OLED TVs can still develop permanent burn-in when bright, fixed images stay on screen for long periods or recur in the same places. That can happen through ordinary habits—such as watching news for hours every day, using a TV as a computer monitor, or repeatedly playing one game with a fixed HUD—so it is not limited to careless use. For most people who watch varied content, burn-in is unlikely to become an issue, according to RTINGS.
What OLED burn-in is—and what it is not
Burn-in is persistent image retention: a static element remains visible after the picture changes. It can show up as a faint channel logo, news ticker, game interface or other shape. Temporary image retention may fade; permanent burn-in lasts longer and can remain visible over other content.

The risk is cumulative. Long exposure to the same bright elements is more concerning than a brief pause or an occasional program with a logo. Static menus, app layouts, desktop interfaces, still images and bars around reduced-size content can also leave parts of the panel underused relative to the rest.
When is the risk meaningful?
Think about how long the TV stays on, how bright the fixed content is, and how often it appears in the same screen area. The pattern matters more than a single viewing session.

RTINGS says its testing found no noticeable burn-in in areas displaying varied content, and that burn-in is unlikely to affect most people with mixed viewing. This is a general assessment, not a guarantee for every model or usage pattern.
What recent tests tell us about modern OLEDs
In an August 2026 analysis, RTINGS compared selected 2020–2023 OLED TVs with a 2017 LG C7 after a 10,500-hour CNN checkpoint. Every newer OLED in the test showed visible permanent retention under those accelerated static-content conditions, while areas showing varied content did not show noticeable burn-in. The newer models did not show a consistent reduction in retention compared with the 2017 set.

The result is not a prediction of what will happen during ordinary mixed viewing. RTINGS ran each TV at its own maximum brightness in its recommended SDR picture mode, rather than matching brightness across models. RTINGS also argues that higher output can offset efficiency improvements when a newer panel is driven at maximum output. The comparison therefore does not establish that all current OLEDs are equally vulnerable or rank models by burn-in resistance.

Brightness is relevant: in RTINGS’ older real-life test, its maximum-brightness CNN set showed more severe retention than the set displaying CNN at 200 nits. Lowering brightness during bright static use should reduce panel wear, but the test does not quantify how much longer a TV might last as a result.

- OLED CARE: Helps protect your OLED display to retain the best picture quality possible over time
RTINGS’ Longevity 3.0 test began on October 2, 2026, with 12 TVs and 12 monitors listed at launch. Its first update provides the test setup and baseline measurements, not mature long-term results. The TV units display an unaltered live U.S. CNN stream; most run at maximum SDR brightness. The LG C5, Samsung S90F and LG G5 are luminance-matched, with the CNN white banner around 470 nits, to compare selected OLED approaches more directly. The displays are turned on and off four times daily to allow compensation cycles. RTINGS says most sets in its earlier 100-TV test accumulated more than 18,000 operating hours over about two years; that runtime describes the earlier test, not normal household use.
RTINGS’ earlier real-life test followed six 2017 LG C7 OLED TVs playing real, unaltered content. In its May 2019 update, the football and FIFA 18 sets had uniformity issues, and the live NBC set was beginning to show them. Sets displaying varied content generally had no noticeable issues on normal content. These results help illustrate the difference between static-heavy and varied use, but the test’s age and 2017 hardware limit what it can say about current models.
Does watching different shows prevent burn-in?
Changing content lowers the chance that one element repeatedly wears the same screen area, and RTINGS’ tests support the practical distinction between static-heavy use and varied viewing. It does not make burn-in impossible: a logo or other fixed element may persist across different programs, and cumulative exposure still matters.

There is no universal number of hours or years at which burn-in begins. The available tests do not establish an industry-wide incidence rate or a precise threshold that applies to every TV, brightness setting and viewing routine.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to reduce risk without treating the TV like a fragile device
- Vary the content when practical. If a ticker, logo, HUD or app layout stays in one place for hours, take breaks from it or switch to content that changes the image.
- Use a comfortable, lower brightness for static-heavy sessions. This can reduce wear, though the amount of any lifespan benefit has not been measured here.
- Let screen savers and panel-care features work. Do not leave a paused game or no-signal screen active. LG says its screen saver activates after approximately two minutes of inactivity in the supported conditions described in its guidance.
- Keep the TV powered as directed by its manufacturer. Scheduled maintenance may run when the TV is off but connected to power. Follow the instructions for the specific model rather than forcing a panel refresh.
Pixel shifting, screen savers and panel refresh or optimization are risk-management features, not burn-in insurance. Sony’s U.S. support article, last modified January 16, 2026, says: “Due to the characteristics of the materials used to achieve high-definition imaging, an OLED TV screen may experience image retention if an image is continuously displayed for long periods or when the same image is displayed repeatedly.” Sony describes automatic panel refresh, panel calibration, pixel shift and screen saver functions; Samsung describes automatic screen optimization on applicable models. A panel-care cycle should not be treated as a way to reverse permanent damage.
Should you choose OLED if you expect lots of static content?
If your main use is a fixed desktop, persistent dashboard or all-day news, weigh the amount of bright static content and daily runtime against your tolerance for risk. Check the intended model’s brightness controls and panel-care instructions, and consider an LCD TV if avoiding concern about persistent static interfaces matters more than OLED’s picture characteristics.
For varied viewing, the evidence suggests most people are unlikely to have a burn-in issue. The available recent comparison covers selected 2017 and 2020–2023 units; it does not settle burn-in resistance for 2024–2026 models. No TV should be called burn-in-proof on the basis of these results.
