Can Old Wi-Fi Devices Slow Down Your Network? Try Airtime Fairness

Airtime fairness can help faster Wi-Fi clients share radio time, but it may reduce performance for older devices. Find out how to test it and check other causes of slow Wi-Fi.

Sometimes—but there is no one setting that fixes every slow Wi-Fi problem. If your router offers airtime fairness, it can limit how much shared wireless time slower clients use, potentially helping faster devices. The tradeoff is that those older or slower devices may get less time themselves. Try it only if the setting is available on your router, then compare results before and after.

Can an old Wi-Fi device slow down the rest of the network?

It can affect other clients sharing the same wireless radio. Devices take turns using Wi-Fi; when a client transfers data slowly, it can occupy the radio longer to move the same amount of data. That can leave less opportunity for faster clients. An old device is not automatically the cause of a slowdown, though: weak signal, distance, walls, interference, channel congestion, and band or channel-width compatibility can also matter.

Airtime fairness is a router feature intended to manage how that shared wireless time is divided. It does not add internet capacity or make an old device faster. Depending on the router and network, it may improve efficiency or faster clients’ performance while reducing the slower client’s access to airtime.

What airtime fairness changes—and what it costs

Wi-Fi clients contend for opportunities to send and receive data. A slow transmission can take longer, so faster clients may wait. Airtime fairness attempts to distribute radio time in a way that prevents slower clients from occupying a disproportionate share.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

That balance can come at the slower device’s expense. TP-Link’s Archer AX20/AX1800 V1 guide describes its Airtime Fairness setting as improving overall performance “by sacrificing a little bit of network time on your slow devices.” This is the guide’s description of that product, not a guarantee of the same result on every router.

TP-Link Omada’s support document illustrates the possible tradeoff with a vendor example: with airtime fairness disabled, it reports 28.075 Mbps download for an 802.11g client and 18.521 Mbps for an 802.11n client; with the feature enabled, it reports 12.214 Mbps and 116.538 Mbps, respectively. The example’s reported total Wi-Fi throughput rose from 46 Mbps to 128 Mbps. These are TP-Link’s example-test results, with no publication year stated on the document—not independent measurements or a prediction for your home. TP-Link Omada: What is Airtime Fairness?

  • Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
  • Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.

Router implementations also differ. NETGEAR documents an implementation that distributes 80% of network bandwidth equally across up to 50 wireless devices, with remaining clients sharing the other 20%. That is a policy for the NETGEAR implementation described on its support page; it should not be treated as a universal airtime-allocation rule. NETGEAR: Airtime Fairness

How to find and test the setting

  1. Identify your router model and firmware. Check the label, router app, or administration page, then consult the instructions for that exact model. Not every router offers airtime fairness, and menu names and defaults vary.
  2. Record a baseline before changing anything. Test the device you suspect is slow and at least one faster device. Check more than one location, including where Wi-Fi usually causes trouble. Note both speed and whether devices stay connected. Microsoft recommends testing before and after network changes; keep the location and conditions as similar as possible. Microsoft: Fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows
  3. Enable airtime fairness if your router has it. For the TP-Link Archer AX20/AX1800 V1 guide, the path is Advanced > Wireless > Additional Settings. That path is specific to the cited model and guide; other routers may place the control elsewhere or omit it. TP-Link Archer AX20/AX1800 V1 User Guide
  4. Repeat the same tests. Compare the slower device’s speed and reliability, the faster device’s performance, and how the network feels during ordinary use. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether airtime fairness helped.
  5. Keep or undo the change based on your results. If faster devices do not improve, or older devices become unreliable, restore the original setting and investigate other causes.

Check other causes if airtime fairness does not help

Band choice and the radio environment often matter as much as device age. Microsoft describes 2.4 GHz as broadly compatible and longer-range, but generally slower and more congested; 5 GHz generally offers faster throughput and less congestion, but shorter range. 6 GHz requires compatible Wi-Fi 6E equipment and is unsupported by many older devices. A router may combine bands under one network name, so the options you can choose depend on the router and client.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
  • Signal and placement: Distance, walls, and other obstacles weaken the signal. Test closer to the router to see whether location is the problem.
  • Interference and congestion: Busy wireless channels can slow connections. Where your router supports channel selection, a less congested channel may help.
  • Channel width and older adapters: Microsoft notes that some older adapters or drivers may not work well with 40 MHz channel width on 2.4 GHz. Compatibility depends on the particular router, adapter, and driver.
  • Wi-Fi 6 compatibility: If an older IoT device has trouble connecting to a Wi-Fi 6 router, consult guidance for that router rather than turning off features blindly. ASUS lists options such as Wi-Fi 6 mode, Wi-Fi Agile Multiband, Target Wake Time, and Protected Management Frames as possible compatibility steps for certain supported models. Its page was last updated July 22, 2024; the listed steps are not a universal checklist. ASUS: Troubleshooting for IoT device compatibility issues with ASUS Wi-Fi 6 routers
