Can One Inflight Wi-Fi Pass Cover Multiple Devices?

Inflight Wi-Fi rules differ by airline, aircraft and plan. Learn the difference between connecting multiple devices at once and transferring one active session.

Sometimes—but it depends on the airline, aircraft and Wi-Fi plan. Some services allow multiple devices to connect at once; others let you move one active connection from your phone to a tablet but require another purchase for simultaneous use. Check the onboard portal for your flight before assuming one pass covers everyone in your group.

Can I use inflight Wi-Fi on multiple devices?

There is no universal airline rule. The key distinction is between simultaneous access—two or more devices online at the same time—and switching—moving one active connection from one device to another. An airline may allow switching without allowing multiple devices to share one pass concurrently.

Policies can also depend on the Wi-Fi platform installed on a particular aircraft. Treat the airline examples below as service-specific, not a promise that every flight operated by that airline has the same setup.

How multiple-device access works on Delta, United and Southwest

Airline or service Simultaneous use Account, switching or access details Important qualification
Delta Sync Wi-Fi Delta says SkyMiles members can connect multiple personal devices. Connect after the boarding doors close and sign in with your SkyMiles number. Delta says Sync is available on most domestic and international flights; terms and aircraft availability apply. Delta Sync details.
United Wi-Fi One active plan does not provide two devices at once. A MileagePlus member can switch an active plan to another device. United says simultaneous access on two devices requires purchasing additional internet as a guest. Confirm the plan and options shown in the portal for your flight. United’s device-switch instructions.
Southwest Wi-Fi Southwest describes multiple-device access on Starlink-equipped flights. Rapid Rewards members get free Wi-Fi where available. Wi-Fi and features depend on the aircraft and service. Southwest’s broader portal says Wi-Fi is available only on Wi-Fi-enabled aircraft. Southwest onboard experience and Starlink details.
Delta legacy Gogo pass The legacy terms reviewed do not allow simultaneous use. A pass can be used on a laptop, tablet or smartphone, with sign-out and sign-in on another device while the pass remains active. This exception applies to Gogo-equipped domestic Delta flights covered by those terms; it should not be generalized to Delta Sync. Delta’s Gogo terms.

Can I use one Wi-Fi pass on my phone and laptop?

Possibly, but check whether the pass supports concurrent connections or only a device transfer. For example, United describes switching an active plan between devices, while two devices online together require an additional internet purchase. Delta’s current Sync information describes multiple-device access for SkyMiles members, subject to flight availability and terms.

Can I switch inflight Wi-Fi from my phone to my tablet?

On United, MileagePlus members can transfer an active plan to another device using the airline’s switch-device instructions. Delta’s legacy Gogo terms also describe signing out on one device and signing in on another while the pass is active, but that is a service-specific legacy exception. Follow the instructions in the portal you see onboard; the steps and eligibility are not universal.

Can two people share one inflight Wi-Fi purchase?

Do not assume so. The answer depends on the airline’s terms and the plan. United’s instructions distinguish switching one active connection from paying for two devices at once. Delta Sync permits multiple personal devices for SkyMiles members according to Delta, while Southwest describes simultaneous multi-device use on Starlink-equipped flights. Those policies do not establish a general rule for sharing a purchase between passengers on every flight.

Connect and check the flight’s actual Wi-Fi options

  1. Check the airline’s current Wi-Fi information for your flight. Aircraft equipment and onboard service can vary, so look for the portal’s terms and available options rather than relying on a fleet-wide assumption.
  2. Join the onboard network and open the portal. Southwest’s instructions are to enable airplane mode, turn Wi-Fi on, select the Southwest Wi-Fi network, then open the portal or visit SouthwestWiFi.com.
  3. Read the access terms before connecting another device. Look for whether the offer allows multiple simultaneous devices, transfers one active session, or requires an additional purchase.
  4. Sign in using the required account, if applicable. Delta Sync requires a SkyMiles login; Delta says to connect after the boarding doors close.

Why a hotspot is not a dependable workaround

The airline instructions cited here describe account-based switching or airline-specific multi-device access; they do not establish that phone tethering or a travel router is permitted or reliable. A portal may also impose service restrictions: Southwest says some high-bandwidth applications and video conferencing services may be restricted. Use the onboard portal’s stated options instead of counting on a workaround.
