? | Consolidation turns one hardware fault into a multi-service outage. | A recovery and backup plan is required before migration. |
Power, noise, and the limits of comparisons
Home Assistant publishes Green consumption of about 1.7 W at idle and 3 W under load. Those figures describe Home Assistant Green, not the unspecified mini PC and not a complete mini-PC-plus-storage setup.
Raspberry Pi documentation reports approximate Raspberry Pi 4B average current of 0.6 A at idle and 1.2 A under stress in tests dated to its stated 2019 conditions. The measurements included a display, keyboard, and mouse, and Raspberry Pi warns that attached USB devices and HATs can increase consumption. Current values should not be converted into comparable wattage without specifying voltage and the complete setup.

For a fair decision, measure the complete system at the wall: mini PC, memory, internal and external drives, USB radios, enclosure, and power adapter. There is no matched benchmark here establishing which option is faster, quieter, or cheaper overall.
Reliability and outage behavior
Home Assistant says an own-hardware setup can continue core operation when the internet is down. That does not make every automation independent of the network: cloud integrations, remote access, DNS, wireless access points, radio coordinators, and mains power remain dependencies.
Consolidation also changes the recovery procedure. If the mini PC hosts both the controller and storage, a host failure can interrupt lights, automations, dashboards, and file access simultaneously. Keep exported Home Assistant backups and important files on another device, and test that you can restore them without the original host.
A practical migration plan
- Inventory the existing jobs. List Home Assistant, radios, file shares, media, backups, databases, VPN access, and any Raspberry Pi-specific hardware.
- Check the mini PC. Confirm x86-64 support, RAM, boot-device compatibility, Ethernet, USB ports, expansion options, cooling, and power-adapter quality.
- Choose the operating model. Use Home Assistant OS for the simplest dedicated controller, or a supported hypervisor when you are prepared to manage virtual machines and storage.
- Design storage separately. Decide where primary data, redundancy, and independent backups will live before moving NAS workloads.
- Install safely. Back up the target drive, write the Home Assistant image only to the intended medium, connect Ethernet, and verify boot before importing configuration.
- Add radios deliberately. For Zigbee, Thread, or Matter, use compatible hardware such as Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 where appropriate and verify current protocol support and passthrough behavior.
- Test failure and restoration. Reboot the host, disconnect the network, simulate a failed service, and restore a Home Assistant backup and a file from the independent copy.
- Measure the finished system. Check wall power, temperatures, fan noise, network stability, and storage health after all drives and accessories are connected.
Who should consolidate—and who should not
A good fit
- You want Home Assistant and a few self-hosted services on one wired, always-on computer.
- You can maintain a hypervisor or containers if you choose virtualization.
- Your storage needs are modest or you already have a separate, protected storage enclosure.
- You maintain tested backups outside the mini PC.
Keep separate systems when
- You need multiple hot-swappable drives, substantial capacity, or established NAS redundancy.
- Smart-home uptime must survive storage maintenance or a file-server failure.
- You do not want to troubleshoot virtualization, USB passthrough, or several operating systems.
- The mini PC has only one drive, limited cooling, or no practical expansion path.
Bottom line
A suitable mini PC can replace a Raspberry Pi or dedicated smart-home hub by running Home Assistant locally, and virtualization can consolidate additional services. It replaces a NAS only when the complete storage system—not merely the computer—provides adequate capacity, drive-failure protection, serviceability, and independent backups. Treat the unnamed machine’s model, ports, drive layout, power draw, and workload results as unknown until they are verified.
