Yes—Meta says its Muse AI agent can navigate shopping sites and complete checkout steps, but it does not make a purchase without your approval. At launch on September 8, 2026, payments ran through Stripe Link: Muse could use a payment method saved in Link at participating businesses or a single-use virtual card elsewhere. That payment support does not guarantee a retailer will let Muse access its site.
What Muse can do when you ask it to shop
Meta describes Muse as a personal AI agent that can open a browser, fill in forms, negotiate and continue working after you close the app. That means it can act on a shopping task, rather than merely suggest products. Meta says it checks with the person before sensitive actions such as making a purchase. Meta’s September 8 launch announcement
How Muse pays at checkout
At launch, Stripe Link was the payment layer. The route depended on whether the merchant accepted Link or whether you had payment details stored directly on that retailer’s website.
| Checkout situation | How payment works | Approval |
|---|---|---|
| Merchant accepts Link | Muse can use the consumer’s preferred payment method saved in Link. | Stripe says the user approves the transaction total in chat. |
| Merchant does not accept Link | Link can issue a single-use virtual card for the approved purchase. Meta says it is limited to the merchant and amount, and valid for a limited time. | The user approves the purchase total before the transaction. |
| Payment details are already saved on the retailer’s website | Meta says Muse detects the checkout page and presents the exact purchase details for approval. | The user approves the details before the purchase. |
Stripe’s launch announcement says Link was accepted at more than 1 million businesses and had more than 300 million users globally. Those are Stripe’s figures for Link, not counts of Muse shoppers or purchases.

Why a supported payment method does not mean every store works
Payment support and retailer permission are separate. Axios reported on September 21, 2026 that Amazon had blocked Muse from browsing and purchasing on its platform. Amazon said it had not authorized Muse to access customer accounts, scrape data or process transactions, and raised security and user-experience concerns. The report describes Amazon’s position; it does not establish that other retailers have taken the same approach. Axios’s report
In other words, a payment path can be available while a particular retailer still refuses the agent access needed to use its store. Meta also said Shop Pay integration was coming soon at launch; the sources reviewed here do not establish whether it became available afterward. Meta’s announcement

What Meta says about credentials and safeguards
Meta says Muse runs in a dedicated cloud virtual machine, with credentials held in secure storage so the main agent cannot see the secrets. A separate component called Sentinel governs permissions and network requests, while approval prompts appear directly in the client when needed. Meta also says users choose connected apps and access levels and can disconnect a service. Meta AI Research’s technical account
These are Meta’s descriptions of its design, not a guarantee that every purchase will be error-free or that data is inaccessible to Meta. The same technical account acknowledges that Muse can make mistakes and says the virtual-machine architecture does not prevent Meta access when necessary to support, secure or operate the service.

What to check before letting Muse buy
- Confirm that the retailer allows Muse to access and use its site; having a payment option does not settle that question.
- Read the purchase details and total in the approval prompt before authorizing the transaction.
- Review which apps and services are connected and what access you have granted them.
- Remember that Meta’s safeguards are design measures, not a promise that an agent cannot make a mistake.
For any shopping agent, the useful questions are whether it can actually browse and act, which merchants and payment methods it supports, what details it displays before approval, whether the retailer permits access, and how it handles credentials and permissions. The available sources do not establish a full feature-by-feature comparison between Muse and other shopping agents.
