In one 2019 proof-of-concept experiment, researchers used a tunable optical cavity to slow a fluoride-mediated reaction and shift which of two sites on a molecule reacted. The result suggests that vibrational strong coupling can influence a reaction’s selectivity in a particular setup; it does not show that ordinary mirrors can control chemistry generally.
What the researchers demonstrated
The experiment examined a fluoride-mediated deprotection reaction on an engineered silane derivative. The molecule had two different functional groups that fluoride could deprotect, creating competing reaction sites. Researchers flowed the solution through a microfluidic infrared spectroscopy cell positioned between highly reflective mirrors.

They tuned the cavity to couple with molecular vibrations associated with carbon–silicon or oxygen–silicon bonds. Under the reported coupled condition, the reaction slowed and the relative product ratio changed, shifting which site was favored. The report does not provide a numerical effect size, so the result is best described qualitatively rather than as a measured percentage or rate change.

How the cavity was meant to affect chemistry
Vibrational strong coupling (VSC) describes coupling between molecular vibrations and electromagnetic fluctuations in an optical cavity. In the researchers’ physical framing, when the wavelength of those fluctuations and the distance between reflective surfaces have a suitable relationship, the cavity can enhance the fluctuations. The study tested whether coupling at molecular bond-vibration wavelengths could alter a chemical reaction.

Here, “mirrors in the dark” refers to the reflective surfaces forming that cavity around the flowing solution. The mirrors were part of a specialized experimental arrangement; they were not used as standalone devices that directly or universally steer chemical reactions.
How the experimental apparatus was tuned
The researchers used a microfluidic infrared spectroscopy cell with windows made highly reflective. Four screws compressed a spacer, allowing the team to adjust the separation between the mirrors and tune the cavity’s harmonic resonances. This was a bespoke research setup, not a commercial apparatus identified in the report.

What changed, and what the comparison can establish
| Condition or measurement | Reported result |
|---|---|
| Uncoupled condition | Served as the comparison for the tuned cavity experiment; no numerical baseline is stated in the report. |
| Coupled vibrations | Vibrations associated with carbon–silicon or oxygen–silicon bonds were coupled; the report describes coupling three vibrations. |
| Reaction rate | The reaction slowed in the reported system; no numerical rate change is given. |
| Product ratio and site selectivity | The relative product ratio shifted, changing which of the two deprotection sites was favored; no numerical ratio is given. |
These observations show that the cavity condition coincided with a rate and selectivity change for this reaction. They do not establish how large the effect would be in other reactions, whether a particular site can always be selected on demand, or whether the same outcome follows from coupling a different molecular vibration.
Why the result was considered a proof of concept
At the time of Chemistry World’s February 8, 2019 report, the researchers said they could not predict how VSC would affect reaction rates and were still trying to identify the governing rules. The report described Strasbourg studies to that point as showing reaction slowing, while two then-available preprints reported acceleration. Those statements describe the landscape as it was presented in 2019; they are not a summary of all later findings.

The study therefore established a promising experimental result, not a validated general-purpose method for directing synthesis. The evidence in the report concerns one engineered substrate, one fluoride-mediated reaction, and a specialized tunable cavity.
