The announcement says users can submit text, images, video, and PDFs, with records of who submitted an item, when and from where it was submitted, and who signed it. It also says conflicting versions and takedown requests are retained in signed form. These are claims in the project announcement, not independently verified performance findings. The project-owned repository describes an MVP focused more specifically on capturing public URLs. Its described workflow uses WARC/WACZ archives, SHA-256 hashes, Ed25519 signatures, a Merkle transparency log, replication among nodes, conflict retention, API discovery, and offline verification. What an OIN record can—and cannot—establish
Integrity and attribution
A valid signature can support the claim that a particular signing key made a statement about an observation. A matching hash can support that the archived bytes have not changed since they were hashed. The repository cautions that these mechanisms do not prove the archived webpage was true, accurate, or complete. They establish properties of a record and its bytes, not the truth of the underlying content.

Capture time
The repository says an initial submission may rely on a locally declared capture time. If an item is submitted only once, a forged captured_at value may not be detected. A timestamp in a signed record should therefore not automatically be treated as independent proof of when the original page existed.
Deletion and takedown
OIN’s premise is preserving an auditable record, not preventing removal. The project author explicitly says it does not stop deletion. A record could help document what was captured and how a later takedown request was recorded, but the project materials do not establish that a platform must accept the record, that every deleted item can be recovered, or that preserving it has a particular legal effect.

Why independent verification matters
The repository says its Python and Node.js verifiers were produced in the same execution context, with the Python implementation used as a reference. That makes them less independent as checks of one another than separately developed implementations would be. The project identifies an independently implemented verifier for Ed25519 and Merkle structures as an open validation gap.

The repository also retracts a previous end-to-end replication/verification PASS claim: verification was not called during that test, so the PASS reflected data synchronization only. The Show HN announcement separately reports that two nodes were running on Alibaba Cloud HK and that full replication plus conflict testing had passed. Read that as an author-reported claim about the stated tests, not independent confirmation; synchronization alone is not proof that verification worked.

Is OIN ready for public or production use?
No. The repository describes its public test environment as unstable, subject to test-data resets, and unsuitable for production. It also warns against exposing a default development node publicly without its lockdown setting. Those cautions matter especially for a system handling public records: a test deployment should not be mistaken for durable evidence storage or a secure production service.
The repository’s call for contributions is specific: a developer unfamiliar with the codebase is asked to independently reimplement the Ed25519 and Merkle validation logic, with one run and no long-term commitment. That work would address a disclosed validation gap; it would not by itself establish the system’s broader security, legal value, or operational reliability.

How to read the “evidence stays” claim
The phrase is best understood as the project’s goal for retaining auditable records, rather than a guarantee that every post will be preserved or that an archived copy proves a claim. The examples in the announcement—a vanished video, removed post, or deleted whistleblower thread—are rhetorical examples, not documented case studies.
