Yes—some laptops can run four external screens, but it depends on the exact laptop, operating system, display modes, and connection method. A dock with four video sockets does not guarantee four independent desktops: the laptop must provide enough display capacity, and the dock may rely on features or software that vary by system.
Check these five things before connecting four screens
- Find the exact laptop model’s external-display limit. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the maximum number of external displays and whether the built-in panel can remain active at the same time. Look for the exact chip and model, not just the product family.
- Confirm what the laptop’s ports support. USB-C identifies a connector, not necessarily video capability. For USB-C video, the host, display and cable must support the relevant DisplayPort Alternate Mode. Thunderbolt devices require a Thunderbolt-capable host port. Microsoft outlines USB-C checks in its USB-C troubleshooting guidance.
- Identify how the dock creates displays. Outputs may use native video, DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST), DisplayLink USB graphics, or a combination. Each has different host, operating-system and driver requirements. DisplayLink outputs require the relevant software, and an employer may restrict installation on a managed computer.
- Check the combined resolution and refresh-rate limits. A setup may support fewer screens at higher resolutions or refresh rates. Verify the limits for the laptop, its graphics hardware, the dock and the intended arrangement—not just the maximum printed beside an individual output.
- Match each cable or adapter to the actual ports and modes. Check the monitor input, dock output and laptop connection before choosing HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C or Thunderbolt cables. A cable can carry a supported signal; it cannot add display streams the host or dock does not provide.
What four-screen support looks like on a MacBook Pro
Apple’s MacBook Pro display guidance lists support for up to four external displays on MacBook Pro with M4 Max and on MacBook Pro models introduced in 2023 or later with M2 Max or M3 Max. The allowed resolutions, refresh rates and port arrangements depend on the configuration. Check Apple’s model-specific display guidance before relying on the four-display maximum.

This is native support for certain MacBook Pro configurations; it does not mean every MacBook supports four external screens or that every four-output dock works the same way on macOS.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA four-output dock is not necessarily four independent screens
The Plugable UD-3900C4 illustrates why the dock’s display technology matters. Two of its HDMI outputs use DisplayLink; two depend on the host’s DisplayPort Alt Mode and MST support. Plugable specifies up to four displays at 1920×1080 and 60Hz each when the host and software requirements are met. See the product specifications and its maximum-resolution guidance.

Plugable says the UD-3900C4 cannot provide four unique extended displays on macOS because macOS does not support the MST behavior required by its fourth output. With all four displays connected, the two MST outputs may mirror each other, or one may not appear as an independent desktop. This limitation applies to this dock’s output arrangement; it does not override Apple’s support for four external screens on certain MacBook Pro models. Plugable describes the Mac compatibility limitation and the behavior of its four outputs.
Frequently asked compatibility questions
Will any USB-C dock run four monitors?
No. The laptop must support the video features the dock needs. A dock using Alt Mode and MST needs a compatible DisplayPort video path and MST support; some docks also require DisplayLink software for particular outputs.

Does the four-display count include the laptop’s built-in screen?
Specifications distinguish external displays from the built-in panel, and manufacturers may define configurations differently. Check for wording such as “four external displays” and confirm whether that setup is supported while the laptop’s own screen is active.

Which cable do I need?
There is no universal answer without the laptop, dock and monitor models. Check each device’s ports and supported video modes, then choose cables or adapters that match. The laptop port must carry video, and no cable can overcome a host’s display-count limit.

What resolution can four screens run at?
It depends on the laptop, dock, port bandwidth and number of active displays. For the UD-3900C4, Plugable specifies up to 1920×1080 at 60Hz on each of its four HDMI outputs when requirements are met. Apple’s native MacBook Pro limits vary by model and display configuration. Do not assume four 4K screens will work because a dock has four video sockets.
How do I confirm the screens are set up in Windows?
After connecting them, use Windows’ display settings to choose whether screens extend or duplicate the desktop and to arrange their positions. Microsoft’s multiple-monitor guidance covers these settings. Its page notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.
